Can you suggest anything for someone who hasn't found CBT effective for anxiety mainly because they have untreated ADHD and a lot of thoughts?

Would it be better for the ADHD be treated with ADHD medication or the anxiety with anxiety medication?

if I was in that situation I would want to speak to an ADHD medication specialist to work out with me if I would benefit from ADHD meds / anxiety meds or both -

have you looked into ADHD coaching ? Some people find it quite helpful in developing scaffolding to manage the ADHD and navigate life in ways that aren’t medication - not necessarily instead of medication that can be huge game changer for some

If CBT can help autists, why does CAMHS not take on autistic teens?

Different Cahms services will vary massively -
the thinking can be that they don’t ‘treat’ ASD. Because it is neurological wiring -

BUT Cahms should treat the psychological disorders that are highly prevalent for people with neurodivergences - such as social phobia, disordered eating, emotion regulation etc etc

cahms is massively underfunded -
that often underpins the problems within Cahms

Could CBT help me with constant and worrying thoughts about being alone in old age? My worry stems from the fact that I have no children and am an only child myself.

Not sure, would need more info -

have a look at the CBT treatment protocols for generalised anxiety disorder

and

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ( ACT)

you may relate better to one approach than the other and then have an idea about what may help ?

I suspect that CBT is a therapeutic approach which requires an extremely high level of readiness and willingness to change from the client at the beginning , which is unrealistic in many cases and definitely with children and young people.

this highly motivated stance to change is obviously great,
but mixed feelings about making changes,
fear about letting go of coping mechanisms that maintain the problem
thoughts of not deserving a better life
not believing they can do things differently
are all challenges that a CBT practitioner should recognise and be able to unpick and work with - sometimes a person can’t / chooses not to change - but the therapist should attempt to address the motivation difficulties to a certain extent

Does cbt work for gender dysphoria?

BeaPerry · 15/03/2026 20:15

LayersInTheRock · 15/03/2026 18:30

But this presupposes that the problem is the person’s thought processes and within their control, when often if there is a biological cause of their difficulties or it is due to difficult life circumstances they may already be doing everything possible that could be expected to cope and CBT is effectively just blaming them for the situation.

Thought processes are not within our control but our relationship with our thought processes is something we can learn to adapt

if someone is currently experiencing difficult life circumstances CBT may not be helpful -

CBT shouldn’t be about training yourself to feel OK when things are not -

it would depend on how your PD affects you,
and what you focus for psychological therapy would be ?

No idea but it’s what I’ve been told I need. My main issue is hearing voices and seeing angels. Bugs on my skin and on the walls.

Does cbt work for gender dysphoria?

CBT can be really helpful for body dysphoria / body dysmorphia but I am not familiar with CBT for gender dysphoria

I personally think it is useful therapy for some people with some difficulties -

I’ve worked alongside hypnotherapists who utilise CBT principles - it works well for some

Is it worth going private? I hear people have more success with it I assume because use sessions aren't limited as they are with the NHS?

Agree 👍
many NHS providers are short changing patients on the dose of CBT they give -

look at the NICE guidelines for the recommended sessions of CBT for particular disorders - provision often falls woefully short

but when going private - if you are specifically looking for a CBT - ensure they are accredited with BABCP - you can go on their website and check if they are currently accredited - it gives a quality assurance of training, clinical supervision and ongoing development

Is CBT effective for young people who are autistic?

@dippedydoodah

It was very effective for my son but I think it was largely to do with the fact I stipulated that the therapist must have knowledge and experience of working with young people with autism.

We had to wait 8 months for her but she was absolutely brilliant with him. I don't know how she did it but she got rid of all the hang ups and idiosyncrasies he'd had since childhood.

What is CBT most successful in helping with, and can you recommend a good book for someone who wants to try it without having to wait for a therapist appointment, please.

Suggested reading would depend on what your therapy focus / difficulty is ?

My husband was deeply traumatised by his stem cell transplant. Any mention of anything medical sent him into total panic. A few sessions of CBT online and he was back to himself. It totally worked for him, not sure how but it did. So grateful to her.

Ah yes, in my experience the old-skool psychotherapists, psychiatric nurses, were like this- not so much these days !

CBT is a collaborate therapeutic process -
the psychopath does not work collaboratively in any shape or form -

Would CBT work well for anxiety and bipolar? Really struggling with anxiety side of things at the moment. Waking at 2am daily , imposter syndrome etc.
