It's a faff, but at least you know exactly what's in it.

I was bought up on Cadburys and was so dismayed at the changes Mondelēz made to Dairy Milk, I wrote to their customer service about the change of taste and texture a few years. They told me I was wrong, the recipe was exactly the same, and the only changes they'd made was the shape of the bars as they made it easier to transport Hmm

These past few years I've mostly eaten Flakes as they still smell and taste the same, and the occasional (huge) bag of giant buttons. However, I gave up chocolate completely a few months ago to try to reset my eating habits. (And also because I suspected the palm oil was irritating my stomach. Since I've given up Cadbury's and other cheap chocolate I've not had any stomach problems.)

Prompted by this thread, I bought some Love Cocoa 37% milk chocolate in Planet Organic. It went straight in the fridge as I love chocolate super cold. (Since the takeover, Cadbury's has always been every so slightly soft/melty at room temperature, which just adds to its waxy yet weirdly crumbly texture.)

Anyway, gosh, Love Cocoa milk chocolate is very very good, isn't it. Lovely snap and so creamy if you let it melt on the tongue. I had some yesterday and another few squares today and today I'm convinced I can taste a little of the Dairy Milk creaminess.

James, if you're reading this, I do hope you do try to recreate the original Daily Milk, you will be the most popular man in the UK if you manage to!

I am a chocolate lover and have ordered LC choc samples on the back of this thread.

Another forty year Cadbury fan who's very sad at the flavour changes.

Fingers crossed for the LC sample!

Someone mentioned Divine Chocolate - I'm sure I saw it for sale in the Oxfam shop the other day. Perhaps a fairtrade thing.

gerbo · 23/08/2018 21:00

Yep Oxfam sell it. Also it's in our local health food shop, maybe worth a look?

PerverseConverse · 23/08/2018 21:02

Divine is available in the Co-op. I got a small bar today but I'm not fussed about it after tasting it. Montezumas buttons are still winning.

JuneFromBethesda · 23/08/2018 21:03

Why won't Mondelez/Cadbury's just admit they've changed the recipe? It's corporate gaslighting to insist that it's the same.

As an aside, I'm happy to see that I have fellow fridge-chocolate-lovers on this thread. Lots of people get sniffy about the idea of keeping chocolate in the fridge - I love it. (In fact I often put it in the freezer, shhhhh Grin )

PerverseConverse · 23/08/2018 21:04

Maltesers should be in the freezer. Chocolate had to be cold otherwise it's too icky.

00100001 · 23/08/2018 21:11

Ok.
Love Cocoa was tried again in the Binary House

My second taste - I let it warm up a it from the fridge. It's nice!

DH tried it, oblivious to anything chcolate related, said "it tastes like Dairy Milk did before it got shit!"

I definitely don't like the Asda Peruvian. It's got a weird taste. Texture is fine but it's like the G&B's in that it's slightly bitter.

I'm going to do a table to show the different quantities for each chocolate and put my scores for taste etc

PerverseConverse · 23/08/2018 21:14

@00100001 yay!

JuneFromBethesda · 23/08/2018 21:37

I love the thought you're putting into this Perverse Grin

Pippylou · 23/08/2018 21:45

A quick google of Cadbury Mondelez recipe change brings up a lot of paper articles, very interesting reads. Not popular!

ClaireFraser · 23/08/2018 21:46

You can buy Divine Chocolate from Oxfam charity shops and I've seen it in plenty of independent health food shops. Think the Co-op sell it too.

I've ordered 6bars from James and off to stick up on Divine tomorrow.

Can also vouch for the ALDI Peruvian dark chocolate as palm oil free and delicious.

The 'velvet touch' Green and Blacks bars are palm oil free and taste lovely, although I maybe boycotting them out of principle now I know who their parent company is 😞

StellaRockafella · 23/08/2018 22:00

JuneFromBethesda I put it in the freezer!

ignatiusjreilly · 23/08/2018 22:16

I've just eaten the Dairy Milk bar DH brought back from Dublin. It was in the old square shape and tasted EXACTLY like Dairy Milk of yore. Without the slightly weird aftertaste I was getting from the Buttons.

I'm very excited about this new discovery!

PerverseConverse · 23/08/2018 22:29

I've just had a corner of a LC bar and I do think it's as close to the proper Dairy Milk as we're going to get. However I will compare to the Irish Cadbury's that should arrive soon.

Does anyone remember the bars back in the early 80s that were flat with a raised edge? Kind of like a picture frame I guess. That's how I remember chocolate. I used to love the DM little star bars as they were the closest to it but now they've become shaped, smaller, and icky too. I bought one today for my 3 year old and was amazed at how much smaller they were than a coupe of years ago.

All the talk of brexit makes me wonder how chocolate will be affected. If some of the DM bars are being produced in Poland how will a no deal brexit affect that? Maybe chocolate for uk consumption will be uk produced, so back to Bourneville. I've no idea how trade works as it is never mind with brexit thrown in but I imagine there will be an effect on things like chocolate.

PerverseConverse · 23/08/2018 22:44

Kind of like this. This is an Australian bar but the shape and edge were similar.

What the fuck have they done to chocolate?
BlackShirt · 23/08/2018 22:53

Animal pattern wrapping?

PerverseConverse · 23/08/2018 22:59

No I don't think so. Just regular dairy milk wrapping. I'm going back to about 1982/3.

PerverseConverse · 24/08/2018 09:32

Oooh my samples from Love Cocoa have just arrived Smile

3luckystars · 24/08/2018 10:19

I AM IN IRELAND AND THE CADBURY CHOCOLATE IS HORRIBLE HERE TOO

They have ruined it. English and Irish chocolate was always different but now it’s the same. Disgusting.

RoseWhiteTips · 24/08/2018 11:27

You have to buy European if you buy then. IMO

Lindt is reliable.

PerverseConverse · 24/08/2018 12:08

My mum is taste testing now Grin

00100001 · 24/08/2018 13:02

what's the verdict perverse ?
