Off the back of another thread I realised am ridiculously organised and my house is always tidy, always ready for visitors etc didn’t realise how tidy I was until I started commenting on and reading the other thread. So just a fun, or nosy AMA.
maybe there’s nothing to ask 🤣 thought it might be interesting though…

My response wasn’t an unkind response it was more a response of wonderment. I didn’t call anyone ridiculous.

I never said that you did!
I said I am aware that it is ridiculous.

TheSolivagant · 01/09/2025 21:28

Despite some of you protesting, OP is giving excellent advice. Clean as you go rather than a big session once a week.

It's not difficult to wipe a sink and taps or clean the loo whilst you're in the bathroom. Likewise cleaning the shower whilst you're stood in it after your shower.

Clean up the kitchen when you've finished eating before sitting down in front of the telly.

And it's no wonder there are so many useless men when their wives/partners are making excuses for them and indulging their slobiness.

I speak as a Reformed Slob.

Kitchenbattle · 02/09/2025 06:46

@TheSolivagant thank you.

This is true.

Mr Morph is a hoarder with eleventy million “projects” on the go at any one time. And he’s never happier than in the middle aisle of shite in Aldi or Lidl.

And he can’t even be trusted to load the dishwasher anymore 🤣 so it’s all down to me. And I just can’t do things like I used to be able to.

I used to have a cleaner but then we got this place and thought we would do it up for our retirement. And that went a bit fucked. But hey ho.

And we have a dog (who I pay the wee lad next door to walk). But that means mud.

We migth have the same DH. Mine is a hoarder. He grew up with alot of scarcity and it frightens him. So he buys everything in bulk- groceries, toilet paper, etc. He 'fixes' anything that is broken himself as he does not like spending money so our kitchen table currently contains the innards of a lawnmower and has done so since before the DCs broke up for the school holidays.

We have been together 21 years and there is NOTHING I can do. I try and rein in his food hoarding in particular but it's a deep-rooted response to trauma.

I now work very part time and I clean the house 1 hour downstairs and 1 hour upstairs daily. It's still a mess. I cleaned up the sitting room before bed last night and I can now see open biscuit packets and apple cores and 3 empty cups (he has insomnia).

So- a partner who matches cleanliness is a crucial thing, not to be underestimated.

I did insist on a gardener every 2 weeks and a cleaner every week. That's my line in the sand.

Oblomov25 · 02/09/2025 07:08

@naematesused the word manky

I don't see it that way. I think we over-wash these days. It's not actually recommended to wash your clothes or yourself too much. It dries the skin. Why is everyone manky? How dirty do you think we all are?

she refered to pyjamas. (Not that this is relevant because I didn't particularly want to bring me into it, but I normally sleep naked, apart from for the last 25+ years, a pair of pants because I have to clip my diabetic pump onto something).

But I can't see the need for all thus daily washing. I do have a shower every morning before work.

Like the poster who refered to the old style of bedding where you changed a sheet once a week.

I just wonder when it became the norm for all this washing. Even babies they say NOT to bath them every night!

Kitchenbattle · 02/09/2025 09:52

I’m not denying that it’s easier with my partner being on the same wavelength but I categorically tell you (from experience) that my house would still be the same with a partner who wasn’t on the same wavelength.

Mine didn’t used to be. But then I became disabled. And we bought a Reno. It’s shit. I can’t do it and there’s no point of getting a cleaner coz it’s a Reno.

and he’s blind. And deaf. And I’m not able to walk with a fuckton of MH issues. We make some pair 🤣🤣🤣

Fresh pj bottoms with no pants = wasteful, rewearing pjs with fresh pants = not wasteful? Make it make sense

LoafofSellotape · 02/09/2025 18:36

IstillloveKingThistle · 31/08/2025 23:54

I know 🙄

Its ridiculous

I don't wear pajamas but I wear night shorts and wear a clean one every day. I think I used to get a couple of nights out of them but not these days.

FurForksSake · 02/09/2025 18:42

Pants take barely any water to wash, you could probably put forty pairs in a wash to 5-10 pyjamas bottoms. Pants cost a couple of pounds, pj bottoms £10+

my underwear are much smaller than my pj shorts…but I’m not trying to make anything make sense. It’s what works for me. But if we are trying to make it make sense…for shits n giggles
1 T-shirt
1 pair of shorts
7 pairs (that’s assuming I change every night but I don’t) that’s 9 items max( 7 of which are small items)
vs
7 T-shirts
7 pj shorts/pants - that’s 14.

Are you washing bedding and towels daily or something?

I she's saying that all her household bedding takes 2 to 3 loads, and she washes them once a week...

Presumably there's 3 sets that need doing each week.

GentleJadeOP · 04/09/2025 11:13

Do people still iron their bedding? I NEVER have

Yes I iron and starch the bedding. I love freshly starched sheets

I will iron pillowcases but not the duvet I’ll shake that out.

When I used to do the laundry for a winter homeless night shelter I washed and ironed everything. At home… nope. dh does all the laundry and gets them back on the bed same day and very marginally damp and they are pretty wrinkle free.

Yes. I am definitely under the impression that ironing bedding was an anti-bedbug/lice thing. Not necessary in a relatively clean household with permanent residents. For me the pleasure of ironed sheets does not outweigh the fuss of ironing them! Drying them stretched out on the line on a sunny day however is absolute peak living.

I loved the feel of fresh starched and ironed bedding with clean PJs one of my favourite things. And the smell of line dried too - amazing

It's not the norm to wash everything every day, it's Mumsnet! Out in the real world, most people don't wash everything that's been used that day. But on mumsnet there's a reporting bias because people don't want to be called skanks.

OP I do similar. I do little and often cleans around the house and I always wipe down the fridge before the big shop day when it is almost empty.

DH does the hoovering, we do a few loads of laundry on Saturday and leave to dry in our upstairs bathroom so we don't waste time with outdoor airers etc or doing laundry in bits through the week.

Try and put things in their place, it's really difficult though as we have small children but it doesn't take long to get the house tidy if we need to.

Haven't done a deep clean hardly ever as we just maintain through the week.

Kitchenbattle · 06/09/2025 08:14

So here I am again on a Saturday morning…I have one wash in (all lights) and the washing machine is 90% full.
and the second one is waiting(in picture 🤣)…that’s a big one so I think it might be a load and a half (we’ll see).
I always do my laundry on a Saturday because it’s the easiest time for me and I have free electricity on a Saturday from 8-midnight. 🙌

I’m super organised and my house is always tidy.AMA
