I had a breast reduction two weeks ago. I’ve gone from a 34GG/H to a 34D.

Crack on with any questions!

If I PM you would you share where you got the consultation and operation done? It has been so interesting reading your experience. I have been wanting it done for 24 years.

i am desperate to have this done. I’m a 34F and have always hated my breasts. I gain absolutely no pleasure from them at all (hate having them touched) have always ‘leant over’ so as not to have them poking out’ too much (not that this actually makes any difference- they are still there for all to see) and I’m so bloody sick of looking matronly. Does not help that I am apple shaped. Bloody hate them!! The only thing preventing me from getting them done is the cost. £12k is very prohibitive and I can’t see my Vitality health care covering the cost. How long did you save up for?

£12k was the top end of quotes. I paid £7.5. It was easier to save up because we’d missed holidays due to covid.

I’m apple shaped too, and I always felt that I looked pregnant.

I'm having a reduction next year and I'm really nervous about the general anaesthetic. Generally about not waking up was the anaestist reassuring.

I also live alone with a 10 year old with no family close by. Do you think that this would be a massive issue?

Madagascary · 09/10/2022 08:47

I’m hoping for under 10k 😫😫

AngelsWithSilverWings · 09/10/2022 08:57

I wish there had been an AMA about this before I had my reduction. I was lucky to have a friend who had been through it so I bombarded her with questions!

I'm 6 years post op now and it's the best thing I've ever done for myself. I went from 32GG to 32D ( although they look smaller than that I think) and I'm still very happy indeed. The best thing is being able to buy dresses that actually fit and blouses that can button up. I have always been slim but my boobs made me look huge all over so I'm much happier being in proportion.

I still have scarring but it's fainter now and a price worth paying. They have not "grown back" which is something a lot of people thought would happen and they are still very perky.

I was 46 when I had my op and would have done it earlier had I not still had two primary school DC who needed driving around to after school activities. I waited until my eldest was in final year of primary and able to safely operate the microwave to cook for him and his younger sister and did it the week before the end of the school term.

I can’t offer any advice about the anaesthetic. I did get to speak to the anaesthetist before my surgery though.

You will need someone with you for 48 hours afterwards which is general post op stuff. I was ok by myself but you can’t lift anything so cooking/ironing will be out for a bit. You can’t lift your arms above your head for six weeks so I can’t hang washing out to dry. Washing your hair needs help and you won’t be able to drive for a few weeks.

If your 10 year old can help you’ll be ok but it is a lot to put on them. You will need someone for first couple of days.

I don’t really want to give specifics and recommend but…

I would advise speaking to as many surgeons as you can. Some are free some charge a consultation fee (£150ish). As soon as I met my surgeon I knew he was right for me.

I contacted the big companies (Mya, Harley Group etc) you can find by googling and by contacting my local private hospitals. One company wanted to charge me an extra £3k because my breast were so large. No shit Sherlock.

By contrast the local private hospital felt more modest and it was only a 7 mile drive home afterwards rather than 90 minutes from London. Important when a seatbelt goes over your brand new boobs.

I'm a 34G and I would love to have a reduction. I've struggled with back pain for years, as well as loathing the way I look.
I'm a couple of stone overweight - I'm 48 and peri-menopausal and finding it incredibly hard to lose weight. This may be a silly question but would I be told to try and lose weight before I could have the procedure?

Madagascary · 09/10/2022 10:59

Surely any surgery safer when not overweight.

also you don’t want the stomach/ boob ratio wrong afterwards!!

BaskingInTheSun · 09/10/2022 11:13

Those of you saying they 'cut your nipples off', that's not usually the case. Your nipples are likely to be moved, but it is normal for them to remain attached to your tissue and repositioned, not cut off.

Madagascary · 09/10/2022 11:35

Yes soz. Was being glib

AngelsWithSilverWings · 09/10/2022 11:59

Re finding a surgeon. I was lucky in that my friend's husband is an anaesthetist working at the local private hospital and he recommended a oet

AngelsWithSilverWings · 09/10/2022 12:04

Sorry - fat thumbs pressed send by mistake!

Friend's husband recommended a surgeon he had worked with many times because I he said her work was so neat and she was very caring.

I arranged a free mini consultation with her as she held a free clinic once a month.

As soon as I met her I knew she was the right person. She is retired now so I can't recommend but I'm so glad I chose her.

I paid £5.5 k ( 6 years ago ) and that included all the pre op consultations , after care and further surgery to tidy up the "dog ears" that sometimes appear under your armpits once the swelling has gone down. She even removed a mole on my face free of charge while doing my tidy up!

My surgeon would only operate if your BMI was under 30. He said to get to your ideal size before any surgery.

My BMI is 27+ but I felt comfortable a bit over weight because when I was smaller my boobs looked even bigger and more unnatural.

As @Madagascary says it’s better for the aesthetic and anaesthesic.

That’s what I meant. They don’t really get cut off but because the skin is refashion around them it looks like they have been.

I had a breast reduction too! From the same size to the same size lol!

AngelsWithSilverWings · 09/10/2022 20:55

@Madagascary ha ha! Dog Ears are just little flaps of loose skin that need tightening. Mine were under my armpits. They only really show once the swelling from the surgery has gone down. It was a very minor procedure with a local anaesthetic to get rid of them.

ShinglesThinBonesWhiskersBunions · 09/10/2022 21:09

What did you weigh before and after?

So you wish you had got it done sooner?

I was 11 and half stone before and after. It unfortunately didn’t make any difference to the scales. I look and feel about two stone lighter though!

I had over 2lb of breast tissue removed.

@Bigtitsbetty
Could I ask how long was it from the first consultation to the Op?
I have my first consult in a couple of weeks with the surgeon I want

I started looking at surgeons in April, but saw the one who did my op in late May. However I asked for it to be done in September because I had a holiday in August and I knew this time of year would be better for my recovery and time off work.

If you don't know anyone to give a recommendation, what sort of things should you be asking/looking for in a surgeon?
