I’m an ‘overworker’ and have 3 FT jobs - AMA

SallyGs · 05/04/2024 12:39

Ive had a few people now mention on the careers topic to do an AMA so am taking the plunge.

An overworker is someone who holds multiple full time roles at the same time. Started in the US and became big during COVID - for obvious reasons as it’s pretty much impossible to do with non remote work.

I currently have 3 full time jobs, at my peak I had 5 during 2020. And am working towards buying a rental property with my additional income.

So for anyone who has wondered about it or are interested in trying it themselves - AMA

This us why people are being called back into the office.
No, I don't think people really need advice on how to thieve, because thar is what you are- a thief.

What am I stealing?

My objectives are met, I’m excelling in each role, and I get more money

Everyone wins except DH who moans about the electricity costs!

Lying about what?

Whether you are doing the work or not, you are claiming to be working for them, and you are not

You can dress it up how you like, but you are lying and you are cheating all of them

Its disgusting what you're doing

SallyGs · 05/04/2024 13:12

EarringsandLipstick · 05/04/2024 13:05

I hit my objectives, each company is very happy with my work. Everyone wins

Again, if this is true, that's not accurate.

Working in a f/t role requires being fully available, for a call, further work etc. You are prioritising certain tasks & then using your primary company's time to work for others.

I can't imagine any half-decent firm would not realise this is happening & I simply don't believe the figures / time adds up.

Then your imagination is very limited

Overworking is very popular in the UK and for good reason. I am just one of thousands doing the same thing

People like you destroy trust in homeworking.

That steals from people at me who have disabilities and are only able to work if we can work from home.

This isn't going to end well on here or in real life OP ... you sound too arrogant and will slip up

Eh I’ve been managing just fine for over 4 years, think I’ll be fine for a few more.

I am also only posting to answer questions, I don’t actually care what people’s views are on it.

OP posts:
SuziQuinto · 05/04/2024 13:13

So, you're not an "overworker", you're in three jobs which all seem pretty low impact/light touch.

SallyGs · 05/04/2024 13:14

EarringsandLipstick · 05/04/2024 13:06

and all three laptops are in dummy teams meetings

Ah ok! Too far OP, but nice try.

Do you not know what a dummy teams meeting is, you set up a call with just yourself, then just dial into it whenever you need. My primary laptop is in a call from November 2nd 2023 Grin

keeps you looking online for as long as you need

If you don’t think it’s a problem then why don’t you tell them?
how are you going to feel when they inevitably find out and you lose your jobs?

There are thousands of shoplifters too. That doesn't mean it's ok.

I just reported someone to their regulatory body this week for doing this.

The term is overworking.

I'm interested in your definition of "overworking"? I assumed that you worked long hours but obviously not, or that it was very intense and demanding, again, obviously not.
I know nothing about marketing, bit I'm surprised.

I don’t think it’s a problem for me

I know it would breach multiple of my employment contracts. Hence why I don’t tell them. Pretty simple to understand

If they haven’t found out for 4 years I think I can give it a few more and make some extra!

I work about 2 hours a day in my primary role, 1-2 a day for my secondaries

I do go into the office to connect with my dept for my primary role though on top

This is not going to end well for you.
Please do come and update us with a “I got sacked from all my jobs for fraud and am now homeless AMA”

Then why not tell them you are doing this seeing as you are so sure they will be ok with it?

I had someone who worked for me around another job but she was upfront and honest and her calendar was clear who she was working for and when

If you aren't doing this then you know it isn't ok

wpuleeeeto · 05/04/2024 13:16

What am I stealing?

If your contract is objective based then nothing, but if your contract is like most people's and based on hours worked you are defrauding your employers of your time. They are paying for you c36 hours work, not X, Y, and X objective (unless your contract states differently).

You could be taking on more work, or the employer could reduce the contracted hours of the role to save money, you would be put on a fraud register for this in the civil service and dismissed for gross misconduct.

It’s not my definition

The practice is called overworking

i don’t have or need a definition for it, there is a standard one which I have given in my original post

You used the term "overworker" in your thread title. Literally.

Then I’m glad I don’t work for the civil service

in more ways than one

I'm asking for clarity on the definition, but I think you've answered all my queries now.

titchy · 05/04/2024 13:18

I guess an AMA titled 'I'm cheating 3 employers out of £££ and breaking their terms and conditions of employment' doesn't sound quite as impressive as being an 'over-worker' - which you're obviously not.

You just haven't been caught yet. Let's hope you don't, and if you do that you're not in an industry where recommendations count. Cos no one will employ you if so.

wouldn’t be homeless as I’ve been able to pay off my mortgage by 31…and it’s worked well for the past 4 years. A few more won’t hurt.
