Following on from our epic first thread I had a breast reduction

We are a group of ladies who have breast reductions for a number of reasons and are all at different stages of recovery.

I had a breast reduction AMA | Mumsnet

I had a breast reduction two weeks ago. I’ve gone from a 34GG/H to a 34D. Crack on with any questions!

Quick question, where did you buy bras from? I’m coming up to the magic 6 week mark and want to be out of the post surgery bras. I ordered some from next in the size I’m measuring but they were all too small 🤦‍♀️ so I’m thinking I maybe need sports bras for now? Would be so grateful for recs!

Martinisarebetterdirty · 07/11/2023 22:29

M and S body collection bras are nice and soft. And I’ve copied @Singletrackmind and ordered a couple of post surgery ones from Asda.

You’re getting ahead of yourself. It takes several months to be a normal cup size.

LilyGlobe · 08/11/2023 22:12

I know it takes months, but how do I know what size bra to order in the meantime? 😄

Singletrackmind · 09/11/2023 07:50

@LilyGlobe what @Madagascary said … I’m at 14 weeks ish & haven’t bought anything ‘sized’ and am not bothering yet. Plenty of soft/ crop top type bras in S/M/L that will work 👍

LilyGlobe · 10/11/2023 23:26

Ok so I ordered some bralettes from lounge and they’re amazing. I’m in a small! I cried happy tears.

Heartfullofcheese · 11/11/2023 00:34

That’s lovely!
I’m not over the joy of the little scrappy bras. It’s amazing.

Singletrackmind · 11/11/2023 08:49

Amazing! You must nearly be at boobiversary too @Madagascary - can’t believe it’s nearly a year for you!

DeliahSampson · 13/11/2023 17:39

Imnotthatkindofmum - In answer to your earlier question we have the number for a surgeon who has apparently performed reduction on a child of 16 and described it as 'life changing'.
My daughter is 16 (28HH). She has low/healthy BMI so weight loss unlikely to have much impact (and she struggled with and eating disorder last year I think partly triggered by her sudden puberty 😳) She's really keen to explore surgery (struggles psychologically, socially and physically with having big boobs from unwanted attention to difficulties buying clothes to discomfort when she's doing sport to just the pain of feeling different from her peers) Personally I am thinking we wait until she was 18 at least (partly because the recovery time - I think it will be easier after her A levels, and also because she's still growing. She was 28GG when she was 14 but all growth since she was 12 so Puberty has been a lot to get her head around... plus being in COVID lock down didn't help....
I'm also concerned because there is no going back and I'm concerned that she needs to be able to cope with the psychological effect of the reduction as much as the physical effect.
I'm assuming if we go ahead it will have to be done privately as what research I have done implies that to qualify for NHS treatment is close to impossible (our private insurance doesn't cover it either 🙃)
Whatever we do planning to take investigations slowly but on DD insistence I have booked an initial consultation with the surgeon I mentioned (who was recommended by a 'medical' friend) I am hoping the consult it will help her to know the options for the future and knowing what a reduction involves and that it is an option in the future will help her navigate the challenges she definitely experiences in the short to medium term.🤞

(were in SW London and Surgeon is London based incase that's relevant)

I hope your daughter doing ok - I know I'm finding it tough to navigate as a parent.

Thanks for everyone sharing their personal experiences here - this thread is so helpful - not least because, short of clumsily accosting friends and acquaintances better endowed than me for advice, I was really struggling to hear real life experiences and opinions from people in the know.

Madagascary · 13/11/2023 19:32

Oh that’s kind. Yep 22nd it is. Told the ladies at the clinic about my operation and they were suitably impressed. Or they were just polite. Maybe that’s it

Madagascary · 13/11/2023 19:33

I wonder why you are bothered about the psychological effect of this on your daughter? She will bloody love it! I was back to work after two weeks and apart from exercising being bit tired would be a perfect thing to have done before a holiday

Singletrackmind · 13/11/2023 21:58

@Madagascary good news .. I’m glad I’ll have a full 2 years before the next one having coincidentally had my mammogram just a few weeks before surgery. Can’t believe it’s been nearly a year for you…. have we really been nattering on that long 😂
@DeliahSampson I’m aware I’ve been quite a cautious voice on very young women having this surgery. But, honestly there is so much of my younger life that would have been vastly better & freer without the crippling self consciousness and embarrassment of having huge boobs. There are some amazingly skilled surgeons out there, as a young, healthy person recovery will be but a blink in her lifetime.

Madagascary · 14/11/2023 06:33

Did anybody see the piece in the times at the weekend about? I think a young singer who has big boobs and all the comments were predictably all “you should be so pleased with these”, largely from men.

It might be a vain to think it but wouldn’t this thread have been a good documentary, I’d have watched it

user80 · 14/11/2023 13:19

Mine have been a literal weight around my neck since they sprung up in my early teens. They earned me no end of unwanted male attention, in many different forms, my whole adolescence and adult life. I never had the confidence to have the surgery (I used to say there was so much wrong with me, why polish a turd 😔) and I can’t change it now, but I’m so glad I’ve had it done now. If your daughter has the confidence and means to have it done, I hope she manages it @DeliahSampson Edited to add: what about considering the psychological effects of NOT having it done? I’m 100% sure they have been severe for me.

Ooh almost your boobiversary @Madagascary 🥳

Singletrackmind · 14/11/2023 20:53

@DeliahSampson @imnotthatkindofmum just to add … what fantastic parents you are to be researching & thinking about this for your girls. Very much what @user80 said. I never dared approach my Mum even though I researched the op as a 16 year old (pre internet 😬) Though it’s her genes that I inherited sadly when it came to boobage - she would never have been so understanding.
@Madagascary … can’t read that sadly without a sub … and of course we’d have been perfect docu material … props to @Bigtitsbetty 😁

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2023 15:48

My daughter also has the same problem. We absolutely said we would pay for her to have a reduction, but I wanted to make sure she was fully grown before we went ahead, and I think some girls don’t fully stop growing until they are 20 ish. Anyway, she is now 21, just graduated and we phoned a surgeon recommended to us from a Dr friend. We called in May, and she has only just had her first consultation, it took that long. Now booked in for early March. I can’t wait for her to get rid of the neck and back pain and feel normal. She is also very slim and not that tall.

Madagascary · 22/11/2023 07:44
