a nice fluffy pic for the common room

Yes, it was . (Hope, as always, that you can see this).

Hmm. It would certainly have been possible to make N&S over more than four episodes - and would have necessitated fewer liberties with Mrs Gaskell's priceless plot. Ah well.

PassTheTwiglets · 22/12/2010 08:31

Is anybody home? Sorry for my absinthe but I lost my keys to the new place...

Hello cupcakes!

Hope everyone is well! Can't join in the LOTN discussion as haven't heard that. Venetia should've been here by now but bloomin' snow has held her up. Especially annoying as I spent almost 4 hours wrapping Xmas presents last night and it would've been perfect to have RA in my ear for company.

I'm halfway through my re-read of The Hobbit. Nowhere near as good as Lord Of The Rings. I mentioned this to DH and said that there was no real substance to The Hobbit, unlike LOTR and he said that Hobbit was specifically a children's book but LOTR wasn't. Well there you go, I didn't know that. I've read LOTR at least 5 or 6 times (skipping through the boring battle scenes though!) but The Hobbit is more fluffy. Not many memorable Thorin bits so far, aside from him falling flat on his face at the start :)

Lucas says he is feeling a little left out lately. Look at his sad little face There, he says he feels much better now.

Ah, Missy, Well Did You Evah is a real favourite of mine (not that version though :) ) A friend and I used to do a faaabulous version, if I say so myself. "Having a nice time? Grab a line".

Well yesterday was a Day From Hell in the Twiglet household but today is being designated A Better Day. I shall try to be around tonight for a bit of a chat some serious study.

p.s. DH challenged me to name one single female character from Spooks, the cheeky boy :o

Alright love? :)

"So who do you think is the gorgeous-est of all the Boys, then, cupcakes?"

If by "all the Boys" you mean the boys played by RA then it would be Gizzers, hands down. Gizzers is what allmen should be like. Marianne was a right dick, wasn't she?

MrsLucasNorthPole · 22/12/2010 11:20

Cupcakes - you're back! Trust me - you needn't worry about lowering the tone whilst I'm around as the other girls will tell you Xmas Grin!

Well DH is in the doghouse this morning. I'd left the portable dvd player on charge so I could listen to LOTN in the bath and he'd turned it off, so I just reached the point where Uthred was about to take his 8th head (or not, I suspect) and the bloody thing cut out.

He was in bed and I actually woke him up to give him a bollocking! Angry

MrsLucasNorthPole · 22/12/2010 11:26

Ps - I can't believe I went to bed last night thinking this thread probably wouldn't see much action!

Good morning ladies. So sorry yesterday was not a happy day for you and yours, Twigs. I had a bit of a battle with some soup, but otherwise things didn't go too badly for me.
Poor Lucas, neglected eh? I did get him some doughnuts, all to himself. and you know I think he's lovely, but I try to leave him for you.
Looking forward to seeing you later.

Ah cupcakes, good morning to you too. I see you and I see eye to eye on the subject of RA character gorgeousness. Black leather, big sword, guyliner, what more could a girl want? And I do not like Marion one bit. Taking advantage of his one vulnerability like that. But maybe she was just too young and silly.

I do love all the others, especially Lucas, but getting too involved with them in addition to the Giz is more than this frail bundle of female flesh can cope with.

Theresahollyinyourmind · 22/12/2010 11:38

Too early for a restorative glass, MrsLNP?
I had power problems too. Is there something about Uthred that burns up more than usual?

MrsLucasNorthPole · 22/12/2010 11:59

Probably too early as I've had a ridiculously lazy morning and only been up about an hour!

I can't believe I'm starting to fancy a Saxon warrior from an audio book - I really am a lost cause! Blush

Back to Lucas this is rather lovely

And this is the photo on the coaster my mum has got me for Xmas Xmas Grin!

OP posts:
Theresahollyinyourmind · 22/12/2010 12:15

You and me both, MrsLNP. it's the Voice.
Whoever will it be next, a dwarf with a long beard? I see James Nesbitt is off to Dwarf School in Jan. He mentions prosthetics Sad

Theresahollyinyourmind · 22/12/2010 12:16

PS, however are you going to put down your mug on that beauteous face?

bupcakesandcunting · 22/12/2010 12:33

PMSL at christmas Gizzers and Sheriff Xmas Grin

MrsLucasNorthPole · 22/12/2010 13:11

NEWSFLASH!!!

OK, maybe not that dramatic but...

If anyone is thinking of buying the 'Sylvester' audio book, now might be a good time to do so. It's about £10 on Amazon but for some reason is £35 Shock on Play.com, which makes me think that stocks may be running low or it's being discontinued. Also we've got VAT going up in a couple of weeks.

So have just ordered 'Sylvester' and 'A Convenient Marriage' from Amazon, having applied for one of their credit cards first so have got an immediate £10 gift voucher applied to purchase and got them both for £9.52! Xmas Grin

bupcakesandcunting · 22/12/2010 13:18

My goodness he is perfection, isn't he?

bupcakesandcunting · 22/12/2010 13:19

Am a bit of a latecomer to the RA audiobooks. What do you recommend I begin with? We could do a swap if you mad bastards haven't got them all already Grin

PassTheTwiglets · 22/12/2010 13:27

MrsLNP, in that last photo of yours, Harry looks like he's saying to Lucas "you da man!" Absolutely gorgeous shot of Lucas, really perfect.

Holly, yes I read about your blender/processor explosion. I thought that sort of thing only happened in bad TV sitcoms! Poor you. My bad day was a combination of taking the kids to the freezing cold zoo in the snow, very annoying & arguey children, spending 4 hours wrapping up presents and a whopping great dose of PMT :) I had a row with a woman at the zoo - she ran DS over with her pram wheels but then denied it! I was so angry I burst into tears (way to keep your cool, Twigs).

Talk to me about Sylvester and A Convenient Marriage... what sort of stories are they? Is one more thudworthy culturally significant than the other?

Theresahollyinyourmind · 22/12/2010 13:32

What do you think, MrsLN? The Heyer ones are great, though rather polite...
My favourite so far is Lords of the North by Bernard Cornwell, but it's a bit of a pain to get hold of -- beware inferior abridged versions.
And there's always Clarissa

MrsLucasNorthPole · 22/12/2010 13:35

Sylvester

The Convenient Marriage

Both Georgian socail commentary/romance type thingies.

Venetia is good, Cupcakes, although it takes a while for the 'hero' Lord Damerel to appear and you have to wade through a fair bit of Mr A doing a 25 yr old womans, and a 17 year old boys voice in the meantime, but it's worth it in the end (especially Chapter 9 on disc 2 which is very wibble-worthy Grin)

Lords of The North is surprisingly enjoyable given that I'm usually more into Sophie Kinsella than Bernard Cornwell. If Guy's your fave you'll probaby appreciate it even more. It's a bugger/expensive to get hold of but I was lucky enough to find it at my local library.

If you don't mind throwing your feminist principles to the wind you could always start with the delectable Robert Lovelace (who is actually a very bad man)...

PassTheTwiglets · 22/12/2010 13:36

I've done Clarissa and adored it. LOTN sounds a bit scary! It sounds like it's all chopping heads off and battle scenes and so on...

PassTheTwiglets · 22/12/2010 13:37

Thanks, MrsLNP! Sorry, duh me, I could've just looked them upon amazon myself - didn't think of that :)

Theresahollyinyourmind · 22/12/2010 13:44

I didn't find LOTN scarey at all, Twiggers. Though awfuly upsetting when he's the poor mistreated slave. I'm just at the point where he's visiting the local hostelry that also doubles as an Establishment, as Mr Thornton might put it. Notches on the beams in the ceiling and all Blush

Oh, Lovelace. Nobel Prize for naughtiest sentiment expressed in fewest words.

MrsLucasNorthPole · 22/12/2010 13:48

Mine...all mine!

OP posts:
MrsLucasNorthPole · 22/12/2010 13:56

LOTN is really good, Twigs - I wouldn't have picked the book up in a million years but the story is great and his reading of it is just amazing. The way he conveys so many different characters and his pronounciation of the Old English bits in it is incredible.

Hope today is an improvement on yesterday's for you - which zoo did you go to?

OP posts:
Theresahollyinyourmind · 22/12/2010 13:56

Just found a rather good line in a proper published mainstream novel I am reading, describing the heroine's reaction when she sees the hero

Her heart and loins clenched
