Off the back of another thread I realised am ridiculously organised and my house is always tidy, always ready for visitors etc didn’t realise how tidy I was until I started commenting on and reading the other thread. So just a fun, or nosy AMA.
maybe there’s nothing to ask 🤣 thought it might be interesting though…

because, shock horror, you can actually wear clothes more than once, especially if you wash regularly and are not involved in manual labour

Yes washing clothes that have only been work once it's terrible for the clothes and the environment ( as it's flushing wipes)

Ontheedgeofit · 30/08/2025 08:40

I’m pretty much like you OP. My tips are

  • clean as you go
  • put things away immediately
  • i have a laundry type basket in my dressing room for things which need to get given away. Ie I try something on, don’t like and know I’m never going to wear it again and it goes straight in this bin and not back in my cupboard
  • pantry is organized with containers and I regularly go through and throw out expired or old products
  • as a pet peeve when I was younger was the number of jars of condiments etc in my parents fridge. So we don’t buy loads of pickles and jams and I regularly throw out bottles which have been sitting there a while
  • we have kitchen wet wipey things to wipe up spills and crumbs immediately
  • Two dishwashers (if you have the space) so you leap frog them. Clean and dirty. Nothing gets left on the counter waiting for the next load.
  • one junk drawer in the house for lose cables, plugs etc which gets sorted out regularly and disposed of. This way if someone leaves something lying around, they know which drawer it would have been thrown in.
  • scent diffusers for fragrance
  • all bins have bin liners always
  • shoe rack at the door
  • if I compare the clutter in my home vs my sisters home it is evident that she buys her kids a lot of crap which gets left lying around. We don’t do that. And their toys (well when they were younger) had boxes and containers and very obviously our values instilled in them so they were taught to clean up and put things away (ps this isn’t child abuse 😂)

But I think the number one tip is to deal with things immediately, and don’t let them back up.

What cleaning products/items can you not be without? Do you have one of those cleaning caddies? Of so, what goes it in? Any cleaning tools that come in handy for specific jobs?

Just a basic bathroom spray and citrus floor/bathroom wipes for the bathroom.
A detail spray for the kitchen and glass cleaner

My house is super tidy too. I also don't do loads of washing. Towels weekly, bedding every 10 days or so depending on season, clothes when dirty. I don't have clutter/stuff on windowsills or tables, I don't have much on the kitchen worktops. I don't have many clothes, always clearing out. I have space in wardrobes and empty drawers. I clean on rotation once a week, so dusting one day, bathrooms another day, hoovering another etc, but never do anything every day other than the washing up and wiping down kitchen tops.

I also garden every day by the same method, doing a particular task each day. Big garden, very tidy.

Imbusytodaysorry · 30/08/2025 08:40

BusWankers · 30/08/2025 07:50

But when do you do bedding usually, you MUST do more than 2 loads a week?

Even a 10kg washer won't fit 3 sets of bedding.

Why does your daughter only wear 3 shirts a week at school and not 5?

Seriously ? Maybe her dd isn’t at the stage /age of needing to wear a new shirt every day. maybe she isn’t a messy child and also keeps it clean .

howdowedo · 30/08/2025 08:41

OP, I’m like you too, everything you do is the same as me! (Except I’m in a tiny 2 bed!)

TreesWelliesKnees · 30/08/2025 08:42

PhaseFour · 30/08/2025 08:16

I'm not tidy or organised, but I realised after a conversation at work a while back I'm the only one amongst my workmates who does this, which I'm pretty sure helps to keep my weekly washing down (although obviously not to OP's levels).

Mumsnet, I give you the ONE-a-towel-week-rule:
everyone is allocated one bathsheet a week, and only over my dead body will anyone get more than one a week! If they choose to leave it on their bedroom floor and it goes musty, so be it. Towel change day is either Saturday or Sunday (weather dependent).

i think it took everyone one week to realise that it was their best interests to hang their towel up each day to air, rather than leave it on the floor in the bedroom.

When I introduced this regime change it was a game-changer, I can tell you!

Re the OP - you sound like the person I strive to be, but never quite make it.

However, when your DCs are older, wear adult sized clothes and have weekend jobs, and a gym habit, the number of washes per week will likely increase.

You've inspired me this morning OP. There's an organised woman somewhere inside me, I just know there is!

Surely at that point they're old enough to do their own laundry?

Kitchenbattle · 30/08/2025 08:42

Unicornskies · 30/08/2025 08:28

I think the daily stuff like kitchen and bathroom sounds normal but what about dusting, cleaning windows, skirting etc? I find that kind of stuff takes ages, how often and when do you do that?

Where do you keep all the miscellaneous crap like cables, batteries, paperwork that needs some sort of action so you can't file it away yet but you can't quite do it that very minute? This is the kind of crap that accumulates in our house and makes it look untidy.

In the miscellaneous, man drawer….neatly.

You see this is what I’ve realised. I don’t have a daily routine. I work 8-4:30 mon-Fri.
I tidy everything as I go, I don’t leave things out of place.
in terms of cleaning- I sweep/hoover, wipe down the kitchen after dinner each day.
shower screens get wiped down during/after every second shower or so.
bathrooms get wiped down pretty much daily as I’m getting ready/brushing teeth. So the sink and towel rail etc. toilets get washed once/twice a week when I’m using them. So I will go to the toilet flush etc and then I will use toilet cleaner to clean the inside and a bathroom wipe to wipe it down and flush again, wash hands and off I go.
I do most of this stuff without a plan as such though.
hoovering the house is something I just get up and do randomly. 🤣
saturday morning is laundry day (mainly because Saturday I have few electrics so I make the most of that!) laundry= wash, dry outside, fold/iron and put away so by Sunday eve everything is done. If the weather is bad, I’ll use the dryer and everything is done by Saturday night. I don’t iron everything so when I they are dry I sort them into a fold pile and an iron pile. I will iron everything and then put everything away at the same time.

When you say “flush”, you don’t mean flush the wipe I hope 😱

Kitchenbattle · 30/08/2025 08:42

Yes! One drawer for crap. That way everyone knows where it is if it gets cleared off a counter. And that drawer regularly gets a proper clearing out and throwing away.

Daisydoesnt · 30/08/2025 08:45

I’ve come to the conclusion that if ‘home’ is really important to you (it really is to me), then we all make compromises to make that version of home work best for us. As well as being a neat freak, I’m also a maximalist: it’s not possible to have too many patterns, colours, throws, cushions, rugs, pictures, lovely objects, flowers. That makes keeping everything clean much harder, but that’s a compromise I’m willing to make. Not having a dig OP, but I couldn’t live with your style it’s much much too minimalist for me. It would make me sad.

Likewise, I can live with just spot cleaning the kitchen floor during the week and then it gets vacuumed and washed on a Friday. But I could never not wash and iron my bed linen every day! We each have our “musts” and our “it’ll dos”.

NeverOneBiscuit · 30/08/2025 08:46

OP, I’m very similar to you. I rarely ‘do the cleaning’. I tidy as I go, made easier by keeping on top of ‘stuff’ so there is a place for pretty much everything.

I usually clean the kitchen whilst I’m there doing (waiting) for something else. Same with the bathroom. Spare few minutes before I go out? Have a quick whiz round with duster & polish, that sort of thing.

I’m not house proud or obsessive, just like things clean & tidy. This way it’s not a big clean & downhill from there, just a general keeping on top of things.

I’m not big hobby person, but I love to go for a walk. I love to read and I love puzzles. So that’s what I do with my spare time. And I watch TV.

I have a friend like this who cleans for an hour a night and she basically has no hobbies or interests. I have SO many things I like to do, I couldn't imagine wasting an hour a night to cleaning. I do a bit of daily cleaning and then on the weekend, but I have to say, I generally do find people with immaculate homes are quite boring people.

Kitchenbattle · 30/08/2025 08:47

Superhansrantowindsor · 30/08/2025 08:34

How do you deal with sentimental items? I have so many pictures, cards, toys, clothes from when the dc were little that I just can’t part with. Takes up a lot of room.

I have boxes with really special items in the kids rooms /top of wardrobes etc. and a few boxes in the attic. Besides that they go, I’m not the type of person to hold on to many things.

Well last night I went for dinner and drinks. I’m leaving the house now to do some jobs and get breakfast out.

Not OP but a fellow tidy person

cables & batteries that aren’t being used go in a box marked “electronics”

paperwork that I need to action goes into my notebook so I will remember to do it next time I’m at my desk (this happens so rarely now everything is paperless).

paperwork (& random kids drawings etc, any paper) I don’t need to action goes into an in tray type of thing & I sort it out once it’s full.

Ontheedgeofit · 30/08/2025 08:52

Yes and I’ve bought a home paper shredder. 12 months of bills etc kept and as I’m filing I shred the old stuff.

Checkard · 30/08/2025 08:52

We sound similar.
Large 3 storey house here, 3 kids.
My house has always been super tidy and friends love visiting as they feel it exudes calm.

Likewise the kids friends love this house, lots of sofas and heavy cosy blankets. The heavy blankets were excellent TK max buys, that are still perfect and in use a decade plus later.

My husband is tidy... this is a huge bonus.
I too tidy as I go, always.
Loos wiped down very regularly, we have two downstairs that would be quickly done daily as visitors are in and out.
I leave a very tidy kitchen every night, could not face a messy one In the morning.

We have stuff but plenty of storage.
Lots of bedding because people stay over, so we need it.
Every day I would return anything to the children's bedrooms.
They are mostly responsible for them.

I am mean with laundry so we all rewear clothes, particularly heavy jeans and hoodies.
Every summer during hot weather I do a day of washing everything like blankets, jackets etc.

One towel each per week.
They have double beds which they strip and I wash every couple of weeks.
They shower all the time and dont share a bed so I get a fortnight from sheets, three weeks if its mid winter.

No coffee tables, a nest of tables in every room.
I like the house to flow and coffee tables look messy to me.

We have LOADS of plants, some very big. They look fabulous and give life to a home, but do require regular watering and minding.

I have a cordless hoover which I will give a 5 minute run a round downstairs, regularly.
Spray mop is fantastic too.

Small regular daily bursts to keep on top of the house have worked for me.

Oh and my children are used to being called to collect their stuff, pick up stuff, put shoes away.

I made that effort to train them when young and they eventually learned to do it to avoid being called to do it.
It was in their own interest to hang a coat, take out a lunch box, put shoes and bags away, rather than be called down 4 times to do each thing.

In essence, tidy husband, storage, regular daily tidying are the kets to it.

FoxIn25 · 30/08/2025 08:53

You've inspired me OP. I'm going to do a big tidy today then aim to follow your example of a little bit all the time and see if it can stay clean for the week. I also don't think it's gross to only wash your sheets every 2/3 weeks so already with you on that!

How do you get away with doing laundry only on a sat with 4 ? And do still get to go do stuff with your family at weekend if you’re at home all weekend doing house chores ?
Remember OP , they won’t remember us for how good we were at brushing the floor 🤷🏻‍♀️ …

I have no idea why some posters seem to passive aggressively 'out snide' each other and try and pick apart every thing an OP says. It's weird and it's happening on just about every thread just now.
