I have a 2 year old who goes to bed late and stays asleep until 10:30am or later

I have a 2 year old who usually wakes up between 10:30-11:30 and goes to bed anytime between 11-12:30. He will occasionally go to sleep between 7pm-9pm if he’s really tired/been woken up early and not napped. There are also days where he will be awake until 1/2am if he’s napped late.

Does he go to nursery? Or toddler groups?

When do you go to bed? Do you get any time to yourself?

My 5 and 3yo go to bed between 6 and 7 so this is wild to me! 😂 (but we’re all early risers so it makes sense)

Why do you let him stay up so late? Do you all just sleep your morning away or do you still get up earlier?

RainbowZebraWarrior · 13/01/2024 22:21

Wtf?

He doesn’t go to nursery but we do go to toddler classes and stay and plays Monday-Friday and he is never impressed when he is woken up for one and if it is too early for him he will just go back to sleep in the car/pram until we get there 😅

When I go to bed depends on what dp is doing/if he’s working the next day as we listen to an audiobook in bed together but it is usually some time between 11pm-1am but I often fall asleep on the sofa if we’re downstairs watching something 🤷‍♀️😂

Is it a struggle to get them to sleep or are they naturally ready for bed at that time?

Good luck when he has to go to school.

Because he’s not tired and you can’t force someone to sleep if they’re not tired 🤷‍♀️ We have tried getting him to go to bed earlier but he will just lay there awake or fight to get up as he’s not tired 🤷‍♀️ He’s been like this since he was born!!

Dp is a late riser too and will stay in bed with him if he’s not working but I usually wake up around 9/9:30

Good luck when he has to go to school.

We’ve asked the health visitor and children centre staff about it and they’ve said that he will grow out of it by then 🤔

He has a little friend who is the exact same!!

Fuck that.

He’s not tired because he doesn’t get up until 10.30 🤨 Get him up and get him out and about and busy doing activities!

CafeNervosa · 13/01/2024 22:27

Our daughter was the same. She’s still fairly late to bed 9.30pm and wakes at 8am for school. The school routine shifts it all earlier - I wouldn’t stress about it. I’m not sure if it’s a body clock thing, or just that her mind is busy that it stops her sleeping earlier. I have another daughter who likes to sleep from 7pm until 7.30am. They’re all different. It’s only a problem if it’s a problem for you.

SkaneTos · 13/01/2024 22:29

Wake him up earlier.

It doesn’t work 😂 he does 3 different toddler classes totalling 5 a week as well as 2 different stay and plays plus soft play, parks, swimming and play dates!! If we get him up at say 8 and he has a nap at 2pm he will still be wide awake later 🤷‍♀️

How long does he nap for?

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 13/01/2024 22:33

My son is only 7 months old but is the same at the moment. We can never get him to go to sleep before midnight apart from short naps (we have tried) but then he usually sleeps until around 11am. He sleeps quite well for a baby but it’s like his body clock is a bit off. I’m not really a morning person myself so it’s not a massive issue at the moment. I am hoping to break the habit before he’s in school though.

So cut out the nap?

xyzandabc · 13/01/2024 22:33

Do you need him to be awake earlier? Or are you happy with they way sleep works for your family. Your OP doesn't have a question so I'm not sure if your asking something or just telling us that in your household you all go to bed late and therefore wake up late.

It looks like you're all getting enough sleep it's just that your house is shifted a few hours later than what's deemed as 'normal' here. If it works for all of you that's fine.

You will need to adjust times when he goes to school though. But then he'll be exhausted by 5pm so shouldn't take too much to get him to sleep earlier. Until then, do whatever suits you all.

mamma65432 · 13/01/2024 22:34

school will be flipping painful if you don't get him into an earlier routine

Rowen32 · 13/01/2024 22:37

One of my children is like this, body clock about two hours later than 'normal'.. Am interested to see if they'll grow out of it but like that, been the same since newborn..

Comedycook · 13/01/2024 22:37

Honestly...I'd get him out that habit. I'd start getting him up earlier every day and like a pp said, I'd be giving him a busy day with lots of activities and exercise. He will soon start to feel tired earlier

SleepingStandingUp · 13/01/2024 22:39

I mean it sounds like you're happy with things the way you are so not sure what you want from the thread.

At 2 mine were up for older bros school run so 7.30ish, they'd nap on the school run so 3ish but they'd still be sent up to bed at a reasonable hour. Hands , face and teeth. Bedtime story. Sit with them until they're asleep.

But if you don't work and they're not in school so what works for you.

When does he start nursery?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/01/2024 22:39

I had one of these.

Even as a tiny baby she’d be awake until midnight and sleep late.
It adjusted slightly when she started school, but she was always a hassle to get down, and slept late at the weekends.
Now she’s a teen it’s 2.00 am to late given the choice x

Her liveliest time of day is always about 8-9 pm. Akways has been. Bloody nightmare.

She also resisted naps, and instead would sleep for about 14 hours at night.

SleepingStandingUp · 13/01/2024 22:40

Just packed this is ask me anything.

What do you think people are likely to ask beyond, why?

Quornflakegirl · 13/01/2024 22:40

If he’s up and ready for the day from 7:30 and not napping he will be be tired and ready for bed before 8pm.

I guess you can only understand this if you’ve experienced it for yourself!!
When he starts school and can’t just nap whenever I’m sure it’ll all sort itself out 😁
