Inspired by a thread about hygiene - carpets in kitchens and toilets, I thought it could be interesting to recall some of the diabolical tat from the past.

I desperately want a nice drinks trolley like my nan had. My house isn't big enough for the sort of drinks cabinet my parents had/have

I still have the tile topped table my grandad made for my gran. It's actually really nice but some of the tiles are cracked so I need to replace them. problem is they're a really weird size of tile...

we had some super weird ashtrays in our family. my mum's uncle was a catholic priest in the east end and used to get given dubious 'gifts' from the mafia members of his congregation that he didn't dare turn down. also he used to adjust bits and pieces of very old church furniture into other things, so for example a lovely old candle stand got 'converted' into an ashtray....

Vitalogy · 16/08/2018 16:37

I've just had a look on Ebay for the those Wade Wimsies, they're cheap enough. We had some, they got chipped badly from playing with them though.

I desperately need to get trollied on nice drinks.

Eek - my house has got two of those glass doors! They must be from the 80s. I rather like them, except that one of them is the bathroom door... I've covered it up with a tasteful veil.

TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 17:10

Not 80s, 50s or 60s I think

Are poo sticks considered grim and/or tacky? Please say yes!

TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 17:11

We had them in the 80's and they were VERY old fashioned then.

I'm mocking them in jest - the retro look is popular but when you're 16 anything not ultra modern is old fashioned and sooo awful (sounding like Kevin the teenager).

What about one of these beauties in the lounge with a plastic plant trailing in it!!!!

TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 17:22

These were ubiquitous once upon a time - coffee (and sometimes tea) cups in a smokey brown glass. The brand was Acoroc - quite famous and still going I think.

My Mum used to favour a particular hedgehog cake like this one - no idea why the recipe had to contain alcohol for childrens parties?? Surely it could have been adapted.

I remember so many of the items mentioned - didn’t realise how many I had forgotten. My contribution- the fake Showaddywaddy tape that was very popular in 1979 as we couldn’t afford the real one and the proper recipe for pineapple hedgehog- using an orange! We actually used to make them for parties.

Artex. Has anyone mentioned Artex? Our house is smothered in the stuff. I think it's the reason we could afford it, frankly...

Claw001 · 16/08/2018 18:13

I used to love the smokey coffee cups, coffee tastes better in them for some reason! Or maybe the 80’s killed my taste buds! They still sell them in supermarkets. I might have to buy some!

spud Artex is what is holding your house together! Used to cover terribly cracked walls and ceilings I think?

TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 18:20

Be careful if you do work with Artex - it's usually got asbestos in it. It's fine as it is, but it you're pulling it down etc, take precautions.

Torn Is that a Ford Capri? Oh,I adored those cars.

elephantoverthehill · 16/08/2018 18:25

Artex on walls can also cause nasty scrapes especially if it is a stippled pattern.

Spudlet · 16/08/2018 18:30

We're planning to skim over it. I don't know if it's from the asbestos era (apparently it's stuff from certain dates that tend to be riddled with it) but am not willing to find out!

TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 18:30

It is indeed a Capri - not mine I hasten to add.

@TornFromTheInside That drinks trolley is amazing ShockSmile

TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 18:33

Once upon a time, you genuinely could not go past 10 people without seeing one of these...

If you had a jumper (sweater) you had one of these monstrosities with their logo front and centre. Quite possibly the greatest marketing success of the 80's. Any style, any colour, they managed to get their logo across it.

Seriously tacky and grim...
OP posts:
TornFromTheInside · 16/08/2018 18:35

They were eventually replaced by an Asian company producing them without the 'er' in the logo.

I have Artex ceilings! Would love to get them plastered over. Also my house has its original 1986 kitchen. I need help! (And money...)

Seriously tacky and grim...
Claw001 · 16/08/2018 18:42

Grin at ‘er’ removed!

That jumper has reminded me of Benetton jumpers and Gabbici, worn with LA Gear!
