Ok Rule it is! Can't stop now but will be back later.

Have a good day everyone!

I'm not scared of N&S fanfic. I simply don't see the point. Massive summed it up perfectly - Mrs Gaskell's prose is so perfect that anything else (especially if it's as badly written and misspelled as the one example I misguidedly started to read a while ago) would be a waste of time. Besides which, the immortal character of Mr Thornton lives forever in my head.

::cough::

DumSpiroSpero · 21/04/2011 22:34

I read Truce again the other night. It's ok up to a point, but not a patch on the same author's Lovelace fanfic imho. The foodie bits and the striptease make me cringe!

PassTheEasterTwiglets · 21/04/2011 22:39

OMG, I read the Lovelace one yesterday - blimey, mrs!!!!

SupermassiveEasterBonnet · 21/04/2011 22:41

I have to admit I have never read any N&S fanfic, I suppose I've not felt the need simply because the story for me is complete in itself and needs no further additions. But everyone is different, and if you enjoy it, why not?.

I do read other fanfics, sometimes because of those loose ends, as with Spiro's Sparkhouse sequel, and sometimes because it's just fun. Some are really professional and some are not so hot and you can always pick and choose, can't you?

SupermassiveEasterBonnet · 21/04/2011 22:48

And some are just OMG of course[bugrin]

LadyVenetia · 21/04/2011 22:51

Ah Guy as a vampire will be easier I think. Don't think there will be any SB fics like that though. Regarding SB fics along the lines of Truce, ie steamy, not sure....

May also be difficult to find ones that aren't behind a password, too.

ComeIntoTheEasterGardenMaud · 21/04/2011 22:53

Oh my, oh my!

::quivers::

And, for me, the other issue is that I barely find time for the small number of books I read during the year. I'd read even fewer if I read online smut finely-crafted fanfic.

LadyVenetia · 21/04/2011 23:00

Oh there are some lovely North and South fanfics though. Most authors have beta readers to proof read, but of course it's not like having a professional editor on the case.

SupermassiveEasterBonnet · 21/04/2011 23:00

Ah the beauteous Mr Thornton, indeed, a slight frown wrinkling his noble brow as he stares thoughtfully into space...

I am a saddo, zero social life so I get to read loads and loads of books and still have time for fanfics.

SupermassiveEasterBonnet · 21/04/2011 23:01

And mumsnetting [buwink]

ComeIntoTheEasterGardenMaud · 21/04/2011 23:05

Beauteous ain't the half of it.

Oh yes, and mumsnetting. So, Massive, recommend some books for me. No trash but nothing inpenetrable (eyes unread Orhan Pamuk on bookshelf).

LadyVenetia · 21/04/2011 23:06

BtW did we previously discuss Anne Rice's repeated posts on her FB page about Richard playing the vampire Lestat in an adaptation of over books. Means nothing but quite interesting that she has even heard of Richard, let alone likes him as an actor.

LadyVenetia · 21/04/2011 23:08

I found a copy of a book The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency in a charity shop today, so I'm trying that. It's set in Botswana.

LadyVenetia · 21/04/2011 23:09

"adaptation of one of books" I meant to write...:sigh:

LadyVenetia · 21/04/2011 23:10

Arghh...adaptation of one of her books...:third time lucky:

ComeIntoTheEasterGardenMaud · 21/04/2011 23:13

Yes, we had a Mrs Merton-style heated debate about whether The Man should play Lestat, the other one (Louis?) or neither. I think at the time I posted a link to the best moment in the Tom Cruise film, where he's driving over the Golden Gate bridge to 'Sympathy for the Devil'.

I enjoyed TNOLDA and read one or two others, but have never felt the urge to read the rest.

SupermassiveEasterBonnet · 21/04/2011 23:18

Oh, Maud, I only read trash! In one ear, out the other, airport fiction, that's me. Nothing Improving. I'm mostly reading historical novels at the moment, Alison Weir, Philippa Gregory etc.

I never got round to reading that Anne Rice book, I wonder what I did with it. Have you heard any more on the subject, Lady V? The Man can do pale and interesting so well

ComeIntoTheEasterGardenMaud · 21/04/2011 23:28

::Gets out the cup-a-soup and fluffy blankets for poor, dear, misguided and underfed Lucas::

Now, there I was, imagining Massive redaing Proust in the original or perhaps the Chanson de Roland for its authentic medieval vibe. Do you read C J Sansom? Bloke is very keen on him/her.

LadyVenetia · 21/04/2011 23:30

Only that AR periodically reposts about her dream cast on FB.

I tend to stick to classics, detective fiction or science fictiion unless I have a reason to explore something else. But I've been reading some Georgette Heyer recently Grin...I'm not one for modern romance novels, and I only read contemporary fiction (of the more celebrated kind) when something particularly leads me to seek something out.

SupermassiveEasterBonnet · 21/04/2011 23:34

Yup, I've read the Shardlake books, very cleverly done. I like the way they sleuthing is sort of modern in spirit, but with the facilities they would have had in the times.

Is there a new one out at all? I didn't see one last summer.

SupermassiveEasterBonnet · 21/04/2011 23:38

Talking of detective fiction, iIdo like those Stuart McBride ones, set in Aberdeen. Love the dry humour of them all. And Val McDermid and Elizabeth George are usually good.

ComeIntoTheEasterGardenMaud · 22/04/2011 00:14

Night night all!

SupermassiveEasterBonnet · 22/04/2011 00:24

And it's night night all from me too!

PassTheEasterTwiglets · 22/04/2011 07:45

Morning - 1am bedtimes and 6am starts do not go well together [bleary]

LadyV, which Heyer are you reading? Are you enjoying it? As I think I said before, I'm planning to peruse the Cambridge bookshops for the Heyers next week, as I've loved them so much. I don't read very much at all - when the kids are in bed we tend to watch DVDs so I have no time to read. I keep saying I'm going to switch the TV off and read but I never do. This week we watched all of Twenty Twelve on iPlayer - did anybody watch that? It was brilliant.

TheEasterBunnysSmallFootPrint · 22/04/2011 07:47

Morning all!

Well we survived last night - hoorah! Smallboys slept til about twenty to 7 so not bad really.

Lady V, I have read quite a few of the No1 Detective Agency books and quite enjoyed them in a different, laid back kind of way. They are not gripping but there is something quite appealing in the descriptons of a very simple way of life. I generally will pick easy to read novels but occassionally try an award winner and usually enjoy them. I rarely get a chance to read other than on holiday though Sad.
