Off the back of another thread I realised am ridiculously organised and my house is always tidy, always ready for visitors etc didn’t realise how tidy I was until I started commenting on and reading the other thread. So just a fun, or nosy AMA.
maybe there’s nothing to ask 🤣 thought it might be interesting though…

Good thread! I admire your consistent 'do it as you go along' method - I'm too lazy and haphazard for that, unfortunately. Also, you've been remarkably patient, given how many posters have been desperately trying to pick holes and find ways that you're doing things wrong. Smile

Rivertrudge · 30/08/2025 16:31

Fair enough!

Bathroom mats? How often do you wash bathroom mats? I wash mine once a month at the most. They only get used to wipe wet feet.

Am I doing it all wrong?

Yeah I wash mine every 3 weeks also…every week is not required imo.

I guess because you've started a thread specifically saying your order and tidy but that doesn't equate with clean levels, I don't mean that as a criticism, but obviously a lot of people wash clothing and bedding more often.

Floundering66 · 30/08/2025 22:07

Thanks for this thread! I struggle to do a lot as I go (one year old always tugging at my ankles) but I can see it working when he’s older. You inspired me to clean the bathroom sink when I went to the loo earlier 😂
I’m another that changes pyjamas after 4/5 wears and I change my bed sheets every 2-3 weeks. (Shower once or twice and day and not a sweaty person!)

I shower every day. As does my DP. I already stated if I sweat in the night then I change them. It’s set in my head for every three weeks but COULD end up being less. I’m a very clean person. Dp showers literally twice a day most days. As I said upthread I would change the bed if it smelled In any way, but it doesn’t, nor does the pillows get stained as someone else asked.
It works for us.

Those people probably wash too much then, don't they?
If you wear a good deodorant, it shouldn't be necessary to change tops every day. I change my bed clothes only when necessary and it generally is about every three weeks (though I usually sleep alone).
All these people washing outer clothes and towels after one use are being extremely wasteful.

HostaCentral · 30/08/2025 23:23

A pp who washes her jumpers, which go over her shirts, every couple of days, stood out to me. Jumpers last days (and days), I hand wash all mine too, so couldn't be washing them so often. Maybe washed once a week..... Is that disgusting?! I mean, you don't wash coats every couple of days right?!

Once a month? What, every month? Oh dear, I’m obviously a slut…

Hoolahoophop · 31/08/2025 07:13

I'm envious of you, my family are naturally tidy and organized and I started the same. But my DH is the complete opposite and it's exhausting trying to make a naturally untidy person keep tidy. .y house is now a tip and it makes me very unhappy. The kids have learned to follow his example rather than mine.

Kitchenbattle · 31/08/2025 07:25

BartonInthebeans · 30/08/2025 13:52

Wonder if this is where I'm going wrong, I would struggle to imagine mixing things like tea towels (that are used for drying dishes) with my underwear, plus children's clothes, in the same wash. The mix you describe in the first paragraph would be 3-4 washes for me

@BartonInthebeans I meant to respond to this yesterday, it is absolutely ok to mix these items as long as the temp is high enough and you use a biological powder. Time and energy saving 🙌

Depends if they have spills on them. I have a very messy husband who can wear a jumper once and it’s got stains all over it… drives me mad.

mambojambodothetango · 31/08/2025 07:40

Not read whole thread but the key thing here from the OP and PP who say they are the same - is to have another tidy adult in the house. I am tidy and DH is not. So it doesn't matter what I do or try to teach the DC to do - DH leaves stuff lying around and doesn't ever encourage the DC to tidy so the house is always a mess.

LoafofSellotape · 31/08/2025 08:00

I thought I was a dirty minger only washing the bath mat weekly 🤣

It really does make a difference yes, well for one…it means that I’m not doing it all by myself. If I cook, then they clean and he cleans to the exact same standard I would. He will clean the bathroom after use the same way I would. He equally hates clutter and loves organising so we are very much on the same page.

Op thanks for starting this. I'm still not sure I'll ever be like you but it is making me rethink some things!

I've realised lots of my stuff doesn't have a 'home'. I googled 5s. In an untidy and disorganised house, where would you start with this technique? Have you always just automatically done this without putting a name to it, or did you (perhaps a long time ago) start somewhere intentionally iyswim? Hallway, kitchen, bathrooms...? Feeling overwhelmed just now

ETA I'm very minimalist, decluttering is one thing I think I have got the hang of. I hate stuff.

Hoolahoophop · 30/08/2025 07:20

Are you really thin? One of those people who never sits down and burns energy always being busy?

Id like to be one of those people!

This!

Aroundthefirepit · 31/08/2025 08:49

Sorry just realised you answered the 'thin' question already.

I would treat your house like a work zone. Stand in each area and think about what you do in that part of the house on a daily basis what do you need there? How much access do you need to it etc? And then design the space to be as efficient as possible. Yes I always did this even as a 13-year-old and I didn’t know what it was. I would set up my vanity table with the things that I use the most of the very front for ease of access and in order of use. I always loved it how I used the room what way the flow worked. Simple things like putting your keys by the front door for example because you know that they’re the last thing you’ll grab before you leave the house, the same theory can be applied to other things.

I love this thread, thanks OP. My issue: sentimental or “maybe I’ll need this”. Take the vanity table you mention, or the pic of your bathroom cabinet. There I saw you have one bottle of neutral nail varnish. I have a whole box with about 60 nail varnishes. This is my fault. I get seduced. How would you approach this? A big chuck out seems ruthless, wasteful… tho of course it was wasteful of me to have bought all those colours, unused. I’ve tried the spark joy thing, but it all mounts up again… thanks OP!

Aroundthefirepit · 31/08/2025 08:56

You make it sound so natural and simple. It's inspiring. I think you could do this for a living!

Well nail varnish is not my thing 🤣 clearly…but that doesn’t mean you have to get rid of any at all. But what I would do is.
find them all
lay them out
test them all
get rid of any that are clumpy, water or doubles of.
then I would organise the ones you keep depending on where you want to store them/use them in something like the pics attached.

I always said if I won the lotto, I would do it as part of a life coaching type thing. And then the person who I coached would be able to pass it on and mentor another person too, so it would be like a paid forward type of scenario but with life coaching and life organising. 🤣

Absolutely agree. I go through periods of being on the ball and much tidier but then my DH just leaves rubbish on the sides and clothes on the floor and I find my standards slip quickly!
