Off the back of another thread I realised am ridiculously organised and my house is always tidy, always ready for visitors etc didn’t realise how tidy I was until I started commenting on and reading the other thread. So just a fun, or nosy AMA.
maybe there’s nothing to ask 🤣 thought it might be interesting though…

Oh a handy tip for laundry was to buy plenty of underwear and do one socks and jocks wash every fortnight, usually on a quieter dry day to hang out.
When you do this, the other landry days are much quicker.
I also do light wear washes of gym gear, fleeces, sports gear, light fleece towels, all together, shake of whit vinegar keeps everything super fresh.

Whites are once a fortnight, kept super white.
I hate laundry so call everyone to collect theirs, fold and bring to their rooms.

I throw stuff in the dryer, but only turn it on when everyone is around to collect.

Organised with food too, batch cook, always do extra potatoes and rice to do a stir fry or roast them in the airfryer.....resistant starch is great for weight management too.

I replaced all the large heavy towels with quickdry ones, game changer for us. Two each, in a different colour. Everyone knows theirs. Washed regularly and dry in 15 minutes.

Minky single line is fantastic for quick drying too.

I'm the same, I tidy as I go. I came from a very disorganized home growing up and I like my home to be tidy so I can find things easily.

Dh is not like me but he's getting better . Ds is a Sky documentary about hoarders in the making!!

I do a wash a day, I don't have a laundry basket, clothes get left at the top of the stairs every night and then we put half a load on in the morning. We don't iron, we fold from the line or the dryer.

We all have a lot of hobbies but keep stuff well organised.

I am not a size 10 😂🤣

Is your house “surface” clean (tidy to look at but skirting boards and under bed not tidy type of thing!) or are you a deep cleaner (could eat your tea off the floor at any time?)

My house is tidy and clean. I do at least 1 wash daily. I honestly think the biggest thing is teaching kids. I have 4 (only 3 live at home with me now) and I work full time. Kids strip and remake their own beds once a week and tidy/clean their own rooms. They may the table for tea and clear away after tea automatically because they have always done it. Laundry gets taken straight up to their room and put away because they have always done that. If they eat in their rooms (lunch at weekends) or the lounge then dirty plates are brought straight into the kitchen and put into the dishwasher because that’s what they’ve always done. Youngest is 11. They’ve always done this sort of stuff so there is never any drama about them doing it - likewise in school hols and I am at work they will run the hoover round etc. It all takes minutes and keeps the house running like clockwork. I’m a single parent and I have 3 boys so I feel it is my responsibility that they grow up knowing this is what everybody has to do

This is where I’ve gone wrong. My kids are slobs, just like me. 😢

This is my thinking.
I have two children plus me and DH .
I am like you - my house is lovely and tidy and clean, and I have to do at least two loads of washing every day.
Literally every day. It’s beyond a joke but we all wear clean clothes / pjs every day, and I change bedding once a week at least.
Also DS thinks it’s acceptable to grab a clean towel every time he has a shower ..

Clean pyjamas every day??

I have no idea why some posters seem to passive aggressively 'out snide' each other and try and pick apart every thing an OP says. It's weird and it's happening on just about every thread just now.

Classic Mumsnet isn't it.

Bit of dust never hurt anyone, definitely a surface cleaner with periodic deeper ones.
Skirting boards 2-4 times a year would be enough for me.

sundayfundayclub · 30/08/2025 09:08

I do 7+ loads a week.

I don't do this much washing with 2 dc

supersuppers · 30/08/2025 09:09

So what would happen on busy days when you get home and there’s only just enough time to make a quick meal and then rush out the door to some of the kids activities or school meetings or something else, do you leave the clearing up or do you make yourself late so that the house is tidy? Cos these are the choices we all have to make each day to get through the days.

They have their own bathrooms? How big is your house?

I often think my house would at least look tidier if it was a bit bigger as the clutter would be more spread out!

Nope! They just fill it with MORE crap!!! 😭

I'm not a tidy person at all but my house always looks tidy and organised - it's only because it's big and I have lots of built in storage on every floor so it's very easy to make sure everything is put away.

sundayfundayclub · 30/08/2025 09:11

I change bedding weekly unless an accident or something. My dc don't like pjs but if they did I would never let them change weekly. I don't wash my jeans after a single wear either.

IsItAllMenopause · 30/08/2025 09:11

Hi OP,
how often do you clean inside your fridge? I'm not too bad at keeping on top of everything else (probably because 2 of my DC have moved out now!). I wonder if I should do a weekly or whatever chuck out of stuff in the fridge? Otherwise it always seems to build up and be a horrible big job!

Parksinyork · 30/08/2025 09:13

You only wash bedding every 3 weeks? Even in summer? I’m doing some MN pearl cluching now.

How do you organise things like meal planning (bane of my life with different needs) and planning holidays?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/08/2025 09:14

Are you my elder sister?

sundayfundayclub · 30/08/2025 09:15

Some horrible comments on here. It’s AMA not plop your own opinion and criticise. Start your own ama if need be.

I agree

Mine do their own rooms, beds and laundry and aren't allowed to eat in their rooms ( also they set the table and feed the dog) but I still have to remind them all the time! And my house is still a mess! How do you do it? Just persistence?

I don’t know 🙈 they just have grown up knowing there is no other option. I have very few rules about anything but everyone getting stuck in to keep the house ticking over isn’t optional.
Yesterday we got home from holiday after me driving for 7 hours and they unloaded the car, unpacked everything and put first wash on because why wouldn’t they? Actually that is my proudest thing - they genuinely don’t understand kids who leave plates on the table after meals or don’t put condiments away etc or leave an empty crisp packet in the lounge - it just doesn’t make sense to them.
Oh and I let us all eat tea separately last night 🙈 (7 hours in the car together!) as we all needed space but they still brought their plates etc down straight away.
It’s like brushing teeth and wearing clean pants isn’t an option - neither is not contributing around the house.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 30/08/2025 09:16

I am very envious, @Kitchenbattle.

I have ADHD and I suspect my husband does too and we have two DC under 5 so I can't relate to any of this.

I have a question. Why is your username Kitchenbattle when it sounds like your kitchen is a nirvana of cleanliness and productivity?

We clean ours weekly just before shopping arrives. It takes minutes if done weekly.

I love that some are criticising the OP for not clearing enough "you don't wash pjs every day" and then others are implying she cleans too much.

I am just here for some cleaning tips.

Do you wash everything together regardless of fabric or colour?

She was at school 4 days this week, the one from Thursday was perfectly clean, she has a half day on Friday’s, she showers every morning.

bedding I do one bed a week so next week is dd, the week after is my bed.

Each person's bedding gets washed every 3 weeks?

Changingtides1234 · 30/08/2025 09:23

Do you iron? I’m terrible at ironing. Not sure it’s still a thing, that’s why I ask

Cinaferna · 30/08/2025 09:23

Kitchenbattle · 30/08/2025 07:13

You see this is what I’ve realised. I don’t have a daily routine. I work 8-4:30 mon-Fri.
I tidy everything as I go, I don’t leave things out of place.
in terms of cleaning- I sweep/hoover, wipe down the kitchen after dinner each day.
shower screens get wiped down during/after every second shower or so.
bathrooms get wiped down pretty much daily as I’m getting ready/brushing teeth. So the sink and towel rail etc. toilets get washed once/twice a week when I’m using them. So I will go to the toilet flush etc and then I will use toilet cleaner to clean the inside and a bathroom wipe to wipe it down and flush again, wash hands and off I go.
I do most of this stuff without a plan as such though.
hoovering the house is something I just get up and do randomly. 🤣
saturday morning is laundry day (mainly because Saturday I have few electrics so I make the most of that!) laundry= wash, dry outside, fold/iron and put away so by Sunday eve everything is done. If the weather is bad, I’ll use the dryer and everything is done by Saturday night. I don’t iron everything so when I they are dry I sort them into a fold pile and an iron pile. I will iron everything and then put everything away at the same time.

Interesting. I literally do everything you mention, except I do the loo and shower screen every day. And I don't always put my laundry away. But my house is really not clean and tidy all the time. It always looks like it needs some help. I think we just have way too much clutter.

What about dusting, polishing, wiping surfaces and windows?

Cucy · 30/08/2025 09:23

I think tidying as you go and not having clutter helps.

What is your routine when you get home from work?

I find I get home, I cook and do a bit of cleaning. Then I eat and watch some Tv and then it’s time for bed.
I struggle to find the time to fit it all in and now I’ve started running after work so there’s even less time.
Then weekends, it’s shopping and ferrying kids round etc.
