Cadbury’s and Galaxy are utterly rank now. Cadbury Dairy Milk used to be my absolute favourite comfort food but I find it inedible now. Twirls and Chocolate Buttons still taste right but I can’t eat the rest - I have to spit it out. It takes if sweet wax and has a weird texture. If you want old school Cadbury’s order some from ireland on ebay and do a taste test - still tastes the same as the old recipe to me (or it did a year or so ago when I tried it so should now if they haven’t changed the recipe over there too).

Like a PP I don’t want super posh amazing quality chocolate either - I just want a nice comforting bar of chocolate that tastes like chocolate did when I was younger. The only stuff I like now is Lindt, which I really have to be in the mood for as its very sweet and creamy (but tastes how it always did) and the Choceur milk chocolate Aldi stuff that comes as 5 small bars in a pack. It’s really nice. I’d kill to have proper Dairy Mill back though.

Hello chocolate lovers!

Yes Cadbury Ireland chocolate is still good- twirl flake and the Irish small bars.

I used to work for Cadbury and was on the CDM (Cadbury dairy milk) tasting panel.

It's all about cutting costs now and the company not caring that we don't like the new taste. I agree it's sad.

I am so against palm oil it's unreal. Learnt about it at a trip to the zoo, head and shoulders doesn't contain it any more.

I've run out of my stash of Irish Cadburys, need another delivery!

Keen to do a live tasting session.
Yes start with the least coca first. Have a glass of water to sip in-between nibbles. Really let it melt and breathe with it in your mouth. It's mostly the smell receptors in your nose that do the 'tasting'.

I challenge you to make a cup of tea and a cup of coffee. Hold your nose and I bet you won't be able to tell the difference!

Aprilsinparis · 20/08/2018 21:46

Just ordered some Love Cocoa. Thanks Jaimebravo

Pippylou · 20/08/2018 21:47

Why is the Irish Cadbury's different? Is it a separate company?

Chocolateismyvice · 20/08/2018 21:50

On the back of this thread, I've just spent £25 on Love Cocoa to treat myself. Can't wait to try it!

Gardai · 20/08/2018 21:50

I looked at my green & blacks (hazelnut) and it definitely says palm oil on ingredients - no wonder it tasted shite.
I shall test irish Cadbury next time in Dublin.
Awaiting love cocoa delivery tomorrow, I’m excited and dribbling a bit at the prospect.

holidaylady · 20/08/2018 21:58

Pippylou that's a very good question. When I worked there the Irish business was an entirely separate business unit. The cocoa was the same as the UK cocoa, but the key diff is the fresh milk used to make the chocolate.

That used to be the Cadbury'thing' but as the marketing team were crap I don't think the public actually knew that.

Everyone in bournville near the factory certainly did- occasionally a milk tanker driver would underestimate the amount of braking necessary for a sharp right turn onto Bournville lane. Cripes that was scary to see.

(Another reason for dairy milk to have changed flavour, it's made in Poland so it's polish cows milk going into it, which won't be the same as Brummie cows milk)

However I think now that the Irish business unit must have some amazingly strong managers who are just refusing point blank to change the recipe. I can't see any other reason why the taste has stayed the same.

holidaylady · 20/08/2018 21:59

Sorry for lack of easy to read text.

I did have lots of lines added but the app took them out soz

PerverseConverse · 20/08/2018 22:03

I've just ordered some Irish stuff off eBay Grinfree postage so would be rude not tooSmile

3luckystars · 20/08/2018 22:12

I have emailed Cadbury complaining. They don’t reply.

I have also ordered the Love Cocoa a few months back, I was so excited, thinking it was going to taste like a Dairy Milk but it didn’t.

It’s definitely nicer but it’s not chocolate as we knew it.

That’s gone.

GONE

PerverseConverse · 20/08/2018 22:15

I'm not even sure what the old stuff tasted like to be honest. It's been 8 years after all since the take over. When was the palm oil switcheroo debacle?

Pippylou · 20/08/2018 22:16

Ta, this fascinates me. Dh had his last trip to Dublin with work last week, wish I'd known. 😉

madeyemoodysmum · 20/08/2018 22:24

German choc is the way forward Aldi Lidl

Jozxyqk · 20/08/2018 22:26

I don't expect LC to taste like DM used to. For one thing, the milk chocolate bar is 37% - AFAIK, the Bournville bar used to be approximately 37-40% when I was a child (it was my favourite). So the DM bar was probably quite a bit lower, like 20-25% or so?

missmouse101 · 20/08/2018 22:26

I found Love Cocoa totally over rated, expensive and nothing special.

PasstheStarmix · 20/08/2018 22:27

Try one of the Cadbury’s bars of chocolate as they’re making it again with fresh milk and it’s so much nicer.

PerverseConverse · 20/08/2018 22:32

I've just had some Cadbury's giant buttons. I used to eat the big bag packets every day. This packet had been in the fridge for a few hours then sat on my bedside table for about an hour and a half. It's not a warm night, only 18 degrees so should stay cool I would have thought. I put one in my mouth and just breathed as per the instructions. It's felt a bit grim but I have sensory issues. I like my chocolate cold from the fridge. I tried to snap one but got a dull thud as had gone soft. Taste wise they were ok but I feel like they have glued themselves to my throat despite drinking water. There's a yucky taste in my mouth too now but I have reflux so might be that. Unimpressed would be my overall experience.
I'm thinking the taste testing should be done with room temperature chocolate? Maybe I prefer mine cold as is less cloying that way.

SoulToSqueeze · 20/08/2018 22:40

Chocolate was always my go to treat when I fancied something sugary and sweet. I just can't stand it anymore. I only really like Lindt now but can't justify spending so much on chocolate so I rarely have it. I did buy a small bar of Galaxy the other day and whatever it was I bit into wasn't chocolate at all! It didn't melt, just kind of crumbled into plasticy chunks. I spat it out and threw the rest away. Disgusting.

Needsleepneedsleep · 20/08/2018 22:42

Cadburys Freddos are definitely the way forward. Went and stocked up yesterday much to the bemusement of DH and checkout operator Grin

PigletJohn · 20/08/2018 22:54

Nothing is as horrible as Hershey's. Did you know they actually add baby-vomit scent to it?

Apparently Americans have grown up with it and like that sort of thing.

You may think I'm joking but I'm not

Cadbury's codes explained

What the fuck have they done to chocolate?
codswallopandbalderdash · 20/08/2018 23:03

Aldi and Lidl chocolate is really sweet too.

Wincarnis · 21/08/2018 04:16

Vivani (German) organic chocolate is nice, you can get it in some health food places in UK. The bitter orange is divine (and great for baking!)

Tony’s Chocolonely (Dutch) is OK too.

BlueJava · 21/08/2018 04:17

I've stopped buying Galaxy and Cadbury's - yuk!! I now buy the pale blue Green & Blacks or Hotel Chocolat. More expensive but if you're going to treat yourself you've got to enjoy it otherwise it's pointless!

PasstheStarmix · 21/08/2018 06:21

Galaxy is too salty and I’m sick of the salted caramel fad as well.
