... how long could you survive with what you have in your house right now?

Do you have any tins/bottled water etc put away in case of a emergency?

Have been frealing myself out reading some wacky conspiray sites (all baging on about something huge happeneing in the next 2 weeks) - Im not be;lieveing it, but it has made me think that one day there could be an event and I probably would only last a week with my store cupboard!

Tee and Tits the apoocolypse doesn't actually happen for another 9 or 10 days yet. The moment of truth will be on the 14th/15th I believe so don't go getting smug yet.

I have a how to identify edible mushrooms book - that should definitely come with us. It would be a shame to survive the alien attack and armageddon only to be killed by a dodgy mushroom while we are foraging for wild food.

Still loving this thread!

You are all mad as a box of frogs though. But lovely with it I am sure. Grin

TitsalinaBumSquash · 06/11/2010 12:08

I am not mad as a box of frogs.... how very dare you!

I am as mad as a bag of badgers.... Grin

nickelbangBANGbang · 06/11/2010 12:12

okay, I was thinking a lot about this this morning.

I can't recall seeing any provisions for tampons and sanitary towels.
I think because of the unlikelihood of being able to get many replacements, then we have to go down the route of reusable ones - either the washable towels that our mothers had, or the mooncup. (can't believe I'm actually suggesting that one!)

rewashable nappies too, for those with babbies.

Umm I'm quite impressed scared by the arsenal of weaponry but it got me thinking that this thread might be showing up on some kind of 'undesirables' internet monitoring. So can I just say (in case anyone is listening) that we promise only to use aforementioned weaponry if we really have to and we're all very nice. Honestly. And if anyone notices an increase in the number of men in suits outside their house let us know Wink

nickelbangBANGbang · 06/11/2010 12:15

babies

thanksamillion · 06/11/2010 12:16

I thought you were being cutsie nickel!

nickelbangBANGbang · 06/11/2010 12:20
Grin no, i just can't type! it took me about 4 attempts to get it right the second time! Grin
nickelbangBANGbang · 06/11/2010 12:43

Right, as well as a survival kit, we also need a list of useful jobs that people can do.

IT bods (those who actually do stuff with computers, physically, not just tap things on keyboards) - can repair radios and communications devices.
electricians are useful - MrNickel, mrTwit and MrHorton
firemen - they can chop wood and rescue people -kungfu's colleague and MrAnde
also, I saw SarahStratton's DP has access.
cooks - all of us, by the sounds of it!

we do need people who can make preserves - which means (not balsamic vinegar, that's austentatious!) we need lots and lots of sugar, lemons, and vinegar (white is better, but malt is fine if we can't)
then all the fruit and veg and meat we can find.
SALT, lots of that too

Does anyone have a household management book dating from before Queen Victoria? That'll have loads of info in how to preserve stuff without having power.
A bloody big ice hole would be good. Anyone have access to an old mansion that might still have one? if not, then a celler with only one access would be useful.

thanksamillion · 06/11/2010 12:52

I made quince jelly last week. I am in the land of preserved fruit (everyone here has a cellar full of the stuff. If you can pickle it they will). Also it gets really cold so no need for an ice hole - just leave the stuff outside.

So you all still need to come to Moldova Grin

Tee2072 · 06/11/2010 12:52

My inlaws have an original Mrs Beeton's as well as the second addition. But we'll have to make a side trip to Derry to steal borrow it.

Is that the right timeframe? [no sense of history emoticon]

mitochondria · 06/11/2010 13:08

undertone - you're right, we can't make our own Vit. C so have to eat it.
Guinea pigs are the same. So if we're bringing the piggies we'll have to have a supply of green stuff. They can eat grass I suppose, as long as it's not radioactive / covered in zombie juice.

Horton · 06/11/2010 13:20

I have a copy of Mrs Beeton! Also, have a good book about keeping goats which may come in handy.

ladyfirenze · 06/11/2010 13:31

I'm new to mumsnet, but an old hat at zombie lore. my own plan has been in developement for some considerable time now, and in the interests of friendship i'd be happy to share my thoughts.

*fill bath and sinks, plus all pans/storage jars etc with cold water

*steal some horses (even though I'm in the city, we have a riding school nearby)

*head to local supermarket - warning, stay on horse at all times

*using smaller children as "grabbers" amass tins, dried, and smoked foodstuffs, as well as fresh things to eat in the short term. You must also procure seeds and tools for growing crops in the long term

*leave city - head to rural areas and shelter in caves

HystericalMe · 06/11/2010 13:56

That is generous ladyfirenze, but see above, we have a warship! This plan is not just about survival anymore... Mwa ha ha...

TinyPawz · 06/11/2010 14:02

Don;t forget me & DD when you guys are over in Belfast picking up tee

She's 4 and delightful....much like her mother Wink

I have a collection of historic cooking and housekeeping books and can also bring along the Book of Boff which is replete with such information.

I can repair hardware and some electronics.

DH just stopped me from buying a trolley half full of chicken korma and beef stew tins in Aldi, which is probably a good thing considering the world might not end until next Saturday now. I think he considers me to have lost the plot completely.

ladyfirenze · 06/11/2010 14:42

oh fuck. can i come on the warship then?

ladyfirenze · 06/11/2010 14:47

whilst it may seem at first that I a) have limited practical skills and b) am in fact rather lazy, do not take this as your primary motivation in deciding HystericalMe.....

At times i have been known to be charming and occasionally witty. Oh and I can carry a tune. I could be warships Jane Macdonald type.

nickelbangBANGbang · 06/11/2010 14:47

You cannot get scurvy if you have vitamin C - vitamin C doesn't have to come from citrus.
anything canned, tinned or preserved will still have vitamin C in it.

ladyfirenze · 06/11/2010 14:48

further to that thought, I have a dv cam. we could do an apocalyptic version of that docu thingy.... the cruise?

ladyfirenze · 06/11/2010 14:49

and we can grow watercress for our vit c

nickelbangBANGbang · 06/11/2010 14:49

ladyfirenz - can you sing or play a musical instrument? wash pots, clean?

if your laziness can be overcome, and you can entertain the troops, you'll be fine.

It's going to be a rather communist zombie-killing warship, you know!

ladyfirenze · 06/11/2010 15:14

aha ha ha things are looking up. am like female jasper carrot from the seventies. can sing funny little songs, play various instruments at slightly below novice level - excepting the penny whistle, which I can some how play the first half of amazing grace on (I discovered this whilst house sitting for a yoghurt weaving family)

I feel strongly that if my duties constisted of entertainment and occassional procuring of blackmarket goodies, my laziness would no longer hold me back....
