Yes, Ken was friendly and really puts you at ease.

Got my 3 in 10 with Mike and The Mechanics.

I gotta year spot on. 1997 - Elton John's Candle in the Wind gave it away.

When you listen to the other person, are you on mute? Or do you just have to be really quiet.

Do they read you any rules before hand about cheating etc. ?

No, I was on back in 2019. Sometimes they recycle the questions.

Ive only got as far as being a reserve (need to reapply). What struck me though is that the qualifying questions are quite hard - do you think (I do), that they occasionally let someone through who hasn't done very well in them? There is occasionally someone on who appears to know nothing at all about music. I once heard someone get not one single correct answer until Gary Davies (sitting in for Ken), basically told them the answer to the last question so that they wouldn't get zero! Also, did you find you could still remember stuff under the pressure of being on the radio? On the day I was reserve, if I'd been on and not thrown by the pressure, I would have won, because I knew all the answers!

Yes, you're on mute when the other contestant is on.

The only thing they tell you is not to swear!

I guess they have the timer on so that you don't have time to Google the answer.

I don't think so. It really depends on the questions they give you in the day. I qualifies twice before going through on my third attempt and you need at least 3/5 correct answers.

It was very nervewracking and I managed to do quire well but messed up the last question that I knew the answer to by blurting out the rival band!

There was an episode maybe a year ago where one contestant scored 3 after a bit of help but to avoid a tie breaker, Ken wouldn't give any hi to the second contestant so he scored 0.

How is it decided who goes 1st and 2nd? I have always thought that the second person has a slight advantage in choosing their bonus round (in that they recycle the non-chosen 1st person bonus round).

How the hell did you get the 3 in 10 - I couldn't name 3 hits from my favourite band in 10 seconds under pressure, let alon Mike and Mechanics (I could only name one hit from them if you gave me 10 minutes).

Basically - I am impressed - but how????

@lidolemon Not sure how they decide who goes first and who goes second. I went first and I had a choice of Light my Fire VS Cover versions. They chose Cover Versions, and I think I only got one out of 3 of their bonuses, but I got 2 out of 3 in mine. They got 21 points and I got 27, so I won by a bonus question.

@HeadNorth Misspent youth watching Top of the Pops, The Chart Show, MTV and listening to the Official Chart countdown every Sunday. Sometimes, it is just luck whether you get questions you know. My questions were mostly from the 90s and 80s. I would be in trouble if they were anything newer than 2000 though!

With 3 in 10, they were probably the only 3 I remember of Mike and The Mechanics, and again most of the songs I remember were from the 90s.

Yes, it is absolutely live. You are asked to turn the radio off while you are on.

I won a digital radio but would not have minded the T-Shirt, although it would swamp me as it's one size only and I'm tiny.

OMG I heard that one and can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing, which is weird because i probably only hear popmaster twice a year on average.

Wow my dh will be jealous. We listen to the repeat late at night (such romantics 🤣). Dh has a great vinyl collection and gets a good score but would be different on air live! Well done x
