This is not directed at any MN poster in particular, and I'm genuinely not trying to be goady or mean - it's just a topic which has always puzzled me.
If you have ever started an AMA thread, what was your motivation?
I wouldn't start such a thread because I'm so boring, but even if I wasn't, and had a fantastic career/unusual lifestyle, etc, no way would I invite people on MN to grill me about it.
I can't get past the feeling that it seems like bragging and showing off - even a bit narcissistic.
Or is it just me?💁

I haven't ever started one because there's nothing sufficiently interesting about me to warrant it, but I often ask questions - there might be an element of showing off on some of them, but I think that's a fair trade as long as the OP does make a reasonable effort to answer people's questions.

I know! I often think ''so what'' or ''eugh'' or ''you're not the ambassador for all murderers though''.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 02/02/2023 18:03

You bumped this after less than thirty minutes? And you think AMA-people are attention seekers?

The worst one are the ones which are clearly meant to be brags but just aren't very interesting or worth bragging about. "I drive a BMW- AMA!" (made up example to avoid picking on anyone in particular).

J0y · 02/02/2023 18:04

A few stick in my mind though. There was a woman who said her partner was a heroin addict. She wasn't an addict herself. I found that bizarre and sad and she was in denial and didn't answer 90% of the questions even though she said ''ask me anything''. She answered nothing. I sometimes wonder if the thread made her think.

Flymetothetoon · 02/02/2023 18:07

I've only read one that was genuinely interesting and that was a fair while ago - the OP worked in a crematorium. I just scroll past\ hide them generally.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 02/02/2023 18:07

I think there's nothing wrong in starting, people maybe interested, and those who starts want to share, or wants to talk about it. You can ignore it if you are not interested.
The ones I don't like is the one the OP pick and choose which ones to answer, and avoid the one that might be difficult for them to answer. What's the point in starting a thread and do that.

@JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue

Sorry, one of my many faults is impatience..........but can you show me where I used the term "attention seekers" please?.........

Attention seeking and showing off are synonyms!?

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss

Yes, I thought you made a very pragmatic, measured point!
But as I've admitted to @JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue, I know my faults and I'm an impatient person, and was trying to encourage more replies.
Hope that's ok?

Certainly; I was just curious as to why you'd bumped so soon when the replies (mine) had already started coming in.

@DietCroak

Yes, I know exactly what you mean, and it was those AMAs that I was primarily thinking about.

OP posts:
Tescoland · 02/02/2023 18:23

A lot of them are meaningless. Like “I am human being with a torso, a head, four limbs and I breathe air AMA.

Eyesopenwideawake · 02/02/2023 18:24

I did one because I wanted people to understand what I do and how I do it, as there are a lot of misconceptions about hypnosis.

Went well, I thought 😊

@Truckinghell

Synonyms? Are they really? I had no idea!🙄
Can we not derail this thread please, and stick to my OP. I've 'fessed up to being impatient, but I started the thread because I find the AMA topic quite strange, and am genuinely interested in PPs opinions.
Thanks.

I'm not very au fait with the etiquette surrounding "bumping", so sorry.
And I've already explained that one of my many faults is impatience.

I found that one fascinating and also very comforting as someone who has seen both parents and a sibling cremated (not to mention wider family and friends). She seemed so kind and respectful.

There was also a very interesting one by a woman from the traveller community which blew a lot of myths out of the water.

But yes, some of them are ridiculous.

thebartenderatethethief · 02/02/2023 18:33

People are interested in people. A lot of the threads on here wouldn't exist otherwise. Nor would films or soap operas or most magazines.

I've done a few. Have always gone well. It may be 'showing off' in some cases/respect but it is also minimising misconceptions and allowing people to ask quadrions they may have always wanted to, but anonymously.

@J0y I remember that one. I think she was in denial too :( crack wasn't it? Just no awareness. I hope she's okay.

I don’t understand this thread. Are we supposed to ask you anything about your dislike of AMA?

SirenSays · 02/02/2023 18:36

I think it's far more puzzling that people go onto AMA threads with snotty comments like Why would I've ask you anything?

Yes, I agree - so frustrating and a waste of everyone's time.
