dd sent home from school with no knickers

I am not one to complain for no reason, but today my dd was sent home with no knickers on.
She had gone swimming at 12 with the school , when she had gone to get dressed after swimming, she had found her knickers were missing from the locker-she thinks she dropped them.
She told the teacher, the teacher laughed at her and left her to continue the rest of the day wearing no knickers!
Imo the school should have phoned me to bring some in for her to wear but they didn't think to tell me, so she has gone half a day with none on.
Wwyd? I don't want to feel silly complaining but its a cold outside today and i don't like the thought my daughter walked around half the day feeling silly

. How old is she? Surely the school keep spares for occasions like this?

I would definitely mention it to the school. I would write a strongly worded letter, but that's just me.

If she had tights I'd probably let it go but casually mention that if it happens again you'd prefer to be notified; if not I'd think they were out of order and I'd complain.

How old is your daughter? If she is in juniors then the school are not likely to have spare knickers. If she is infants then the school should have found her some spares.

My son did something similar and he wore his PE shorts instead of pants under his trousers. Admitally it is less embrassing to have no pants if you are wearing trousers.

still, wearing trousers with no knickers is very umfortable, no? I would not like this either really op.

How old is she? I reckon the school should have rung you. It's a bit of a privacy thing too - was she out in the playground with no knickers under her skirt? Are there boys around? Not so nice being "laughed at" by the teacher either...

DD1 (Year 3) forgot to pack her knickers one day (they go swimming early in the day so wear their swimming costumes underneath their uniforms) but luckily she just put on her PE shorts. But if she hadn't had them I hope the school would ring me.

Although on the other hand DD2 came home from school one day from Reception wearing mystery knickers! We washed them and returned them to school, but it was a bit weird. Can't remember now what had happened to her own ones, she might have had an accident and they tidied her up, but shared knickers made me a bit.

If she was wearing trousers i don't see a problem - they wouldn't necessarily have spares at the pool and if she eent swimming at 12 it wasn't that long.

Trousers same as tights, so no I wouldn't go mental over it. I was assuming tights of the thick wool variety by the way! Ie. that would retain your modesty.

Oh - so she was wearing trousers - not such a huge issue then - but definitely uncomfortable.

I would not be happy about this. And to laugh at her ... no, not on at all. Sorry, but I would be at the Headmaster's office in the morning to have a word. I wouldn't rant or get angry but calmly point out that not only had my DD been left with no knickers for half a day but she had also been belittled by a teacher.

I don't think the teacher should have laughed at her, but to be honest I wouldn't really be bothered by the knicker issue for one day if she was wearing trousers.

Not a huge issue if she had trousers on. They probably wouldn't have spare knickers for children that age. I think the teacher was right to make nothing of it.

half a day without knickers is, IMO, a non-issue. especially as she had trousers on.

was your daughter upset by it?

With trousers I would have been OK I think. And being at work I'd not have been too impressed to be summoned to provide spare undercrackers because DD had managed to lose hers. I guess it was a judgement call by the teacher as I don't suppose they have a lost knickers at the swimming pool' policy

I wouldn't expect the school to have spare knickers for a nine year old, and I think that because she was wearing trousers it's a non-issue. Different if she had a short skirt and socks on. What wound I do? Nothing, other than tell my DD to take better care of her belongings next time she went swimming.

I agree with AgentProvocateur. As an ex teacher, I can see there wouldn't have been much the teacher could do about it. I doubt very much she laughed to belittle your dd. I expect she was trying to make light of the situation because there was nothing else to be done.

You could try telling the school that you are available and willing to nip up to the school with spares if the situation were to arise again (the school may not have thought of contacting you because for a lot of parents at work this would have been simply not practicable) but beyond that, I don't think anything needs to be said.

Things like this are part of the reason why teaching is so unnecessarily stressful. Supervising 30 children getting dressed after swimming is a nightmare and the least you can expect from 9 year olds is that they'll look after their underwear. I can envision how this would actually happen in the changing room - the children would be messing around, enjoying a bit of relaxed time with the teacher who would be standing there chatting to them, your DD would say "Oh miss I have no knickers" in the middle of the chat, the teacher would laugh (as is normal for someone who is chatting in a friendly way when they are told something silly) and would assume there was no issue as long as the child wasn't upset or asking for a replacement. For some reason you have blown this normal, everyday thing up into something to complain about. If you brought your DD swimming yourself and her knickers went missing would you immediately rush home to get her new ones even if you'd planned to have lunch out? I doubt it. Have some common sense here.

It's definitely not an issue that the school would even consider calling a parent for - it's just one of those things that's a bit annoying for your DD but nothing that warrants disturbing a parent who might be busy. If a child was crying about it, or genuinely worried, then fair enough, something would need to be done. But I can guarantee that every single week a child will lose some piece of clothing or do something silly and if a parent was contacted every single time some small thing didn't go quite according to plan it would be mayhem.

I honestly don't know what some parents expect of schools sometimes. It's madness.

Thats why i posted Callin-wanted to know whether i was being silly for complaining before i complained.
I know now it would be silly to complain.
I do see what your saying, i wasn't worried about the teacher laughing really just the fact she went round half a day in no knickers

yy to the teacher having laughed to make light of it. It really is no big deal at all, despite being uncomfortable.

At least she didn't remove her tankini bottoms at the poolside, unlike some I could mention...

The reason why i posted is because i have never had any of my dds cone home with no knickers after school/nursery and thought it was odd they didn't think to give her spares or me a phonecall.
The thing is i haven't complained, as i wanted mnetters advice 1st and im not angry at the teacher laughing
