Off the back of another thread I realised am ridiculously organised and my house is always tidy, always ready for visitors etc didn’t realise how tidy I was until I started commenting on and reading the other thread. So just a fun, or nosy AMA.
maybe there’s nothing to ask 🤣 thought it might be interesting though…

OP I'm questioning how clean and tidy your house really is if you wear pyjamas all week and change your sheets every 2-3 weeks

We shower daily…we are clean. Pjs for a week is not uncommon. They don’t smell so why would I change them?

You wear pj's for five days!! What am I reading here. I wouldn't let my kids wear pj's two days, it's hot and they sweat. I wash everyday sometimes twice. How can any family only wash twice a week!! Do you kids not do sports and need sports clothes washing? I wash everyday sometimes more

Yes my eldest does sport, she has more than one set of sports clothes. I did a wash in weds and two today. My dc don’t get sweaty in bed to be fair. I’m the most sweaty at moment(thank you Peri menopause!) but as I said I change if I get night sweats.

I’ve just folded my first load of laundry the other load is on the line now because the sun came out….this is what I have…
7 towels
3 school shirts- dds
2 sweatshirts- mine
a face cloth
a hair towel
7 pairs of underwear- dds
9 pairs of underwear- mine
19 pairs of socks
2 pairs of pjs belonging to Dp- shorts and T-shirt
3 tshirts- dd
1 pair of shorts- dd
1 polo shirt- ds
3 T-shirts- mine
2 T-shirts - DP
1 hoody- dd
2 T-shirts- ds
1 pair of shorts - ds
3 pairs of underwear- ds

it may not seem like a lot of others, but it seems like enough to me when I did a wash on Wednesday evening. The washer Wednesday evening actually consisted mostly of my DS’s and DP’s bits and a couple of my T-shirts.

Before anyone comes at me asking what are we wearing on the bottom my DP wears jeans during the week. I washed a pair for him on Wednesday and a couple of shirts that he wore to work. I was in work for two days this week and I wore a black pair of jeans. They are still clean. I then worked from home on Wednesday and they wore a pair of jogger bottoms. They are still clean. Yesterday and today I wore a pair of black leggings. I will put them in the wash tonight.
my dd wears a kilt to school, that’s still clean. It doesn’t need to be washed. Her jumper barely got worn as it was fairly hot this week. My ds had school two days this week and his jumper and trousers are still perfectly clean. I washed his polo shirt.

god that made me more tired than actually doing the laundry 🤣🤣

😂Definitely where I'm going wrong. Two dogs and a cat and it's constant fur and walking leaves and mud in as the weather changes. Which then goes up the cabinets and the skirting board and it's a never ending battle...

This isn’t meant as criticism of you as we all have our own priorities but I’m constantly amazed at the amount of washing/clean clothes some people feel is necessary.

The idea of needing clean all-over clothing, bedding and towels every day seems crazy to me. Clean socks and pants yes but if everyone showers every day, unless a person suffers from uncontrollable sweating or has a heavy manual job or has actually got dirt/spills on their clothes I don’t understand why there’s a need for clean ones every day. It’s a very modern idea that has only come about with the advent of automatic washing machines/dryers.

Clean pyjamas and all bedding every day - why? (Unless you suffer from night sweats)

As for clean towels every day - how can that possibly be necessary when all they’ve been used for is to wipe clean water off clean bodies?

IMO not only do some people get unnecessarily obsessive about this, and even boast about their cleanliness as if the obsession is something to be proud of, but it’s really bad for the environment to waste so much water (and makes clothes wear out more quickly).

I can assure you I only change bedding every 2 weeks tops and towels no more than once weekly.
I just have loads of washing. DH and DDs do loads of sports and I work in a hospital so anything I wear to work reeks of “hospital” smell
when I get home.

Add to that tea towels/ washing cloths and bathroom mats, it all adds up. My laundry basket is always full

They have their own bathrooms? How big is your house?

I often think my house would at least look tidier if it was a bit bigger as the clutter would be more spread out!

I fear the clutter just multiplies to fill the available space…

Sunnyscribe · 30/08/2025 16:33

You sound like quite a naturally person, I wish I was like this.

I can see you said you don't pick up after your partner. Is he also a naturally tidy person or is it something that has caused arguments or something that you've had to work on to get to where you are now (which sounds very harmonious!)?

Same with kids really, if you don't pick after them much do you find they're naturally like this (may have inherited your tidy gene) or is it something that's had to be worked on?

Thanks :)

my partner is naturally tidy, so we’ve never had to discuss it. We’re both very much on the same page. Which helps a lot. The dc have to be reminded at times yes, depending what’s going on I might pick up one or two things after them, but they are generally quite tidy. My DD can let her room get messy at times, but she’s not allowed out to meet friends unless it’s tidy so she tidies it when she has too.

I’m the same OP! I have five children aged 14 down to 14 months. My house is spotless and everything is line fresh and clean. It’s exhausting to be fair, but I was raised in a home that was dirty, untidy and tiny for the number of kids. I wish I could relax, but my head feels really messy if I know something isn’t done. I do 5 loads of laundry every day and if something gets spilled on my sofa I behave like a bit of a maniac. It’s not much fun.
And I change my bedding three times a week because I have two babies sleeping in there with us. The other kids get theirs changed twice a week in summer and once in winter. Dog gets bathed 3 times a week. Ask me anything.

FurForksSake · 30/08/2025 16:40

our kids have chores such as loading or unloading the dishwasher, I’ve just walked into the kitchen and realised it was untidy from lunch (I didn’t make or eat lunch and I’m suffering from a very difficult issue with my hip which means I can do very little), I can’t easily load it but even if I could it’s not my job. I’ve called the relevant child and he’s going to do it.

Do your kids have jobs to do? Do you think your house is tidier if they don’t do jobs that affect the main living spaces?

im 5ft2 and 8st7 and an easy size 8. That appears relevant 😆😆😆

AuldWeegie · 30/08/2025 16:41

a wuestion for tidy people. Is this because you only stream telly and read or play games online, or do you have physical books, dvds, etc?

I have seven floor-to-ceiling bookcases, and shelves full of lego and board games, and am absolutely defeated by the idea of getting tidy and clean, and staying that way.

The only jobs the have is to keep their rooms tidy and to put dishes away after eating, clearing the table etc. that’s it.

I have cleaned up cat sick twice and cat poo twice already today.

I do a load most days. 4 people. 2 cats 2 dogs. But I am home so easy to shove one on. Mondays are my designated pet beds and throws and towels days.

I am not a tidy or organised person at all. But I have managed to imprint in my brain that Mondays are pet bedding days.

ETA- I am 52. 5 ft 2. 12.5 stone. Anything under 10 stone is a distant fantasy for me.

Thanks for the insight!

You're obviously really well organised so kudos to you!

Two things jump out to

  • the very large house. We have a very small one and I'm constantly shifting things around. There's just not enough space to hide things awa

Having 5 bedrooms is a big asset.

  • your dp tidies too. Tidying after my dh is a full-time job, in fact it's probably not possible to keep with his mess

There's no hope 🙂

ShouldIStaySelfIsolated · 30/08/2025 16:50

I'd bet half the people giving you grief about the wipes are the same people who think clothes need to be washed every day to be 'clean' and think that microfiber cloths should be used for cleaning despite them shedding microplastics into the water every time they're washed.

Some people on here need to give their heads a wobble.. OP is not claiming to speak on behalf of every single possible financial background/circumstance, just saying what works for her

Honestly if you follow the “5s” technique then it will work. Everything in its place and put back once not in use. Being systematic really helps. That and not having too much “stuff” in the first place i suppose.
