Bill Nighy doesn't do much for me I have to say but I get the attraction - he's talented and funny and charismatic. People who aren't that good looking as such can still be very attractive because of other qualities. I really wouldn't put Stephen Fry in this category though - personally I find him desperately smug and tedious and unfunny.

sassytheFIRST · 17/01/2015 22:44

They got married today, didn't they? Let's hope loves young dream comes through for them both.

BabyX · 18/01/2015 01:35

Stephen Fry has a fetish preference for the very young. It does make me wonder whether this is a true meeting of minds or whether the older man is fetishising the youth and beauty of the younger, and the younger is in love with the cachet and status of a famous older partner. They barely know each other either - I think it's absurd for anyone to get married after less than 2 months together. I do think this could be the sign of a manic episode.

I agree with every word.

mathanxiety · 18/01/2015 01:51

I agree with JapaneseMargaret and VenusRising. SF looks giddy in photos I have seen, not happy.

CheerfulYank · 18/01/2015 01:51

The pictures are a bit eurghhh.

When I was 27 my dad was only 49 though.

JoanHickson · 18/01/2015 01:58

Well now they are married I hope they are happy.

munchkinmaster · 18/01/2015 07:55

Who knows. I just think bipolar is a relapsing remitting condition. Hope this relationship has enough substance to make it through any bad times

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 18/01/2015 08:55

I think a lot of us are heavily influenced by the physical mismatch in the photos - which is probably irrational. If you look at the middle two photos in this NYT article then although the age gaps are huge - either crudely or relative to age - there's not the same WTF factor because the younger parties look like real adults and the older parties look physically desirable. (No I have no idea why Goldblum's wife is in her underwear either).

And of course anyone with a friend with bipolar knows that the words "impulsive, whirlwind, surprise" always make you a bit twitchy - so there's a little amber flag waving there.

BabyX · 18/01/2015 11:56

Yes, the physical mismatch, you are right about that. Elliott could pass for much younger than 27 and he is short and slight. Stephen is a big, tall man and overweight, he has quite a physical presence.

Those saying we wouldn't bat an eyelid if it was an older man with a younger woman, you are wrong. The very fact that you can trot out Calista and Harrison, Catherine ZJ and Michael Douglas etc etc means those relationships did cause a rumble that we all remember.

The thing is those couples are still together and so have disproved the naysayers and therefore after 10 years plus, it doesn't matter. Perhaps Stephen and Elliott will too (not a chance).

seaoflove · 18/01/2015 12:01

CZJ and Michael Douglas aren't together anymore.

Stephen even looks like a proud father in their wedding photo. I feel angry at myself for feeling so squicked over it, but I do. Of course, I don't wish ill on either of them, but only time will tell whether it's genuine or Stephen is being very misguided indeed.

ExitStageLeft · 18/01/2015 20:22

What a thoroughly horrid thread. Who cares? Live and let live. It's legal. Why can't Elliot find him attractive? Why can't it be him who has a fetish for older men?

Redglitter · 18/01/2015 20:27

CZJ and Micheal Douglas are still together they got back together after their separation

Greythorne · 18/01/2015 21:32

I don't care that it's two men and I don't care about the age gap. Age has no meaning.

But in all the photos I have seen, the young man looks awkward, unhappy, a bit rabbit in the headlights. SF looks delighted and proud, like a happy father looking fondly down at his son going off to a good RG UnI.

I would love a body language expert to have a go at the pics :)

LaurieFairyCake · 18/01/2015 21:35

Stephen fry is fabulous.

The age gap is too big, it really is.

Greythorne · 18/01/2015 21:42

He is actually leaning away from SF in this shot.

Stephen Fry and his young fiance. What. Are. You. doing Stephen?
Redglitter · 18/01/2015 21:45

Greythorne that's exactly what we said too. Anyone looking at those photos would, I bet, think father and son. It seems to be very one sided on SF side. I haven't seen one photo of them with good body language and equally happy.

sadly I can't see this ending happily

Viviennemary · 18/01/2015 22:00

It will be all over in under two years. The age gap is far too large. They're just totally unsuited for many reasons. It will all end in tears.

ethelb · 18/01/2015 22:54

To be honest the age gap is unusual but not unheard of or insurmountable. I would be worried if I was friends with either party of a couple who were getting married after two months and one half was bipolar. It would make me wonder who was exploiting who tbh.
Surely if you really loved someone who was bipolar you would wait and see if any whirlwind romance was genuine or symptomatic of a manic episode? If you had any morals anyway Hmm

SteptoeAndDaughter · 18/01/2015 22:58

I saw that too, Greythorne. I'm hoping it's just an awkward photo and he's not used to all the press attention. Really hoping. I wish them luck.

nooka · 05/02/2015 06:58

I looked at pictures on Google of the two of them and whilst I totally agree that they look more like father and son there seem to be a number of pictures where they both look very happy. Of course Stephen Fry looks his age whilst his husband looks younger than 27, but I don't particularly see a handsomeness mismatch. Elliott Spencer doesn't look particularly good to me and Stephen Fry is attractive enough (and has a great voice).

The Guardian said that they'd been together since last summer, so that's about six months, not very long but not particularly remarkable either. I suspect that it will likely not be plain sailing for the relationship given Stephen Fry's mental health issues and celeb relationships generally seeming to fail to last but in general good luck to them.

Nokidsnoproblem · 13/02/2015 21:08

I hope they're happy together.

Six months is not a long time to get to know someone, especially someone with serious mental health issues. I really hope Elliot has done some research into bipolar so that he can help his husband when needed.
