I fear that you are right, Holly, and that one has either to reconcile oneself to the deep deep peace of the marriage bed after the hurly-burly of the chaise longue (© Mrs Patrick Campbell) or apply the bellows to the glowing embers. Or summat.

Nonetheless, I cannot believe that Mr Thornton would succumb to middle-aged torpor.

asmallbunchofmistletoe · 27/12/2010 23:15

One of the nice things about not reading North and South fan fic is that nobody interferes with my own imaginings of what happens next. wink

Theresahollyinyourmind · 27/12/2010 23:15

Deep peace, Missy? You're 'avin a larf. Duvet-hogging, snoring, worse...And that's just the cat.

I am repeating her views, Holly, not necessarily endorsing them.

More Polish cordial?

Theresahollyinyourmind · 27/12/2010 23:28

Don't mind if I do. Apologies for being such an incurable romantic, meanwhile. I was just struck anew today by the dichotomy between the Romantic Hero, and the RL bloke.

asmallbunchofmistletoe · 27/12/2010 23:31

No need to apologise, Holly. I have been married a long time - and many of my friends for even longer - and so am not unaware of how relationships disintegrate develop over the years.

asmallbunchofmistletoe · 27/12/2010 23:33

And it's always good to see a dichotomy in the Academy. Have we had any paradigms recently? I crave a bit of exegesis.

Theresahollyinyourmind · 27/12/2010 23:36

I'm fond of a nice bit of that myself, bit of malt vinegar poured over it, lovely with brown bread and butter.

asmallbunchofmistletoe · 27/12/2010 23:38

Quite. Exegesis and chips

Theresahollyinyourmind · 27/12/2010 23:39

Oh no, that was winkles, wasn't it?

MrsLucasNorthPole · 27/12/2010 23:40

Oh God! It's like being back in A-level Media Studies. Perhaps we can try applying Roland Barthes theory of structuralist analysis to some of our fave works...

OP posts:
Theresahollyinyourmind · 27/12/2010 23:42

Or maybe not. Oh yum, I do miss fish and chips. Limpopo River fish is so tasteless and bony.
And there are no mushy peas

asmallbunchofmistletoe · 27/12/2010 23:43

Oh crikey. I envy you your youth, LrsLNP. Media studies hadn't been invented when I was at school. I could try to apply a bit of Foucault to the condition of the mill-workers, if you like.

Theresahollyinyourmind · 27/12/2010 23:44

Sorry you have lost me there, MrsLNP... I know more about Roland Rat than Roland Barthes.

asmallbunchofmistletoe · 27/12/2010 23:45

Holly - I would send you a tin of mushy peas if I could.

Theresahollyinyourmind · 27/12/2010 23:47

Winkles with vinegar and brown bread and butter... ignore me, Missy and Mrs LNP,I had too much Polish Cordial too quickly.

asmallbunchofmistletoe · 27/12/2010 23:47

Tonight's tutorial, but please refer all questions to MrsLNP.

asmallbunchofmistletoe · 27/12/2010 23:48

Sorry for being so dense - sometimes it's not easy to see how the comments relate back.

MrsLucasNorthPole · 27/12/2010 23:49

I can remember v. little myself, although I think it's something to do with breaking a film down into catalytic, cardinal and iconic symbols/scenes.

I loved Media Studies, also got to do one of the first A-levels in English Language as a stand-alone subject.

Govt. & Politics not quite such a success however...Confused

OP posts:
Theresahollyinyourmind · 27/12/2010 23:50

You would think you could at least buy the old-fashioned dried peas to soak healthily (ew)--with a bicarb tablet, was it? and boil for hours, but no.

Theresahollyinyourmind · 27/12/2010 23:53

what a let down my last comment was, after all the intellectual ones from you two

MrsLucasNorthPole · 27/12/2010 23:54

Mush peas - eeeeeewwwww!

I'd rather eat my own toenails.

OP posts:
asmallbunchofmistletoe · 27/12/2010 23:54

Mind you, MrsLNP, when I did my A levels Latin was classed as a modern language. Arf, arf.

Now I am worried for your welfare, Holly. Do you have friends and family in the UK to send you mushy peas, Heinz baked beans, PG tips tea and Marmite and Benny Hill videos?

Theresahollyinyourmind · 28/12/2010 00:03

I do, Missy but it's not worth the hassle, the customs elephants would just eat them impound them. It's okay, you can get a lot of stuff nowadays, like chocolate and HP sauce and even, recently, custard powder, and Bisto, those twin ex-pat Holy Grails,

And the other stuff, like the toe-nails etc., is just a treat to look forward to.
