Happy to answer any questions, especially about the surgery etc

Definitely a thread I would have found comfort in when I was going through the worst time so hopefully it can help another mother Smile

I don't have a question but hope your little boy and you are both ok 🤗

What was the reason for the operation? Hope the surgery went well, and you’re okay as well.

Goodness, what a hard thing to go through. How old is your son now? How long ago did it happen?

How is he recovering!?

Oh goodness your poor son. Was it due to an injury or something else?

Blimey , was it an accident or growth problem? A boy I went to school with had his leg amputated when he was a child and it's not held him back one bit!

What a hard thing to go through. Did your DS and your family get any counselling in how to deal with this ?

How have other children reacted ?

I havent really got any questions but just to let you know if he is interested in taking up a sport swimming is a brilliant option.

OMG @FHmama, how are you both coping? And the rest of the family? Fortunately with the Paralympics so prominent, this should not be a reason to hold him back at all. Wishing him, and you, all the best.

Which leg? What are replacement legs like these days? How is he managing?

Best wishes to you all and thank you for the AMA, great for helping others learn and hopefully to be less ignorant too.

I hope they got his pain under control after surgery? Hugs and handhold to both of you.

No questions, but I hope he’s doing well and not in pain.

My ds nearly lost his hands and feet post op. Your ds must be very brave - though dc do tend to accept things easier than us at times!

Sending so much love to you and your son but I can tell by your post that you both will be just absolutely fine and will lead a normal life and why not.FlowersBear

Hi all! Thanks for your q’s

He was born with a disability called Fibular Hemimelia which caused major (right) lower leg and foot/ankle deformities. He had a very severe case and amputation was the only way he’d ever be able to walk.

My son is 19 months old and I am a 22 year old student, he had the surgery on Thursday and we are home now.

He is recovering quite well. He was ‘walking’ on his knees before surgery and is unable to do that now he has a big cast on so is quite frustrated at the lack of mobility, but in April he will have his cast removed and get his first prosthetic leg so exciting chapter to come.

I haven’t had any counselling but I am feeling better than expected, we’ve had a long time to come to terms with it.

He is on regular morphine, paracetamol and ibuprofen and luckily doesn’t seem to be in much pain 3 days post-op.

Thankyou all 🥰

Other children's reactions -

Before his op he had a much shorter leg so we'd regularly get children asking why his legs were two different sizes Grin and would answer it in the most appropriate way.

My younger sister (Ollie's auntie) is only 9 and she is amazing with it all.

I think children are less judgmental than adults, they ask and then get on with it - instead of pointing and staring like I've had some adults in the past!

I had assumed your child was now much older, perhaps a teenager now. I hadn’t realised it was so recent. I was going to ask about school, friendships, sport, etc, at both primary and secondary. I wish him lots of success in life.

Thank you for the update. Glad he’s doing well.

(Did you mean to put his name in your last post - maybe report yourself to mn to get it removed).

How long did the surgery take?
Is your DS old enough to have some idea what is going on?
Will the hospital provide him with appropriate psychological support during his treatment? I presume he’ll need new prosthetic limbs over the years as he grows and specialised ones for different activities.
