More of a WWYD really, should I have told this woman I could see her knickers?

Just back from the school run, and had a rather unfortunate experience in the car park....I was walking behind a woman who obviously felt she was wearing trousers, but in fact was wearing tights. Which weren't tight. And were see through - very see through. I could see her red and white stripey knickers very clearly through them. Shock

I was torn as to whether I should have said anything to her - there was a moment where she was on her own, with no other adults in earshot, and I could've gone over and had a quiet word in her ear. But I chickened out.Blush

I mean, it it were me I would want to know. But I can't see how she didn't know - I always check my rear view in the mirror before I leave, but even if she doesn't then she must have seen how thin they were when she put them on, surely? I can't believe it was deliberate either, not with those pants. Or that arse.

So, WIBU to tell her if I get the opportunity again? Or should I just leave her to it?

Nah definitely not say anything.

If its the kind of person who would be embarrassed to be wearing leggings that were so thin people could see their pants, they will probably realise for themselves at some point and be massively relieved that no-one pointed it out.

If its the kind of person who doesn't give two shits, then they will probably give you short shrift.

I saw someone doing it without underware and although she looked like she had a good figure waring that empathised her dimply bum and made it look awful wobbly and fat I think it is one of thoose fashions that looks bad on everyone.

SecretMinceRinser · 18/01/2012 19:39

I had a similar, yet more disturbing, experience one rime when FIL decided to wear baggy shorts plus loose boxers which meant that every time he sat down I could see his cock and one ball up the leg. I didn't tell him.

crypes · 18/01/2012 20:17

That made me laugh, what a lovely lasting image of fil!

R2PeePoo · 18/01/2012 20:29

There was an bearded ex-academic at the university I attended who only wore baggy running shorts, with nothing underneath. All year round

Whenever he was walking downstairs, those people who were walking up would avert their eyes quickly.

No-one told him but he was terrifying in many other ways as well

staylucky · 18/01/2012 20:31

Ooooh dunno if I coulda told her. A gal I know went through a phase of wearing these godawful jeans, not sure if they were too big or too small really but every time I saw her rushing through town pushing her buggy her jeans would be round her arse. Not talking flash of knickers but actually most of her bum. Not a small gal either. Blush I really should've said something but she seems to have binned them since so someone else obv did. Grin

PessimisticMissPiggy · 18/01/2012 20:37

I was in a pub a few weeks back when a lady sat a few tables away from me came back from the ladies with a sanitary towel stuck to her arse. I was mortified for her.

I'd seen her chatting with the barmaid earlier in the evening so I told her, and she approached the lady with some paper towels and discreetly removed it for her.

bottleofbeer · 18/01/2012 20:43

I was in the chemist last Summer. I had on a floaty type of halter neck top and a pair of cropped jeans. One of the floaty bits of the top had got stuck in the wasitband of the jeans. Not remotely embarrassing as it wasn't revealing anything, it'd just got a bit caught up. Some woman taps me on the shoulder to "tell me about my top being tucked into my jeans", I said "uhmm yeah, thanks" and fixed it. But then she went on and on and onnnnnnn about how great it was that she was there to tell me and save me from terrible humiliation. She actually made me feel embarrassed about it because there were about four other people in the shop and she was just drawing attention to something that wasn't actually particularly embarrassing to begin with. Not sure she was all the tbh.

TheLittleFriend · 18/01/2012 20:45

She must have known and just not cared, I reckon.

I once told a woman at a playgroup that her blouse was on inside out. Much less embarrassing (for both of us) than the leggings scenario, and I told her very subtly, so no one else would notice. She now blanks me completely. Wish I hadn't bothered.

Backtobedlam · 18/01/2012 20:46

I hope it wasn't me...I have a pair of white and red striped knicks! I wear leggings/tights but usually with a dress so shouldn't have bum on display, but who knows, in the rush of the school run it could easily get tucked up in my coat.

I don't think you should have said anything though, unless it was a close friend, its just a fashion mistake not a disaster. I once had my dress tucked in my knickers at a formal works dinner, and when told had to leave the room and was too upset to return until suitably drunk to laugh it off!

notveryinventive · 18/01/2012 20:47

Just came on this thread to check it wasnt me and phew it wasn't, but FWIW I probably wouldnt have told her, but thats because I am a chicken.

FutureNannyOgg · 18/01/2012 20:53

Thin leggings should come with a public health warning "not to be worn as trousers"
I think a lot of the time they don't realise, as the fabric is usually stretched at its thinnest on the arse, and unless you check your arse in good light, you might not realise how thin they are.

Boomerwang · 19/01/2012 05:35

ewwww secretmincerinser that reminded me of the time my dad did the same thing... thanks a lot!

gamerwidow · 19/01/2012 05:49

I've seen loads of young girls doing this recently now that leggings and a short top is unfortunately "in".
I think to have said anything would be rude because although it looks silly it's not a mistake in the same way tucking you knickers in your skirt etc. is.

fizzwhirl · 19/01/2012 08:16

Flyingoutofcontrol - I'd have a quiet word with your friend. If they're only see-through when she bends over, she's probably not aware of it. If you think she'd be very sensitive, just comment (when she's wearing something totally different) that you saw that happen to someone when you were out: if she's worried, she'll check next time she wears them!

TheLittleFriend - please don't stop telling people! I've done this a couple of times: once when I was clothes-shopping, and my top was on and off as I tried things on (a stranger told me that time), and once just out with friends! I'm not easily embarrassed, to be honest Grin, but I was definitely grateful to be told!

I think for me the rule would be: tell them if it's pretty clear they don't know about it, not if it's a fashion mistake.

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 19/01/2012 08:30

My mum once went for a job interview and was very grateful to the receptionist who pointed out she had caught her skirt in her pants before she went in.

But here I think it is a deliberate choice to wear thin leggings even if they don't quite realise how much pant is on display so I don't think I would not say anything. Might be different if was a good friend and it only became a problem when bending over.

nenevomito · 19/01/2012 08:36

This has made my laugh as I had exactly the same thing at work the other day with someone wearing what looked like cheap leggings and all you could see through them were her bright stripy pants.

Perhaps its a new trend that I've not noticed. Time to post in S&B perhaps Grin

CroissantNeuf · 19/01/2012 08:41

I think the see-through leggings is the winter equivalent of the see-through white linen trousers.

Those people also seem to wear the red and white striped pants or 'look at me everyone' lacy ones.

CuppaTeaJanice · 19/01/2012 08:42

You get the same effect with pale coloured linen trousers, but people continue to wear them and apparently not notice. I've seen all manner of hideous pants/cellulite/unkempt ladygarden horrors thinly veiled by a whisp of linen!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 19/01/2012 08:42

When I was a youngster if your bra was visable people would have been having this very conversation (though it would be via carrier pigeon or somthing).

But thanks to Madge visable bras became fashionable and the public took that to mean that it was fine to have any bra on show. Greying, saggy, wearing one with a backless dress (WTF) etc.

I think this new trend is just a continuation of this. People dont give a toss if their knickers are on show. After all that low rider jeans/visable thong stuff its all just gone to the dogs.

Dont tell me someone puts a pair of leggings on and doesnt notice they can see their stripy knickers.

I have to get ready in the dark and that is the sort of thing I would check before I left the house.

It would be fab to go up to someone in Tescos and say 'Excuse me my dear. I do not wish to alarm you but you seem to have forgotten to change out of your night things'

Grin
DoesNotGiveAFig · 19/01/2012 08:48

A young lady visited our work place once, (a customer) and was wearing a white skirt. Through which you could see her zebra print pants. I didn't tell her, and all the men leered at her. (Yes, they are quite hideous like that whenever a new lady is present).

Bizarre.

weevilswobble · 19/01/2012 08:56

Dont say anything. Doubt she cares. Next week you'll be saying 'did you realise your hair isnt brushed at the back? Just thought 'd say like'
Week after you'll be 'err, do you realise your cleavage is on show? Just thought i'd mention it coz you'll catch a chill'

GoEasyPudding · 19/01/2012 09:02

A lady jogged past me the other day wearing leggings, but in the sunshine they looked like 15 denier tights. It wasnt a good look.
I felt really bad for her but she was well up the road before I even noticed her nearly bare backside and I couldnt tell her.

KatMumsnet · 19/01/2012 10:45

Hi we've moved this into the WWYD topic.
