Would you go in the revealed passageway?

Thisisanicecage yes it is. I have viewed quite a few houses with unexcavated spaces. I'm really good at spotting anomalies in floor plans.

The house we wanted to buy had a 20ft room hidden behind a wardrobe - proper roof height, gawd knows why the builders had left it like that. I guess they were just deeply imaginative (i.e. it can only be accessed by the master bedroom, why would anyone want a 20ft square room which can only be accessed right next to the ensuite? Hmm ) But we didn't buy it in the end, we bought something even nicer.

whomovedmychocolate · 27/08/2011 21:58

Hassled you asked how we can leave a house with a priest hole. Well let's see, the beams are too low, and I cannot, despite having been here for seven years, account for a wall being in the wrong place. There is a space I cannot access and I can only assume it's accessed from the adjoining house which absolutely freaks me out. Also I have to, my children go to school 28 miles away. It's a heck of a commute!

Bibbity I have the same recurring dream, I always really enjoy it Smile Often it's my grandparents' house or me and DH have moved into an amazing new house with loads of extra rooms. Mine often have an element of not feeling like I'm allowed to be in certain areas though, like I'm a servant Hmm

Hassled · 27/08/2011 22:08

The rational part of me says fair enough.

The romantic yearning for an old house part of me says - Is it really bad of me that I'd move the kids' schools before I moved house? And of course you can't access that space - it's filled with the spirits of all those dead priests.

I most certainly would. Too bad I live in a flat with no build in cupboards.

MadameOvary · 27/08/2011 22:21

Oooh I LOVE hidden passages and stairs - there is a top floor flat in Edinburgh with a mahoosive hallway and on one wall is a door set high up - you cant see it unless you know what to look for. Open it and there are some pull-down steps that let you access a staircase up to a secret room with access on to the roof. I was straight up there Grin

Onlyaphase · 27/08/2011 22:22

Bibbity is that true about the recurring dreams about finding extra rooms? I have dreams like that all the time, where I'm in houses that I know, and open a door that shouldn't be there to find lots of extra rooms there, wings upon wings of extra palatial rooms. Usually populated by old friends and we have a fabulous time.

But yes, if I found a secret passage I'd be down there like a shot, pushing the cat in front of me as I don't have a canary.

ShouldersBackAndNoBiscuits · 27/08/2011 22:22

I think I would start a thread in AIBU asking if I should go through it. It would get more traffic that way. Grin

FannyPriceless · 27/08/2011 22:25

Of course! Because it would lead to Kirrin Island!

And I definitely wouldn't tell Uncle Quentin and Aunt Fanny where I was going.

Zipitydooda · 27/08/2011 22:50

I also have the dream about the house with loads of extra rooms. Usually it's a new place I have moved to and it just goes on forever. I am always a bit miffed when I wake up as I still haven't seen the whole house or decided what to do with the rooms!

We have planning permission to convert our garage into a room. When we have the money we are going to do it and have an opening bookcase in the lounge instead of a conventional door to reach the new room.

Moodykat · 27/08/2011 22:55

Fanny - would you take lashings of ginger beer just in case?!

schroeder · 27/08/2011 22:59

AIBU is shit though I think we should all boycott it.

Mspontipine · 27/08/2011 23:02

Maybe that's where this girl was headed - here

teenyweenytadpole · 27/08/2011 23:03

Oh that's so wierd as I had the dream about moving to a new house and discovering all these extra rooms just last night! And I got so excited about this one room and kept saying "oh I could have this just for ME". Hmmm. Ponders deep inner meaning.

If I found a secret room or corridor there is no effing way I would go into it!! Noooo - have you seen the movie Sixth Sense where he gets locked into the cupboard!? No way!! Also secret rooms make me think of Austrian Fritzl-type scenarios. Too scary.

FannyPriceless · 28/08/2011 18:01

Moodykat - yes, lashings of ginger beer and dollops of whipped cream. I'd have Timmy with me so it would be quite safe when I bump into the smugglers / war spies and accidentally overhear their secret plans.

Our old house really did have a secret staircase. There were doors in the living room and one of the bedrooms that just looked like cupboards - but it was an actual staircase between the two! We didn't have kids then, but when visitors came over we would challenge the kids to find the secret staircase. Was brilliant.

garlicnutter · 28/08/2011 18:40

Am incredibly jealous of hidden staircases, priest holes, gym passageways in the wardrobe AND sulking rooms! Though the wardrobe passageway should really have gone to Narnia, shouldn't it?

Don't have anything worthwhile to contribute, just trying to bump this rather wonderful WWYD into Active Convs :)

ghostofstalbans · 28/08/2011 18:41

no as it would lead to next door's downstairs toilet

garlicnutter · 28/08/2011 18:42

Could come in handy if you were caught short, though!

ghostofstalbans · 28/08/2011 20:51

Grin the risk of running into his bald head is horror enough come to think of it

Our cats found a secret pond that we didn't know we had!

garlicnutter · 29/08/2011 12:35

Ooh, how, rips? Have you got a hundred-acre garden? Or was it under the stairs or summat??

TheHumanCatapult · 04/09/2011 22:09

my great aunts house is like this has 2 sets of stairs with each set leading to a bedroom but inbetween them is what looks like wardrobe its not open it up and you cna walk into the next room

Was great as kids up one set and down the others

TheTamingOfTheShrew · 04/09/2011 22:33

We discovered we had a hidden cellar (a month prior to moving out!), under a trap door - after living in the place for 3 years. It walked over that trap door for years without knowing it was there. Spooky.

chocolateyclur · 04/09/2011 22:57

I would bloody love it.

I used to have a recurring dream when I was little about finding a passage in our neighbours house. It was hidden behind a picture frame and very narrow. In some of the dreams there was a mineshaft train.
