Do come in. It's never too late to enrol. We have an extensive programme of rigorous academic study and a never-ending supply of Chateau Gizzy and ratafia biscuits.

Thanks, Techno -- I think! Poor Gizzy...
What could be more improving than the academy discussions, I wonder?

LaVieEnTechnicolor · 06/02/2011 21:46

I am a few pages away from finishing The Crimson Petal, so - as the telly has just blown up again ::sigh:: - I am going to immerse myself in Victorian degradation social problems. Speaking of which, we have (I think) paid insufficient attention to this very important academic resource. Here we have .

::dabs forehead with cologne-soaked hankie::

Goodnight, dear ladies.

In advance, Techno, sleep well, sweet dreams, and may you awake refreshed for the new week's fray.

Oh, he of the Higgings Library, in the vid! Lovely!

Oh no! Just spotted the news of the amazing exploding telly. Fie on your audio-visual repair artizan!

LaVieEnTechnicolor · 06/02/2011 21:58

::Looks back at you::

It's an unrelated problem, I think. Last time it was the on/off mechanism. Now, the screen is all pixilated and covered in shimmering pink flashes which even TechnoGirl cannot admire. I will speak to artisan tomorrow, but I suspect the diagnosis this time will be Old Telly Needs To Be Retired (or, rather, has retired itself). So it's back to that earlier discussion about whether 37 inches is big enough or whether we should aim higher for greater televisual pleasure.

OP posts:
Theresaholeinyourmind · 06/02/2011 22:05

Maybe your artizan will diagnose a severe Armitage allergy in the diodes, Techno. The pink flashes are symptomatic...

Talking of sequels, and total lunacy,

anyone?
PhoenixRisingFromTheAshes · 06/02/2011 22:17

Hello

I did think of a sequel (or rather prequel) to a classic which does actually have some literary merit - Wide Sargasso Sea which is a pre-quel to Jane Eyre. So it can happen.

Haven't read Scarlett, though I did plough through Gone with the Wind when I was at school.

Sorry about your telly, Techno.

We haven't seen Tangled, and no pleas to see Gnomeo or whatever it is called yet.

Regarding 3D, I don't think I have actually ever seen a live action 3D movie in a cinema, trying to think...maybe one on IMAX years ago about seaweed.. All I see in 3D are kids movies, I think the last ones we saw in 3D were Legend of the Guardians and How to Train Your Dragon. So I may be getting over-excited without good reason. Still...

I was wondering what the rating for Captain America will be - suitable for a nearly 5 year old, do you think???? Hmm.

PhoenixRisingFromTheAshes · 06/02/2011 22:23

I love Jane Austen, and I love Fight Club, but not sure about Jane Austen's Fight Club...still I bet they had fun making it!

Theresaholeinyourmind · 06/02/2011 22:25

What about Avatar , Phoenix? Not seen that either, of course, I have never seen even a children's 3D movie.

I have a feeling CA will be deemed to have too much of the fisticuffs for real littlies. But then again littlies of today are made of much sterner stuff than I was.

PhoenixRisingFromTheAshes · 06/02/2011 22:38

I haven't seen Avatar either, though I think we have a copy of it (in 2D!) We tend not to go to the 3D version because my son lasts about 1 minute then takes the glasses off, and watches the whole movie without them.

I wonder what the rating will be, perhaps there will be a clue on the trailer.

I am also wondering what the age suitability will be for The Hobbit, mine will be 6 and 8 by the time it's released, or at least for Part 1. Of course it may be circa 3 hours long, judging by the Lord of the Rings movies, so that would be a difficulty in itself. Though I suppose it might be possible to find somewhere that has an interval. But as its an adaptation of a kids book, it would be very mean to make it PG-13 wouldn't it?

PhoenixRisingFromTheAshes · 06/02/2011 22:40

MrsLN, there is a PG-13 version of The Gruinard Project on Wattpad here...just letting you know.

Theresaholeinyourmind · 06/02/2011 22:55

Is The Hobbit a kids' book, then? Showing ignorance here as I never got on well enough with Lord of the Rings to want to explore even further into Middle Earth.

I have a 2D DVD of Avatar waiting to be watched but I seem to have developed different priorities over the past few months...Now there's a surprise.

PhoenixRisingFromTheAshes · 06/02/2011 23:15

Yes, the Hobbit is a children's book. It's actually a surprisingly good read, though, even for an adult, don't be put off by not getting through The Lord of the Rings previously, it's a lot easier to read, and since it is a prequel to LoTR, you don't have to know anything about LoTR. In fact if you read The Hobbit first, then attempt LoTR, that can be a shock because it is so different. I have never attempted any of the other books (The Silmarilian, Unfinished Tales) - they are strictly for Tolkein fanatics, I think.

MrsLucasNorth · 06/02/2011 23:23

Is pg 13 less saucy then? I have no issue with naughty fanfic at all Grin - just not sure how their rating system works - I thought it was R and NC 17 that were the highest ratings?

I am most of the way through Gruinard now, but have just stumbled across a Harry & Ruth scene, which I rapidly grossed over....eeeew!

Theresaholeinyourmind · 06/02/2011 23:23

It looks as if I'm going to have to gird my loins, then, and don some hairy feet. I am still back in the days of Richard III though and have to finish that first.

MrsLucasNorth · 06/02/2011 23:24

I will not be taking any littlies to CA - I want to ogle watch in peace!

Theresaholeinyourmind · 06/02/2011 23:26

Ah, MrsLN, have you surfaced for air then? Grin I wonder if there is any Teletubbies fanfic?

MrsLucasNorth · 06/02/2011 23:42

I told you, Theresa - Ruth & Harry Grin

MrsLucasNorth · 07/02/2011 07:49

Well, if anyone's interested, our man is just about in the CA preview (I did have to watch it twice to spot the split second profile view though)

linky

MrsLucasNorth · 07/02/2011 07:52

And have just read that bloody Hobbit filming has now been delayed until 21st March.

TheSmallPrint · 07/02/2011 08:18

Lol at teletubbie fanfic being R&H!!

Sorry for disappearing last night, the phone died and I was too tired to get the laptop so went to bed instead.

Techno the small folk will be 7 and nearly 4 when CA comes out, the 7 yo would happily come but who knows what the rating will be, a 12 I would guess. DH would be very surprised if I were to go and see it on my own though so may have to wait until Dvd is released and make do with Wolverine and the comely Huge to satisfy my Marvel need Wink.

PassTheTwiglets · 07/02/2011 09:38

Morning all.

The Hobbit was written for Tolkein's own children. It's a very easy read. LOTR, while a billion times better for me, is harder going. Best. Book. Ever (aside from the battle scenes which bore me rigid).

ROFL at Jane Austen's Fight Club!! I also LOL'd at "I Am Not A Horse". T :)

So I was introduced to Mr Porter for the first time yesterday. Oh, Sgt. Twiglets!!! Oh my, oh my, oh my. Both kids are at school for the first times in ages and I'm having a Battle Of Conscience as to whether I spend the next 2 hours painting the hallway as I'm supposed to be doing, or watching the rest of Soldier Boy :)

TheSmallPrint · 07/02/2011 09:43

Anyone here like a bit of ? I've not seen this one before but I quite like it.

TheSmallPrint · 07/02/2011 09:52

I vote soldier MAN.

PhoenixRisingFromTheAshes · 07/02/2011 10:29

Have any of you lot seen the CA trailer - am I the only one doubting that the person in the sub is RA? ::mutters:: I may be going crazy as others are so convinced.
