No doubt I'd get a load of shade about 'bragging' but that's not the intention. If anyone is interested in asking any questions about travelling regularly with a little own, feel free to ask.

I often travel just the two of us as his Dad can't get as much time off work as I do.

I'd love to stay on xcaret! So expensive though as I'm a teacher.

We stayed at Occidential Xcaret which gave direct access to the park.

I think that was £2k for one week. DS was only 8 months old then. He rolled for the first time on DH birthday whilst there. It's lovely having those memories mixed in with travel.

I think AMA should be renamed Fiction Fest.

Is there any tangible benefit to the child from all this travelling?

Well yes creating a child who'd confident in new surroundings and adaptable to change. A child who sees their parents relaxed and happy. I don't think it gets much better.

Is there a reason you haven't ventured to Asia, Africa or Oceania? Do you plan to?
How many of those countries were just brief stops on a cruise?

I've visited all of them and we've just booked a three week trip to Mauritius, then cruise around Madagascar, Seychelles, Oman, UAE and Qatar.

We're also off to Singapore and Bali in November. I'm nervous about how he'll be with jetlag going to Asia.

How on earth can you afford it?

I’m assuming working 4 days a week, you have significant child care costs?

What job are you doing that you have so much excess money to be able to holiday every single month?

I have zero childcare costs now thanks to the 30 free hours.

I earn £60-80k don't want to say specific

Do you realise he will probably remember very little, if anything, of it.

How bizarre, my reply has been hidden immediately. I wonder if it's because I'm not posting from the UK?
(I travelled here by EV by the way).

Nobody cares how you got there . . .

bridgetreilly · 13/09/2024 18:23

Dinoswearunderpants · 13/09/2024 15:24

No because I often pay to offset the flights. Most airlines allow this option now. And whether we're on the flight or not, that flight will still take off so we might as well be onboard.

Carbon offsetting is a con. And if there were less demand for flights there would be fewer flights.

What an incredibly stupid question.

How so?

Before you DS, did you travel more "off the beaten track"? Ever been to any more unusual/adventurous places?

I'd be in no hurry to return to Romania. Whilst it was nice, we've done it now.

How long did you spend there?

Only a weekend and it was Bucharest. Of course the countryside would be incredible to see but it's not high on my list.

If you've spent a weekend in Bucharest with its gritty brutalist buildings, you've not really visited or seen Romania which is a beautiful country

And the countries where you stop at a port from a cruise ship and everyone pours off for a few hours before pouring back on also isn't really visiting a country. However I'm sure your LO loves being on a cruise ship (also bad for the environment he's growing up in, but hey)

I've always been a safe traveller. I did organised tours mainly with G Adventures but I've been places like Belize, Guatemala, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia.

As it stands, I would bring take DS to any of those places. Maybe when he's older but only with DH too.

Wow that’s amazing!!

I am not a great traveller but want to be.

You’ve inspired me to look at a trip abroad next year. So far we’ve only stayed in the UK (since having kids!)

Some of the comments are really bizarre - child won’t remember so only for OP’s benefit? They won’t have memories that they can recall but the experiences will absolutely have an impact on them as they grow and develop.

Is everyone else just locking their kids up in a room until they have better memories?

Scirocco · 13/09/2024 18:30

Dinoswearunderpants · 13/09/2024 18:05

Do you have plenty of time between the journeys? My advice would be to take it at little ones pace. You need to factor in toilet trips and snack times.

I've bought one to use in Orlando for the first time as I'm worried how busy it'll be. I also have an air tag on a bracelet for him to wear.

Thanks! We've a few hours to spare at the airports and DC loves planes, trains and all things plane- or train-related. Toilet trips are a worry!

Eldrick47s · 13/09/2024 18:30

Is he not too young to (fully) appreciate these places?

How much do any of us remember from that age?

Barely remember anything before age 4 (do recall having a Ghostbusters jumper in 1984, taking part in Sport Aid (since learned it was a follow on from Live Aid) in 1986, and various school days...but almost nothing before 4 years old.

An overseas trip to Disneyland at that age of course would be magical as it's easily understood, but I couldn't imagine most other places having much impact.

This isn’t a question, but when I was 3 (getting in for four) we lived in the USA for three months as my Dad was working there and I remember it. So everyone saying he won’t remember - you don’t know that.

Can't you see a difference between living somewhere for 3 months and spending a weekend there?

ShoopShoopShoopShoop · 13/09/2024 18:37

Sounds unsettling for him. Why do you do this? And not just let him be at home?

Abracadabra12345 · 13/09/2024 18:39

rainsofcastamere · 13/09/2024 17:45

We've been to all those places too OP with my son, including several more but he's 12 now. My favourites were always New Zealand, Alaska & Norway, until I visited Slovenia last month. It. Is. Stunning.

We were in Slovenia too and I agree it's stunning. We loved exploring the caves, lakes, forests and beautiful architecture.

Though you need more than a weekend of course

Look at that age, pop a pull up on then pants over. That way you are covered in case the worse happens. They shouldn't get confused as they'll have pants over the top.

Fascinating. I still thinks it's excessive, that's a lifetimes worth of travel crammed into a few years.

We're (3DC so no chance I'm doing much solo) reasonably well travelled, but DH has a weak passport, so somewhat limited. Perhaps we'll catch you up in 30 years?

Really enjoying this notion that air travel has zero environmental impact because the planes are flying anyway 😂😂😂

And apparently objections are because we are jealous

InterIgnis · 13/09/2024 18:43

If you haven’t already OP, I would recommend more of the Balkans. Belgrade, Nis, Novi Sad, Zlatibor, Sarajevo, and Kotor to name a few off the top of my head. The Belgrade - Bar train is worth a look too.
