Just that, really. I am drunk and bored, and I've noticed in the past on MN, many sweeping statements made about sex workers that I don't always agree with (i.e we are all brainwashed into thinking we are happy with our career choice, but really we are miserable)

For background, I started when I was 19, maybe late 18. I got into it because I was lapdancing and noticed those who offered "extras" after hours made 3x what I did. I was young and stupid, and sex just felt like sex to me, so it was quick, easy money. I left when I was 23/24 and met DH.

I got back into it when I was in my early 30s and left DH with nothing to my name, but left again when DH and I agreed to a suitable child maintenance arrangement, and I could afford to live.

I went back into it 2/3 months ago when possible redundancies were announced at my work, and I realised benefits covered only around 2/3 of my basic outgoings. I am in my early 40s with two adult children who still rely on me. DS is in uni, and DD has just started an NMW job; both still live with me.

@thestudio "Do you really believe that these men are just 'lonely'?
Or can you accept that, as well as being lonely, they are fundamentally abusive"

But what about men who are deformed in some way or just very, very ugly and who otherwise would have absolutely no hope of sex. They do exist, and they do use sex workers. Are they evil and using women as commodities? Don't you think they would truly love to have a genuine relationship with a woman?

Deformed and ugly women usually have to manage without paying for men's bodies.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 22/03/2026 13:48

If your DH left all his assets to your DD, surely you don't need to financially support her?

People who are deformed in some way can still have relationships with women without resorting to going to prostitutes, and they do.

Hi OP

Do you kiss your clients?

If you’d had a better mum/parents, do you think your life would have turned out differently?

Thanks in advance x

I do kiss clients. That is the part I like least, I don't like kissing in general, even in my private life. I think if I'd had different parents, I wouldn't have left home so young, I would have gone to uni earlier than I did and been able to build a better career, so yes, my life would have been different.

@Mapletree1985 I can be a bit lazy sometimes, so I don't always enjoy the thought of having to get showered, dressed, and leave the house after a day at work. I enjoy meeting new people.

@Bepo77 They chat first, but generally not for long, and they make the first move.

There are specific websites, and I don't need to be drunk. I was drunk last night/this morning because I'd been out with friends.

Thank you for this thread OP and I hope you do come back to it.

A poster above said that people have a lot of mixed feelings towards prostitution: confusion, disgust, pity, intrigue, feeling mystified (and more), and I agree.

There’s such a spectrum ranging from impoverished women being forced against their will to have sex by their pumps, all the way up to highly paid escorts who earn thousands…… and God knows how many different scenarios in between, with many of them being like yours I imagine.

I went to Amsterdam about 5 years ago and visited the Red Light District OIt of pure intrigue and I was fascinated. The normalcy and openness of what was going on just took my breath away…. I was in shock. It wasn’t ‘bad’ shock though, it didn't horrify me or anything, it was just disbelief that prostitution was occurring so openly, with absolutely no shame (not saying there should be) and it was being treated as normal as going to Specsavers for eye test.

Me and DH didn't know what to make of it.
But then again, when you’re raised in a society where prostitution is viewed in the way it is in the UK, then it’s a bit of a mind f**k to see it so normalised somewhere else.

A lot of Dutch people DON'T like it being normalised in Amsterdam, remember. It's also worth noting the workers are often poor women from other countries, not Dutch women who usually have better options

Also women in long term marriages who find their partners repulsive but have sex with them still know their partners. The likelyhood of them being being violently attacked or murdered is less than the person who is selling their body.
I really never understand this arguement.Women do use men, women are not perfect but being with 1 man mostly is safer than having multiple unknown men.

On average, one woman is killed by an abusive partner or ex-partner every five days in England and Wales, which translates to about 1.4 women per week. This statistic highlights the ongoing issue of domestic violence in the UK.

Why ask a rhetorical question? Just come out with your observation about OP not paying tax.

Um, isn’t that itself a rhetorical question?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 22/03/2026 13:54

Do you/have you done drugs alongside the sex work?

Carla786 · 22/03/2026 13:54

Because prostitution affects all women. Every single one of us.

Whilst men and society still believes that a woman’s vagina/body can be bought all women will be viewed as potential products as opposed to whole human beings.

You can see from some of the posters on this thread that the warped opinion that men’s needs are so important that they simply can’t do without.

For example the poster that has suggested men who get to buy sex are less likely to rape women and that means prostitution is a good thing. When in reality rape has nothing to do with sexual desire and everything to do with control and power. It’s even used as a weapon of war for god’s sake!

Whilst 1 in 4 women will be raped in their lifetime we would do well to talk about prostitution for what it is. The type of men that use prostitutes do not see women as whole human beings and this has a knock on effect for all women and girls.

Any man that buys sex can never know whether that woman is trafficked or suffering terrible abuse and can’t get out and therefore any man using a prostitute is an absolutely vile human being.

Imo rape IS to do with sexual desire : warped into a twisted & misogynistic form.

It's definitely not done from sexual frustration though: loads of rapists have wives and girlfriends or are sexually successful.

So you think it's safer being a prostitue than being with your own husband?Your statistics are not related to or comparing the two also don't prove either way one is safer than another.

When Jesus said that he still told the woman to stop her sin (adultery) though, he just prevented her from being stoned. I'm not saying OP is sinning, she's not, but that doesn't mean this is a good choice.

What has Jesus got to do with anything?

Jane143 · 22/03/2026 13:57

Do you ever enjoy it or do you feel revulsion?

Tigercrane · 22/03/2026 13:57

Op, yes thanks for coming back to the thread, I hope you have a long, safe and happy life.

IAMAthroway · 22/03/2026 13:57

I pay tax on my earnings from my main/day job but no, I do not pay tax on my earnings from this. I'm not entitled to any benefits, so I don't know why I would need to tell the benefits office. Once my redundancy goes through I will be entitled to around £900 a month if I haven't found another day job by then.

I don't need to support DD or DS, they both inherited from DH, but I choose to because I want them to save their inheritance to buy a house once they leave home.

The prevalence of human trafficking in the Netherlands has been recognized both domestically and internationally.

In 2017, it was estimated by the Dutch National Rapporteur on Trafficking in Human Beings and Sexual Violence against Children that more than 6,000 people in the Netherlands fall victim to human trafficking each year.

Two thirds of the people trafficked, about 4,000 people per year, fall victim to sexual slavery and abuse.

In 2016, the mayor of Amsterdam admitted, for the first time, that the Dutch experiment to curb abuse by legalizing prostitution had failed miserably. Policeman in Amsterdam’s infamous red-light district were quoted by Dutch media as saying “We are in the midst of modern slavery.”

She’s short of money because she chooses to live at a level unsustainable by the more conventional ways she has tried of earning a living. Fine, it’s her choice, but let’s not pretend she has been forced into prostitution (as I know some poor girls/women are).

Imo rape IS to do with sexual desire : warped into a twisted & misogynistic form.

It's definitely not done from sexual frustration though: loads of rapists have wives and girlfriends or are sexually successful.

The misconception that sexual assault is about sex is not only inaccurate but also harmful. It perpetuates victim-blaming, minimizes the trauma experienced by survivors, and obscures the true motivations of perpetrators. Sexual assault is, at its core, an act of violence intended to exert power and control over another person. It is about domination, intimidation, and the assertion of superiority.
When we frame sexual assault as being about sex, we inadvertently sexualize the act, suggesting that it is somehow related to desire or attraction. This is simply not the case. Perpetrators may use sexual acts as a means to achieve their goal of control, but the underlying motivation is not sexual gratification.
Consider the different forms that sexual assault can take. It can range from verbal harassment and unwanted touching to rape and sexual coercion. In all of these instances, the common thread is the abuse of power. The perpetrator is using their position of authority, physical strength, or social influence to violate the victim's boundaries and assert their dominance. This can occur between strangers, acquaintances, family members or even within intimate relationships. The dynamic of power imbalance is the critical factor.
This distinction is crucial for understanding the patterns of sexual assault. Perpetrators often target individuals they perceive as vulnerable or less powerful. They may prey on individuals who are younger, disabled, or in a subordinate position. Recognizing this power dynamic is essential for prevention efforts. It allows us to identify and address the factors that contribute to this imbalance, such as societal norms that perpetuate gender inequality or institutional structures that protect perpetrators.

Can I ask why that is? I know you mentioned one is at Uni and one is in a NMW job but so are many others and they don't have a parent resorting to the sex trade to help them out. You said your DD inherited from your Ex - not enough to set her up then? When do you feel they will be independent?

This. Your children should suppprt themselves, you shouldn't have to sell sex for them.
