I’m an ‘overworker’ and have 3 FT jobs - AMA

Ive had a few people now mention on the careers topic to do an AMA so am taking the plunge.

An overworker is someone who holds multiple full time roles at the same time. Started in the US and became big during COVID - for obvious reasons as it’s pretty much impossible to do with non remote work.

I currently have 3 full time jobs, at my peak I had 5 during 2020. And am working towards buying a rental property with my additional income.

So for anyone who has wondered about it or are interested in trying it themselves - AMA

I don’t think it’s a problem for me

I know it would breach multiple of my employment contracts. Hence why I don’t tell them. Pretty simple to understand

If they haven’t found out for 4 years I think I can give it a few more and make some extra!

I know it would breach multiple of my employment contracts

Do you mean that you working for someone else, while company A is paying for your time would be a breach of your contract, but would not be stealing, I disagree that you could possibly be working 3 jobs at the same time while meeting your expected targets

People like you destroy trust in homeworking.

That steals from people at me who have disabilities and are only able to work if we can work from home.

Ah well

Overworking is very popular in the UK and for good reason. I am just one of thousands doing the same thing

Just going along with you for a moment.

It's not 'overworking'. It's actually 'underworking. It's fraud.

Yes, any decent organisation (in real life) will obviously know their employee is not fully available to them, if they are only working 1 - 2 hours a day.

In a low-level role, where the output is less significant, I could see it working across two roles, in the short-term, though not for the hours OP says.

wpuleeeeto · 05/04/2024 13:19

Then I’m glad I don’t work for the civil service

It's based on employment law so likely won't even any different for you, fraud is fraud, you are breaching your contracts.

You don’t seem to understand the definition of the term stealing.

Ah well

reporting as clearly you are only posting to be goady -

@SallyGs

I do indeed know what a 'dummy' Teams meeting is.

I also know what a spoofer is. 😉

Its not me that is lacking in comprehension

ThreeFeetTall · 05/04/2024 13:20

I've heard of this in the USA but I thought our tax system made it impossible (unless self employed). Are you PAYE in all of the roles?

jimjamjames · 05/04/2024 13:21

All these jealous fuckers just cos you've thought outside the box, OP Grin

justasking111 · 05/04/2024 13:21

So basically you have three clients paying you different amounts for your services.

@SallyGs I'm intrigued with your pension schemes, how do they work?

Do you use an accountant to fight your corner for you when HMRC mess up?

wpuleeeeto · 05/04/2024 13:22

You don’t seem to understand the definition of the term stealing.

And you don't seem to understand the definition (or severity) of fraud "wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain".

Dewdilly · 05/04/2024 13:23

i find this pretty disgusting, to be honest

Fizbosshoes · 05/04/2024 13:23

Is today a "work day?"
Is your toddler at nursery or napping at home? Do you look after them as well as your 3 jobs?

TimesChangeAgain · 05/04/2024 13:23

Every time I think I’d like a bit more money, I remind myself that a lot of people with more money get it by being a shitty person like the OP.

When you don’t care who you step on to get up in life, you’re left with no one to support you if the shit hits the fan. But of course you can’t see that it would ever be possible for something bad to happen to you. Ive known plenty of people like you. Happily they’ve mostly had shitty endings that they didn’t see coming.

YellowDaffodilRedTulip · 05/04/2024 13:24

I do the same but my salaries are a lot less and my position a lot less senior than OP.
I use to work in an office FT but always had long periods of doing nothing. I use to do online surveys to make a bit of money.
Since Covid we moved to WFH 4days, and so I took on a second job (P/T but hours overlapped).

Yes it’s a breach of my contract, yes I could get fired if discovered. I’m less flippant that the OP as I acknowledge that. But I still do all the required work for both jobs to the best of my ability.

justasking111 · 05/04/2024 13:24

@SallyGs why don't you go self employed with these companies. You'd be paying corporation tax which is lower and could claim back so much?

user8800 · 05/04/2024 13:25

This ^ is everything that is wrong with the new wfh culture

You aren't doing 3 x ft jobs

You're doing 6 hours a day over 3 roles, which isn't ft hours

I imagine the end customers/users aren't too happy with the service from these companies, but hey, not your problem!

You'll get found out eventually and let go 🤷‍♀️ you may even get sued depending on what your contracts state...

caringcarer · 05/04/2024 13:25

You sound like a dishonest con artist to.me. No wonder 2 of your roles fired you.

SuziQuinto · 05/04/2024 13:26

Three jobs, only 1-2 hours a day, highly paid marketing work - do you have a side hustle like Etsy or cake baking, or does your toddler take up the rest of your time?

CallMikeBanning · 05/04/2024 13:27

You are not an overworker if you are working 1-2 hours a day for each of 3 jobs. You are part time.

Edited

I can see how you could do that. How many hours a week do you work?.

SlurpSlooChortle · 05/04/2024 13:27

DH has said the same a few times. I’d be concerned about the security loss on my primary role though tbh.

I did freelance years ago and had to stop when companies started taking the Micky with payment terms.

I have a role review in early 2025 for my primary role (as they’ve put me on a projection pathway for career advancement) so might address it then as I would have more cards in my deck at that point. They might then agree to me working at other companies on a freelance basis

This.

tax on nearly 200k must be huge. Far more efficient to contract.
