What do you think of the persecution of ahmediyas. Could you marry more than one husband if your husband married another lady. Would you disown your own children if they left Islam or converted to another religion or even no religion. Can your children date ? Would you be allowed to have a dog but keep it in the home and not the garden shed. Is Mohamed the perfect man that all Muslims must emulate ? Did Mohammed not have one Jewish tribes men killed and then he married one of the women in that same tribe. would she really have wanted to marry the man who ordered the killing of her family? Are there any direct descents of mohammed alive today?

Aisha was not 6 nor 9!!!!! This is a myth and has been proved several times that she was much older either 14-15 or 18-19. Get your facts right.
In those days it was common for people to marry that age. I'd say the last 50-60 years ago people were still married around that age.
My grandma got married at age 12...coming from an Indian background.
Learn some history and learn some facts. Stop being so ignorant and spreading lies.

Are you muslim?

Mvslimah · 21/11/2022 17:51

It’s not a core tenant of Islam, it’s based on a hadith that there is reward in showering blessing on the prophet and I said it in my head. Allah knows my intention. But negating to say or think or write saws doesn’t take you out of the fold of Islam.

so goady

I wasn’t being goady, I’ve always been taught it is really really important 🤷‍♀️

I also think it’s disingenuous to equate polygamy with modern polyamorous relationships as you have in another comment. As with most religions I am not aware that a woman can have more than one husband in Islam. It always goes one way doesn’t it and it’s never in the woman’s favour.

I didn’t say they are the same more that different relationships work for different people. I know women who have actively wanted to be a Co wife, it’s not for me but each to their own

You can get Islamic and Jewish swimsuits :) or go to a woman’s only space if you dress modestly

And these extreme restrictions don’t bother you having lived a lifetime of freedom before you converted?

Eileen101 · 21/11/2022 18:18

Fascinating thread op, I don't have any questions (yet) but am reading with interest :) ignore the goading.

Actually I do have a question.
How soon did you go from being interested, to converting?
Did your husband's family happily accept you when you first met?

Byfleet · 21/11/2022 18:19

What is your education level?

@emptythelitterbox why did you ask OP this question and did you notice her answer, that she has two Masters degrees?

I am not a Muslim but I have lived an worked in Muslim communities in various countries most of my adult life. I find the level of ignorance among Britsih people really hard to take. Why, for example, is there an assumption that if a British woman converts to Islam she must be uneducated?

Did you know that in most developed Muslim countries female graduates outnumber males? Did you know that the first univeristy in the world was founded by a woman, in Morocco? Did you know that Mohammed's first wife, who is considered one of the first believers and a very important figure in Islam (Khadija) was older than him and was a successful businesswoman?

Some of the Muslim communities in the UK originate from less developed parts of the world where education for women has not become the norm. This is to do with culture and poverty. It is not something intrinsic to Islam.

I wish people would stop repeating prejudices about a religion and culture they know nothing about.

The word used for brothers and sisters were used for all cousins and relatives in a generation as people generally lived in extended family groups, or in villages close to each other. Jesus has male and female followers with him constantly which is mentioned in scripture, these were also referred to as brothers and sisters just as Christians do to this day as do Muslims when referring to those of the same belief and community.

Mary was a Virgin as foretold in scripture and which has been constant Christian tradition for two thousand years. We have many historical documents from the early Church (from the first century) which explain their beliefs and practices very clearly. In scripture itself Mary says “all generations will call me Blessed, and Holy is His name”. Jospeh and Mary were both devout Jews which is stated very clearly in scripture and would only have had sex within marriage. It’s possible that Joseph was married before but we have no evidence for that. Jewish tradition and practice would have meant a young, unmarried teen/woman would have been protected from men and the community would not have practiced sex outside marriage, just as is the case now in orthodox Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities. All have almost identical pre-marital sexual ethics.

Persecution of any minority is abhorrent and not Islam even if Muslims are doing it
no Muslim women can only marry one man
No I wouldn’t disown them but I’d be disappointed
yes all the prophets (blessings on all of them) are considered to be the best of humanity and examples for us all
yes that’s the story of saffiyah, but it’s something that the prophet saws didn’t take lightly, there are hadith of him crying to saffiyah and asking her for forgiveness and she recognises that he had no choice, like all of the wives she was given the choice to leave with no consequences but she chose to stay and after his death never re married
some people claim to be descended from the prophet saws not sure how much validity these claims hold

but after jesus’s death it was his brother that carried on his ministry and that’s what one of the only historical references to Jesus says

I’d say 18 months or thereabouts from discovery/ interest to conversion

some were, some weren’t, which is a shame

Most do, some are a bit prejudiced. I do feel different or that I stick out but it’s because I look visibly different to the majority I think

the mosque themselves will always welcome a new Muslim with open arms

How do you feel about halal meat ?

Maybeandfive · 21/11/2022 18:34

Mvslimah · 21/11/2022 17:13

Yeah I do.

i can’t lie it’s one of the things that were uncomfortable to me at first but it’s something that’s ‘urf (a custom of the people) and it’s very much a modern day thing to have criticised Muslims over. Virgin Mary is also believed to have been around 11 and she had previous children, there are numerous other examples and notably Christians and Jews of the time (who both used to regularly insult the prophet and look for ways to discredit Islam, never mentioned Aisha’s age). Ancient societies didn’t measure age as we do and rather used puberty to measure adulthood

the problem is when something that’s clearly very historical gets transposed to the present day with 0 context.

Do you not find this a real argument a real apologist one for paedophilia?
Throughout history girls have died as a result of internal injuries after rape (because that's what it is as a child that age cannot consent) due to these child 'marriages'.
You can't just hand wave this away as cultural relativism.
Some things are just about basic human rights.
Some things are just child abuse.
And what do you make of the passage in Qu'ran where one of the prophets wives is angry with him after she again finds him raping one of his female slaves (again, it is rape as a slave cannot consent) and Allah wades in on Muhammed's side and tells him that Muhammed does not need to deny himself what Allah has permitted to him?

What culture is that then? I wish people would stop coming on to a British based forum and making sweeping generalisations about how awful British people are. The UK is about as homogeneous a group as all the different cultures which make up Muslim majority countries for a start. The thread is called AMA, the clue is in the title. If OP wanted a warm cuddly thread about her religious beliefs there is a religion/philosophy board. The vast majority of ME and Northern African countries place limitations on women. More so than most other countries. These countries are majority Muslim. Should we ignore this massive coincidence? Whether these restrictions originally stem from religious doctrine or culture, they are intrinsically linked and religion is used as an excuse for these restrictions.

lotuspie · 21/11/2022 18:37

Why did Mohammed have no choice with saffiyah. Why not just let them live? After having all her family killed she'd have had no choice but to stay as where would she have gone? Not sure it's a good idea to put the label of perfect human on anyone

Runover · 21/11/2022 18:38

Which brother are you referring to? Because this is not accurate. No biological brother carried on his ministry, the disciples he chose to carry on his ministry were not related to him and were from a range of different backgrounds. All of those we know of were martyred and died for the faith as were many bishops, lay people and Popes for the first 300 years. We have a lot of historical records from the early Church.

Are you thinking of John the Baptist? He was related to Jesus through their mothers who were cousins. John was murdered (martyred) before the death of Jesus.
