AMA Income over £500k

AMAIncomeRelated · 03/03/2024 11:39

Following the thread on the disadvantages of earning just over £50k, it got me thinking that if some people think that is a huge amount to earn, what do they think of my life.

We live in North London. Husband earns a lot, over £500k most years. We live in a big house, with a huge mortgage, 3 children at private school, 3 dogs, own a ski chalet which is let out as well as for our use. I don't work, I did try a part time job 5 years ago and whilst I loved it, it cause too much stress at home because my husband is used to me doing everything.

We obviously live very comfortably, but also there are lots of things we'd like to do but can't afford the big projects at the moment. My husbands job is very stressful.

AMA. I am absolutely not gloating, I know only too well how fortunate we are.

Personally I find it really interesting to hear from people with different incomes. Not everyone is jealous of someone with money and I like to see it as something we can all achieve if we really want to. Lots of people don’t want to consider being wealthy as they love the poor me complex they portray instead.

The LTA is being removed. Surely anyone at that level would know?

This is such a brag post.

No, I am not jealous. I have a very high income but wouldn’t dream of doing this. Doubly so if I was bragging about my husband earning, not me.

LTA is being abolished in April 2024, there are still charges before this, the OP and her husband can start paying into them again from May 2024.

@AMAIncomeRelated Similar household income and a sahm in London, so I'm finding this interesting, thank you for posting it!

Which tube zone do you live in?
What are your favourite places to take the dcs in London?
Do you use public transport?
What extracurriculars do your dcs do? Do you ferry them around or are they all done in school?

MsCactus · 03/03/2024 19:13

I wish we saw more posts like this from women who earn £500k+

My DH is in a well paid industry and his boss (female) took home £800k+ last year. I'm fascinated by how she's achieved that with a family etc etc.

I'm afraid it's not super interesting to hear about another rich man with a sahm wife. There's plenty about, and as a pp said it's not that different to you being a sahm with a DH on £80k or something in terms of lifestyle.

Women dealing with sexism, pregnancies, mat leaves and still earn that amount themselves is worth an AMA imo, this isn't

Let me quote myself “is being removed”. That’s clear that it will be happening. Do read properly.

No need for the “explanation” as this is part of what I do, hence mentioning it.

And as she has no income, she can’t pay in much at all.

Well no one asked you to comment on it 🙄. If you don't find it interesting just scroll on by.

I was genuinely in a panic that the Lawn Tennis Association was being abolished 😁

Seriously?

I don't think you have a clue how people are brought up in some areas and how bloody hard it is to break cycles of poverty

I imagine you are not from that kind of back ground to say this

ItRainsItPours · 03/03/2024 19:17

@MsCactus there was a female director at an old job of mine, she had a stay at home husband who apparently took care of everything. This was late 90s so not common but it can work that way round. I image there are plenty of men who would be happy to give up their jobs if their wives earnt that amount.

Agree, being married to a rich man isn’t in itself an achievement. I’d like to read more women posting about successful well paid career and the demands and practicalities of that

You have no idea what the OP donates to charity.

Why don’t you donate part of your earnings to charity, that would be a lovely idea.

Read the thread. She was asked if she donates, she said she volunteers.

and of course I’m not so hypocritical as to ask if others would consider donating if I don’t do it myself! I very much do (and have nowhere near the same liquid cash). In fact, assuming OP earns £1k a month from her rental property, then as a proportion of her husband’s (separate and additional) take home earnings, she’d be donating the same proportion of family income that I do.

Of course people earn money like this. Just not most people.

I know someone very well as a friend and was a close work colleague for years with a high income (probably around 250k) but due to inheritance and being landed gentry their assets ownership is eye watering. Possibly into a billion. But they've had cancer and lost a child in an accident. Another child is seriously mentally ill. They'd give it all up to reverse these things.

P*ss off - always one @hole who knows someone who has money but would give it all up. ffs.

I have a friend who is married to a man who earns ££££££££££££. They have a very luxurious life. Lots of holidays, nice house, nice cars. She has never worked.

she is utterly miserable in her life. No amount of luxury holidays, personal trainer or expensive jewellery can erode her feeling of utter low self worth due to feeling like she has no purpose outside of making her husband comfortable and happy.

I wouldn’t swap her my life for hers, even on my most stressful weeks at work. The self esteem I hold from feeling like I contribute to our life is immeasurable

But you can contribute to a shared life without working. Your friend chooses not to. Im
a SAHM to a high earning husband and have spent the last two years retraining extensively in a new skill so that I can offer that skill on a voluntary basis. I am incredibly busy, but yes I also have quite a pleasant life. If your friend really does nothing except float around gking on nice holidays I’m not surprised she’s depressed

Poor you. There are ways to break the cycle. Everyone has access to an education in this country, isn’t that a wonderful thing! Don’t assume my background either.

ok, monthly income around £14k, mortgage £6k, school fees £5k. Then annual bonus on top which varies.

Well, your outgoings sound very high relative to income. Aren’t you stressed? Did you grow up in wealthy families?

I find my friends whose parents were not well off, but are themselves well off tend to be more risk averse when it comes to their own income vs spending , as am I!

We made the decision that whoever was going to make the most money, would be the one to support the other.

I was the main earner for a while, my husband started to take off, and it became very apparent that he would be earning multiple times what I ever could.

That meant I reduced my hours, and did all the school runs, and everything around the house, we now have cleaners, gardeners etc.

If I was the one that had the earning power of my husband, he would have done what I did.

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/03/2024 19:24

How many times per day do you think "Wow we're so wealthy!!"

What made you think people on Mumsnet would be interested in an AMA?

I cannot see what useful insights are in spending someone else money

There are only 2 correct answers to this question anyway whatever you earn - Heinz or Branston.

There’s only one correct answer: none. Work of the devil those baked beans
