I’m an ‘overworker’ and have 3 FT jobs - AMA

SallyGs · 05/04/2024 12:39

Ive had a few people now mention on the careers topic to do an AMA so am taking the plunge.

An overworker is someone who holds multiple full time roles at the same time. Started in the US and became big during COVID - for obvious reasons as it’s pretty much impossible to do with non remote work.

I currently have 3 full time jobs, at my peak I had 5 during 2020. And am working towards buying a rental property with my additional income.

So for anyone who has wondered about it or are interested in trying it themselves - AMA

This us why people are being called back into the office.
No, I don't think people really need advice on how to thieve, because thar is what you are- a thief.

Oh you are foolish if you don’t think this happens while employees are in the office. I know two people who studied for their law exams in the office while working in the office. Another who studied psychology while working in the office and got promoted and complimented on his work ethic and another who ran two self employed businesses while working full time in the office. He was always disappearing to the bathroom, going for coffee and on his personal phone. However he was good at what he did.

I think this is a brilliant idea and I'm confused why others are so cross. Many jobs don't take the requisite 40 hours, as plenty of people exploited during COVID, and they used the extra time for house work or exercising. This is just a cleverer way of using your time to the fullest.

If the OP was doing an admin job in the day but needed extra cash and did a Deliveroo job in the evening would everyone be upset?

If none of the companies involved think she is performing badly then who loses?

MuchasSmoochas · 05/04/2024 13:29

Am fascinated by this OP and if true then good for you. Know a few people pulling off a double but not a treble! If your employers are happy then why not? They are the ones that matter, not Mumsnet people.

JeysusH · 05/04/2024 13:29

Hmm, I know people who have done this. I actually have no objection as far as the companies are concerned, they're happy that targets are being achieved and are getting what they paid for.

What I do find morally objectionable is that it's a tough job market out there right now, and you are depriving two junior people in your industry of work. I find that pretty low behaviour.

You sound like a dishonest con artist to.me. No wonder 2 of your roles fired you.

I chose to be fired, did you not understand that point? Meant I got a few more months of pay instead of handing my notice in myself Grin

many on MN seem to not understand how some workplaces operate, it’s baffling tbh

Ive never worked anywhere that I’ve done my full weekly hours since starting my career at 18!

So, if this is real, you basically have three easy undersupervised jobs.

Not three full time jobs.

Mamoun · 05/04/2024 13:31

I know who you are.

It's marketing!

Rufilla · 05/04/2024 13:32

This ^ is everything that is wrong with the new wfh culture

And this is exactly why I think this is another stealth anti-wfh thread. Along with ‘I spend all day at the gym or shops and just log on for the odd meeting’.

I don’t believe this thread and I don’t believe those either.

(Not that there aren’t people doing what they shouldn’t be - and I’ve observed office colleagues working on side hustles in work time - what I don’t believe are the extreme examples and implication it’s rife. It really isn’t.)

SuziQuinto · 05/04/2024 13:32

I'm going to save this thread and link it to any future wfh or teacher holiday criticisms threads!
Brilliant!

Candleabra · 05/04/2024 13:33

This is fraud. I know someone who was sacked for doing exactly the same thing you’re doing. Then effectively black listed within our industry as they were “working” for three different companies. You’ll get found out eventually and then you’ll be in a whole world of trouble.

TimeandMotion · 05/04/2024 13:33

Do you manage any people in any of these roles?

SallyGs · 05/04/2024 13:34

justasking111 · 05/04/2024 13:21

So basically you have three clients paying you different amounts for your services.

@SallyGs I'm intrigued with your pension schemes, how do they work?

Do you use an accountant to fight your corner for you when HMRC mess up?

Edited

No accountant, just hours on the phone with HMRC each time! Up there with the worst people to talk to on the phone!

two of the three use the same pension provider so once I end things then I’ll just merge them. My primary has it’s own pension company so can’t do anything with that one

Do you charge for your crystal ball services?

I’ve never had a supervised job, so yes I guess so.

This is an interesting world of no references, low accountability and minimal imput.

One might even suspect it wasn't true ;)

It sounds exhausting - the deception and lies, not the hours worked. Your co-workers will be onto you even if your bosses aren't. They'll remember. Still by then, you'll be retired on a beach somewhere.

You can suspect all you like

Just makes me laugh all the envy in this thread from people so hurt they must tell themselves it’s not true - a bit pathetic really

This is fraud, and you are a thief OP. Worse still, you seem proud of it all, even openly admitting that you are not declaring what you should be, or working the hours agreed.

Well exactly, I don’t imagine this will last forever, just for long enough to make some extra money so we can start enjoying it
