Indeed!

OP is doing very well staying classy! I’d have lost my rag by now 😆

You might get less hate if you post in the actually AMA subforum?

You can report your own first post and ask MMHQ to move the thread.

I'm not bothered about the hate, it's part of doing an AMA I guess.

Greek islands.

I like you!

not bitter not jealous- just could not define my worth in this way.
I went back to a do a job after retirement as I wanted to make a contribution
I enjoyed rising to a good level in my career and helping to mentor others
It is natural to talk about your outside interactions in a couple, cannot think what I would say if it was instead of "got a Belgian trade mission coming in next week" it was "I cleaned out that cupboard today"

@Breadcat24 and equally I’m sure some people would prefer their whole worth being defined by their career quite sad. If you have nothing to talk about outside work that’s on you

muggart · 06/03/2026 17:27

why do you find rich people insufferable?!

It’s a bit sad that even within a marriage you couldn’t find anything to talk about other than your job.

£2M mortgage free home.
Water front holiday home on the IOW.
2 Mercedes.
DH earns £600k pa.

LOL. Not very rich comparatively speaking IMO.

FreshInks · 06/03/2026 17:28

I’m tired of them because I don’t buy it. Genuinely wealthy people don’t tend to brag about how much money they have. All posts like this prove is that money can’t buy class.

SleeplessInWherever · 06/03/2026 17:15

They think it is their £2.38 because it’s shared, and widely miss that that’s because their husband shares it with them.

Personally I’d find absolutely no pride in buying a house outright, using money that’s come out of a hose that my ex husband bought without any financial input from me.

I’d feel like I’d never earned or really owned anything.

Being “kept” is my idea of actual hell.

Exactly how I feel.

Oh, that’s a shame if you wouldn’t have anything interesting to spend your time on apart from housework if you weren’t working. I’m sure the OP has plenty of interesting things to do and talk about.

Breadcat24 · 06/03/2026 17:29

@LuckyAmy1986 Plenty of stuff to talk about apart from work -we have an allotment, go to the theatre, read a lot, have animals. I just think you need some outside input.
My life is not defined by my career but working in the field I do I make a societal contribution.

Oh gosh. So not actually rich then? 😂 Bless.

What on earth were you hoping to achieve? Make people feel like shit? Anonymous bragging to total strangers? Quite curious.

PS… according to a lot of posts on mumsnet about salaries and lifestyle, you’re a veritable pauper. I’d have at least bumped up £2m house to £5m and swapped IOW for Monaco. You know, to fit in. Aspiration is everything.

i don’t see it as bragging. What would be the point of that on an anonymous forum?

BestBefore2000 · 06/03/2026 17:30

What is the saying that wealth whispers?

Money talks, wealth whispers… you typically won't hear extremely wealthy people talking about how rich they are, or how many assets they have, if they do… they probably have a fear of not being seen as significant.

Iho · 06/03/2026 17:31

keepwakingup · 06/03/2026 16:31

OP you made the cardinal sin of calling yourself rich so posters will fall over themselves to call you not rich whilst simultaneously calling you tone deaf 😆

Do you ever worry about younger women trying it on as your DH earns well?

Honestly no, because he's never given any hint of being unfaithful and he works from home the majority of the time.

How did your DH get into property development? Does he have a trade that helped?

Exactly this. The few people I’ve known who are extremely wealthy are family friends and a friend of mine. The latter worked and played hard. The others did charity work, studied but also worked hard. One woman was the much younger wife of an older man and once he’d died she was much happier.

Why don't you work?

Because I don't have to and never enjoyed the corporate world when I was a part of it. Quitting was one of the best days of my life.

Interesting post. May I ask a couple of questions please;

Would you say you spoil your children?

Do you worry about their future?

How much would you typically spend on a 2 week summer holiday?

Bet you have a beautiful garden 😁

BestBefore2000 · 06/03/2026 17:35

@Iho There are many non-corporate jobs available. Have you tried any of them?

Is your DH’s income your sole income?

BrendaThePoodle · 06/03/2026 17:35

I have never been the Isle of Wight, is it absolutely beautiful? It’s on my list. Im put off Cornwall, everyone says that they don’t like tourists. I wouldn’t want to intrude.

Do you travel around the uk much? I think if I was as wealthy as you I’d probably see a lot more of the uk, just stay in nice places.

Do you shop at farm shops, buy local organic produce for every meal?

Where is the best restaurant you’ve dined in?

Are you polished? Nails and hair done? Own a Dyson hair dryer?

Is your make up from Charlotte Tilbury?

Do you ever see something you want but can’t justify it? I feel like that in Morrisons 😂

My household income is under 37k for 6 of us and we’re not poor, but I have to be careful and frugal. I would love to just walk around the shop and thinking “fuck it” and buy what I wanted without worrying, I think that would be my pretty woman moment, having a full basket in marks 😂 was it great the first time you realised you were rich?

Sorry @Iho ive asked shit loads ☺️

tooloololoo · 06/03/2026 17:36

I don’t think that is necessarily rich

we earn more / house value more. Rolls Royce Lamborghinis
I wouldn’t say we are ‘rich’ but very comfortable.

we don’t talk about it either
