This is not directed at any MN poster in particular, and I'm genuinely not trying to be goady or mean - it's just a topic which has always puzzled me.
If you have ever started an AMA thread, what was your motivation?
I wouldn't start such a thread because I'm so boring, but even if I wasn't, and had a fantastic career/unusual lifestyle, etc, no way would I invite people on MN to grill me about it.
I can't get past the feeling that it seems like bragging and showing off - even a bit narcissistic.
Or is it just me?💁

I saw an AMA thread that sounded interesting so I put it in my watch list. People started asking interesting questions...and the poster never came back in the thread to answer anything 🙄

Hillrunning · 02/02/2023 19:55

Do you know how the AMA section started OP? A poster said they worked in a crematorium and would answer questions if people wanted. It was so well received that people wanted more similar style threads. And so mumsnet delivered. Of it a topic you are interested in, its a great conversation.

I posted on one that clearly no-one else thought was interesting because it was jsut me and the OP. But who cares? If nobody is interested the thread will die a death.

I wanted to start one titled, “I’m a fantasist, AMA”.

Never got round to it. Perhaps I should start one saying, “I’m a procrastinator.”

Do that. You could keep telling us you’d be back to answer our questions but then not do it.

QueenOfHiraeth · 02/02/2023 19:59

I don't see anything wrong in these, it's just another way of chatting and learning about others' lives. Surely the whole point of coming on a big site like this is to read the bits that interest you and scroll past the ones that don't rather than posting veiled criticism that might put someone off posting a thread that others might enjoy and learn from

Namechange828492 · 02/02/2023 20:00

I read the one by the person who worked for as a laundry detergent specialist. I think about that one all the time!

milkyaqua · 02/02/2023 20:19

What I find annoying/weird is that someone will start an AMA, answer two or three questions, then vanish. Leads me to think it is something that seems like a good idea when slightly pissed and then they wake up...

I have a read a couple of lengthy ones that were interesting, but many seem to not actually answer the most basic questions put to them and that seems unreasonable given they said AMA. I don't know why people do it.

@Hillrunning

So the AMA section was started by a PP who worked in a crematorium? And it grew a life of its own?
Now, you see, I never knew that!
And your post has gone a long way to educate me as to why people start AMA threads, which was the main aim of my OP.
Your post has been 100% more illuminating than some others who just want to have a go at me to suit their own agenda.
Thank you!

I agree totally.

@DarkNurseries it's not tall poppies syndrome. Most of the AMAs are like

''I'm a size 14 mid ranking civil servant in the midlands, AMA''

OP is parodying that aspect surely, not running down people who genuinely have a story to tell.

@xJoy

Thank you. You understand what I was getting at. Some PPs seem absolutely determined to cause conflict where none was intended.

@Truckinghell

Synonyms? Are they really? I had no idea!🙄
Can we not derail this thread please, and stick to my OP. I've 'fessed up to being impatient, but I started the thread because I find the AMA topic quite strange, and am genuinely interested in PPs opinions.
Thanks.

Well, it certainly seemed you had no idea when you demanded someone tell you where you said attention seekers when that was essentially the basis of your opening post 🤷🏼‍♀️

And it was you who made that derailing post.

Exhausting.

Circumferences · 02/02/2023 21:56

I started one because I used to work as a prostitute, and it plays on my mind often enough for me to consider it "part of my identity" but literally cannot talk to any single person about it in real life, which is slightly stifling.

I found it therapeutic, sorry 😂

There are loads of prostitute AMAs by the way. I won't link to mine it was a few years ago.

Circumferences · 02/02/2023 22:00

Reddit have had the AMA section since forever so MN have followed suit as there appeared to be demand for it.

HappyHealthy23 · 02/02/2023 22:07

Can anyone link to the crematorium thread? I'd like to read that.

Why apologise?
Your post is such an honest one, and, again, the kind of response which has helped to educate me.

I'm a mum, AMA 😂

I remember the Air BnB one, that was a good one.

Some definitely have an air of self importance and slight embellishment but you gotta take anything on MN with a pinch of salt anyway.

I find the ones about disabilities or medical conditions insightful, definitely a good way to raise awareness and highlight issues i'd never have thought of before.

It is annoying that on so many the Op never comes back.

LachrymoseLeeches · 02/02/2023 23:03

I did an 'I had a homebirth ama' after my baby was born, I thought it might be helpful for women considering having one to ask practical questions (rather than starting another debate about the rights and wrongs) . I think it went well but can't find it now.

I find them interesting but I'm very nosy about other people's lives.

@Truckinghell

I really can't be arsed with all this petty tit for tat nit-picking and bitchiness.
My OP was a genuine request for views, and I didn't "demand" anything.
Thanks for your valuable and helpful input.
Maybe, if you're exhausted, you need to go to bed.
Goodnight x
