@Lifeomars are you morbidly obese ? or are you a healthy BMI and so need to fuel your body with the food you consume ? If you have a lot of fat stored in your body, then if you eat a VLCD, it will utilise these stores of fat for energy instead.

That's a very unhealthy diet.
Why not make things, rather than buy packet foods?
Why do you not eat vegetables?
You state you're paying; who to and what for?

That is my plan after the 12 weeks this was just a kick-start as I had to lower my cholesterol and bp quickly. I'm paying new you plan and I'm paying for the products that I eat, access to nutritionists, dieticians ect and access to a Facebook support group

I don't have a question for the OP but I'm interested in the concept of a VLCD. I was diagnosed as anorexic for about about a year in my 20s - I would eat between 500 and 800 calories a day. I'm not trained in nutrition but did think about things like vitamins and nutrition. Mostly egg whites, tuna, spinach, mushrooms. Sonetimes an apple. I weighed 57kg at the start and 44 at the lowest point. The weight loss was dramatic at the start and then plateaued.
What is the difference between this and a VLCD?
(I'm not going to pretend this thread isn't incredibly triggering for me. It's vaguely exciting to think there is a recognised "diet" that gives legitimacy to eating like this, although realistically I wouldn't return to it as it cost me my job and my relationship at the time.)

My DD is in recovery from anorexia after having been hospitalised for medical stabilisation 8 times, before being admitted to a psych ward. Going into any kind of calorie deficit is significant trigger for those with a genetic predisposition to anorexia, but studies show that women following VLCDs are more prone to developing issues with body-image, self-esteem and body attitudes, with mood fluctuations, interpersonal and affective problems in long run (possibly due to subsequent weight gain and getting back on the cycle of VLCDs), than those on balanced diets. I don't think it is safe at all.

You're lucky you have such ready access to a GP.

My gp is amazing. But I have a lot of physical and mh problems so I see him very regularly.

What is the plan OP? I’m interested in trying it!

Exactly this my cholesterol is normal now and it's only been 2 months. It was either this or I had to start taking statins

My sister died from fatty liver cancer recently because the high cholesterol damaged her liver. She was only 59. People should be looking after their health better!

It wouldn't be for me, but congratulations on finding something that works for you and also sticking to it. I'd be a bit concerned if you were doing it on your own, but if you're getting support and also GP is monitoring you, then that's a positive.

Are there any recommendations for when you come to the end of the course and need to transition to eating food again?

Thankyou and yes when you finish the 12 weeks you go onto something called switch which is all about calorie counting and making better food choices. This is the main reason I picked this one as your supported afterwards to.

I’m surprised you’ve only lost 2 stone in 2 months if you’re eating only 650 calories a day. Should be a lot more lost unless you don’t have much to lose. Sounds like you’re eating more than 650 (as you should)

For context, I’m 5 foot 2, no exercise, 1200 a day and have lost 2 stone in 2 months (but I have a lot to lose)

Depends how much you have to lose, definitely.

I did Very Fast 800 and lost 1.5 stone in 8 weeks, with only that and maybe only half a stone more to lose.

I did put it back on again though very quickly. You definitely need a maintenance plan, as the OP has.

With me it coincided with early 2021 - was a good lockdown diet, but as soon as things opening up again I went a bit mad. I couldn't do it with my normal life, I'm too busy and also do a lot of exercise which I don't want to stop.

What is this " support" have you attempted to access yet?

What is it, chat bots? Do you get to access actual medical/official support or is it just someone at the end of an email but you have no idea who they are and what knowledge they hold?

The face book support group? I'm in a health and fitness group and it ranges from all sorts of crazy and contradictory information, lots of encouragement of what is sometimes Imo at least , of less than safe or sensible things. And general chit chat and encouragement and support of achievements.

What form does this support take

SecretSoul · 11/07/2024 14:28

Apparently it is actual food….

I thought it was a shake or something but browsing through the website the OP quoted, it is an actual “brownie” that you eat….

I'm sorry for your loss. Having high cholesterol is what scared me into doing this.

Yeah it's actual food but it's not like an actual brownie you would just buy from a shop I don't think I explained it well🙈

Agree, every last person I know who has done a VLCD has ended up with gallstone issues and gall bladder removal.

My questions:

Why are you wasting your calories on empty treats like crisps and brownies, when you are consuming so few? Surely you would be far better to eat those calories with something nutritious?

Are you not horribly constipated?

every last person I know who has done a VLCD has ended up with gallstone issues and gall bladder removal...

How many? Bit of a bold statement.

It can be whatever you want whether that's emails, phonecalls or asking for help and advise on the Facebook groups. The Cambridge 1:1 diet Is similar and I think you get more 1 on 1 advise but that one was out of my budget.

If you look at some of the ingredients lists there is very little actual food in there! Mostly chemically made stuff.

Well done OP. All these posts saying it’s not healthy. Neither is being overweight and having dangerously high BP and diabetes. It sounds like a good way to kick start the diet. You do adapt also. I’m on a regular diet and 2.5wks in my hunger has reduced considerably

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 11/07/2024 14:33

My sister developed gallstones after doing the Lighter Life diet, they were very painful and kept recurring so that she ended up having her gallbladder removed.

MrHarleyQuin · 11/07/2024 14:33

Being very overweight is a gallstones risk, also for many other things, so swings and roundabouts.

VF 800 is definitely real food and I tried to get the best nutritional balance possible for the calories (which is more like 1,000, all told).

Laura36TTC · 11/07/2024 14:34

Why did you decide to go down this route to lose weight?

Changemynameforumpteenthtime · 11/07/2024 14:34

combinationpadlock · 11/07/2024 13:41

you clearly don't understand about epigenetics. The eggs you are carrying will be affected by the experiences in your life time SPECIFICALLY FAMINE - which the OP is currently experiencing. Your endocrine system cannot tell the difference between a crash diet and a famine! Not only these eggs, but the eggs that some of these eggs will some day form, and their eggs, will all be affected.

Epigenetics is a way of adapting to the circumstances you are born in, it is a positive thing, but will have some negative consequences. As a result of experiencing famine, many genes in those eggs are being switched on and off, and the children born from them will be "famine adapted" - slower metabolism, increased hunger, etc.

It’s really not that simple.

There have been some studies that show obesity is more likely in people whose parents/ grandparents have been malnourished.

likewise, cases of anxiety higher in the descendants of holocaust survivors.

but that doesn’t mean you can point to one person ( who is overweight) going on a crash diet and say with any certainty their offspring will be more likely to be obese.

there are also going to be social factors at play too. If the person who experienced famine is the one who feeds you growing up, so you think they won’t have some kind of disordered view of food? That going to have an effect.

Laura36TTC · 11/07/2024 14:34

What’s a typical days food for you?

I think it sounds fine as it’s for a limited time and has been recommended by your GP, good luck OP, I hope it helps you have a healthier diet after.
