As title.

If you're going to raise climate issues please make sure you have your facts right before you post. There is a lot of incorrect PR and social media comment about plastic turf going around at the moment.

I think some people have what could be politely termed an educational deficit when it comes to matters that have a profound effect on the world around them.

If you think my 10ftx15ft patch of fake grass is having a profound effect on the world around me then the educational defecit is yours, not mine.

Well I love my plastic lawn, and I don’t care that it gives you hurty feelings. Sorry!

I was answering a post that said that all lawn haters took multiple foreign holidays. Your lawn doesn't hurt my feelings at all, neither does my neighbours tiny plastic front lawn. There are lots of things in life that I dislike but don't hurt my feelings.

Judging · 30/06/2026 14:30

Do you apologise for it every time friends come over. I feel I’d always be doing that -making excuses for it.

Respectfully, that's the same educational deficit that says 'There's no environmental impact on me flying Ryanair to Italy for the weekend, because the plane would be going anyway!'

Actually, 'educational deficit' is a polite way of putting it.

Are you worried about fumes from the plastic heating up in the sun. And are you worried about the resulting microplastics in your immediate environment and eventually the broader environment (eg if they wash into waterways in the rain and eventually the sea)?

There aren't any fumes that I can smell and I am a super-smeller and super-taster, a generic variant in the population.

The microplastics it might be shedding are going down into the soil not out to sea and no I am not worried about them while the world is using synthetic materials everywhere and wearing synthetic clothes.

Why did you choose artificial grass, instead of say, paving the area?

I cannot think of a single good reason why you would do this apart from the utterly selfish reason that it’s “low maintenance”.

If you don’t like grass you should move into a flat without a garden.

We put some in. The garden is tiered and there is one small section up some really awkward steps that it is almost impossible to get a mower to. We already have 2 large patio areas, a large rockery, and 2 fruit and veg patches so didn't want more of that. There is 1000 square metres of grassed lawn in an area that can be easily mowed. But this small area is near to the house and visible from the window and we wanted something softer there where the kids could play. It works really well for us.

Mumwithagreenhouse · 30/06/2026 14:06

What about those of us who’re disabled? It’s genius when it comes to saving mowing, especially in the summer. Saying “it isn’t right” without thinking of how it could help someone, shows a distinct lack of intelligence on your part.

I am disabled. There are all sorts of gardens you can have without needing mowing. Nor indeed plastic grass.
No need for a personal insult based on a short few lines on Mumsnet. I will not thankfully take it to heart.

80smonster · 30/06/2026 14:32

I’ll go first : it looks like absolute crap. Whenever I see it, I think ‘too simpleminded to manage a real garden’.

I wouldn't have put it in if I thought I should ever apologise for it.

It is. Just like the likely afterlife of artificial lawns in landfill.

If you can’t be arsed with garden maintenance why didn’t you buy a flat?

I truly despise fake grass and judge people who have it.

Maybe it isn't illegal for people to want outdoor space, fresh air and to sit in a deckchair 🤷‍♀️

paleyellowbrick · 30/06/2026 14:33

@Imdunfer
No not really. What all of us do actually matters - you may think your patch of fake grass is irrelevant - it's not. And your attitude simply proves that your attention to and care of the environment around you is not your concern. Proves my point really.

Too infirm and too lazy to manage a real garden. Don't want to have to pay a gardener.

It looks lovely.

We moved into a house with one and I am DESPERATE to get rid of it. We have a dog so it stinks, it’s boiling underfoot in the heat and I won’t let DD play on it. It’s so much money to get rid of though so we’re stuck with it for now

Are you my next door neighbour? She’s in exactly the same position with hers. It absolutely stinks.

MinglyMadly · 30/06/2026 14:35

Iocanepowder · 30/06/2026 13:52

I have artificial grass so in case op doesn’t come back, here are some things i can answer 😂

-DH chose to put it in for low maintenance. We have 2 little kids. Can be used all year round more easily. Primary school has done the same.

-We have put lots of real plants around the patio and at the front of our house. Lots of bees etc

-We have been assured that it will not devalue our house. Our house is a 3 bed family home in a sought-after area and apparently the lawn still appeals to families.

-Yes the grass does get hot, but generally if the grass is too hot, it means the the sun is too hot for my young kids to be out in anyway without shade.

-Next door has their garden entirely covered in patio.

It might be worth doing some research on the impacts of micro plastics on humans and the chemicals they contain which can be absorbed through the skin or breathed in when the product off gases.

I'm not saying there is a problem but I would seriously be concerned about this, particularly with a young child.

If it’s that small why haven’t you just planted it? There are things that grow well in shaded poor quality soil that would have looked lovely.

"Simple-minded?" I'd rather have fake grass than an ugly attitude. Real grass can be grown, but you clearly can't cultivate basic manners!

wandawaves · 30/06/2026 14:32

Because we didn't want to look out on paving.

Also see above ref the drainage that would have been required to pave a lawn which slopes towards the house.

Do you fly abroad? I’m sure you’ll claim you don’t. And even if you don’t, I’ll bet my house that some of the fake grass haters on this thread do - at least once a year!

"No true Scotsman" is a logical fallacy and makes you look silly.

So many virtue signalling hypocrites on this thread who love to preach to get your virtue points in for the day, but are too thick to realise that your one holiday flight this year generates way more carbon than my fake lawn ever will in all the years I have it!

But hey ho, let’s not let facts get in the way of things 😉
