I’m an ‘overworker’ and have 3 FT jobs - AMA

SallyGs · 05/04/2024 12:39

Ive had a few people now mention on the careers topic to do an AMA so am taking the plunge.

An overworker is someone who holds multiple full time roles at the same time. Started in the US and became big during COVID - for obvious reasons as it’s pretty much impossible to do with non remote work.

I currently have 3 full time jobs, at my peak I had 5 during 2020. And am working towards buying a rental property with my additional income.

So for anyone who has wondered about it or are interested in trying it themselves - AMA

Don’t your employment contacts have clauses not to have any competing interests? Don’t you worry you’ll lose all three jobs if they find out and not get a reference?. Are you not on Linked in/ company websites?

SallyGs · 05/04/2024 13:05

PinkertonRab · 05/04/2024 12:56

How did you get the secondary jobs without providing a reference from your main role? Or did you?

I gave excuses to both and they accepted them!

Both were happy to be getting someone with a lot more experience than they’d typically be able to pay for at a cheaper rate!

I earn over £120,000 a year in my primary position so they get a bargain offering £40k and £32k respectively

This sounds like fraud to me.

RoseyLentil · 05/04/2024 13:05

I couldn't do this in my industry as it's too small. Everyone knows who I am and I'd be rumbled pretty fast🤣

EarringsandLipstick · 05/04/2024 13:05

I hit my objectives, each company is very happy with my work. Everyone wins

Again, if this is true, that's not accurate.

Working in a f/t role requires being fully available, for a call, further work etc. You are prioritising certain tasks & then using your primary company's time to work for others.

I can't imagine any half-decent firm would not realise this is happening & I simply don't believe the figures / time adds up.

newfriend05 · 05/04/2024 13:06

This isn't going to end well on here or in real life OP ... you sound too arrogant and will slip up

EarringsandLipstick · 05/04/2024 13:06

and all three laptops are in dummy teams meetings

Ah ok! Too far OP, but nice try.

Two have clauses about declaring outside work. I just don’t declare them

I’ve got my two secondary roles without actually needing a reference from my current company so that part also isn’t too concerning

Are you on LinkedIn, OP? Everyone I know in Marketing uses it constantly.

I am, and list my primary company on there. No one at my secondaries have questioned it - if they did I’d just say I’m not active on updating it

Eh if you think one of the largest consumer goods companies is a bad business that’s on you Grin

No, it's on them. Basic maths plus business sense would tell you that it's a waste of money.
I'm surprised that you can't see that.

SallyGs · 05/04/2024 13:08

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 05/04/2024 12:59

Isn’t this fraudulent? You’re lying to your employers?

Lying about what?

Of course, I’m Mumsnetting whilst my toddler naps on me and all three laptops are in dummy teams meetings Grin

🤔

SallyGs · 05/04/2024 12:52

The salaries are, working hours no

I work about 1-2 hours for each every day, but still get paid for my full working weeks

This us why people are being called back into the office.
No, I don't think people really need advice on how to thieve, because thar is what you are- a thief.

Coshei · 05/04/2024 13:08

So you are a director in your primary role earning over 120k despite having been fired from previous roles? 🤔

SallyGs · 05/04/2024 13:09

Coolblur · 05/04/2024 13:00

Well obviously you aren't/weren't working FT hours in all 3/5 jobs, there aren't enough hours in the week to do that unless you don't sleep.

So my question is how many hours do you actually work in your PT jobs for which you get paid FT wages?

I work about 2 hours a day in my primary role, 1-2 a day for my secondaries

I do go into the office to connect with my dept for my primary role though on top

This is an interesting world of no references, low accountability and minimal imput.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 05/04/2024 13:09

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 05/04/2024 12:45

How are 3-5 full time jobs possible? There are less hours in the week. 24 hours x 7 = 168

They don’t. They set up pc’s and work the room if you will.
IE Taking the piss! We had people do this during covid, working for our LA and also working elsewhere.

At least, I presume this is what OP means. Sorry not read the whole thread so apologies if you aren’t doing this OP- but it definitely goes on!

Minimal input but maximum output. Works for everyone really

Definitely not, I work a max of about 6-7 hours a day as I also have a young child, so make sure I can do her nursery pick up etc.

none of them know about the other roles. It’s between me and HMRC Grin

Ah so you are basically self employed with 3 clients?

SuziQuinto · 05/04/2024 13:10

Looking after your toddler as well, and mumsnetting!

bryceQ · 05/04/2024 13:10

This is absolutely wild.

What kind of marketing do you do?

when I was a marketing director, it was absolutely back to back meetings all the time I was involved in every major decision, even if I didn't have to present in every meeting I had to be available and on all the time. And I say this is someone who was also incredibly efficient and went freelance for this reason, because I could earn more money doing multiple contracts at once .

I can't remotely see how this is feasible. What are your actual work duties? What kind of marketing I'm bamboozled

SallyGs · 05/04/2024 13:10

RoseyLentil · 05/04/2024 13:05

There are definitely industries this would never work! Thankfully I work across multiple sectors so never been rumbled yet!!

boozeclues · 05/04/2024 13:10

Are you not worried your primary employer will
find out, fire you and the impact that will have on your reputation in the industry?

wpuleeeeto · 05/04/2024 13:11

Whilst you're doing the work, if you're contracted to work full time hours and only working 1-2 a day then you are committing fraud surely? In the public sector we treat misuse of flexi as fraud and this seems similar to me.
