NC for this as I remained anonymous, which was fairly pointless as I did tell some family and friends and it spread from there.

O just seen age of your son now, just a teenager and a bit to go yet!

tolerable · 15/06/2021 18:02

ohhhhhhh! ha!!!! (havent read through yet)....is the unimagineable - amazing?? do you auto recieve anysorta financial advisor??
what is THE absolute life changer -apart from maybe financial freedom,obv...that been as a result of it?

TooHotSendHelp · 15/06/2021 18:03

As it took two months to be deposited did you get any sort of advance on the money or anything like that?

saltncheese · 15/06/2021 18:04

I'm surprised you didn't give more money to friends and family ( not the grabby ones ) especially as you seem to be modest in your own wants.

I would love to win the NL - but I would give most of the money away - in part to keep my life style similar to theirs - but I wouldn't want to hoard the money either.

(I hope this doesn't sound judgmental- I wouldn't ask you this if I knew you in real life and this is AMA!)

PocketPenny · 15/06/2021 18:04

Has your political outlook changed?

RiaOverTheRainbow · 15/06/2021 18:05

Did you make any big, frivolous purchases? Go on any fabulous holidays?

What advice would you give to a new lottery winner (so my daydreams can be as accurate as possible Grin)?

airbags · 15/06/2021 18:05

many congratulations and I'm very happy for you. I have fantasised about what I'd do and mentally I've allocated sums to individual family members and friends.

Did you do this too and then change your mind when they got "grabby"? Would you have given more away had they not been entitled?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/06/2021 18:06

@ohdannyboy

That's an amazing amount of money ! Personally I'd struggle to cope with THAT much - 1 million would be just right - but good for you.
Nah, you couldn't even give up work with a million pound win nowadays. By the time you've bought a decent 4-5 bed house in some places and done any renovations, replaced your cars if needed, gone on a couple of nice holidays, put some aside for kids' uni/weddings/first deposit on flat etc, given some to relatives & charity, topped up your pension, there won't be a whole lot left.....

£14 million is a lot and that amount seems a bit scary to me, but it would be preferable over just ONE million (if I could only win once, like ha ha). You'd be able to be really generous with people and charities and still not have to worry about money yourself.

Pemberleys · 15/06/2021 18:06

What is the most frivolous thing you have bought?

Pipsquiggle · 15/06/2021 18:06

Have you bought a house with a swimming pool? Have you got a house keeper as well as cleaner and gardener?

All of the above I would love

tbtf · 15/06/2021 18:06

What's the best holiday you've been on since winning?

Yayayaya20 · 15/06/2021 18:08

Love this thread and here for the updates

Sassanacs · 15/06/2021 18:08

I always imagined winning an amount like this that you wouldn't have to touch the main winnings as the interest alone could support you. Is/was that the case?

CustardySergeant · 15/06/2021 18:09

Why did you have to open "a private bank account"? Aren't all personal bank accounts private and why couldn't it be paid into your existing bank account?

gigi556 · 15/06/2021 18:10

Do you still play the lottery?

VettiyaIruken · 15/06/2021 18:10

@CustardySergeant

I was about to ask the same thing.
2020onandon · 15/06/2021 18:10

Congratulations OP! Like you, I'm a single parent and often browse Rightmove dreaming of owning my own home. You've restored my faith that it can happen!

How long did it actually take to settle in that you'd won? You checked at work...were you able to actually concentrate the rest of the day? I think I'd keep popping to the toilet to do a crazy happy dance and a silent scream Smile

Wishing you all the best OP. It sounds like you are really grounded with your win and it's fantastic that you do volunteering.

NCuserer · 15/06/2021 18:12

@YellowFish12

OP are you spending capital or interest?

Did you go to e.g. a private bank and have wealth management advice?

Capital from holiday homes and interest from bank account

I had to open a private account and both the bank and NL have provided a great deal of advice

If I won that sum of money I would definitely give a lump sum to all my close relatives (10 of them) to do with as they please. I would give them all the same whether I like them or not. I would give my children a decent lump sum to buy a house to be secure. Charity would feature into it and friends who need help with their bills or mortgages. What is the point of having nearly 14 million still in the bank that you are unlikely to spend when you can do so much good with the money?

PinkCast · 15/06/2021 18:14

Yes I got the lump sum but I had to open a private bank account. It took about 2 months for the money to be deposited

This is probably a stupid question, but I don't live in the UK so maybe all you guys know what it is...... what is a private bank account?
Do the lottery people not just transfer the winnings into your own current account??
Two months to get the money.... I'd be afraid it was all a dream & not sure I could spend a penny til I saw the cold hard cash (well bank balance Grin)

Congrats OP! You sound very sensible, enjoy your winnings!

NCuserer · 15/06/2021 18:15

@Wren77

Congratulations!

Are there any downsides to winning so much money? I have often wondered if I would feel afraid of being burgled or having my children kidnapped if I had something worth taking from me - but then I am an anxious person (and a massive overthinker!!)
Have you had to increase your security in any way?

I guess paranoia is a part of it. Watch the documentary Jackpots and Jinxes. They were all British lottery winners who went public and had to have enhanced security.

I'll be honest I've never worried about it because so few people know

@HopeHappy

Oh, and my question would be:

If you've been able to take advantage of travelling more since you won, what was the best trip you've taken?

We went to NY, California and India. They were my favourites

Dunnesstores · 15/06/2021 18:18

Why would you buy 50 mulberry bags, I love good bags but that many just seems excessive and pointless.
Why would you rather have almost 14 million sitting in your bank than helping out the people you are close to?

Georgyporky · 15/06/2021 18:19

I'd expect the money in my current account immediately !
Why the 2 month delay ? By "private account" do you mean a numbered Swiss a/c?

NCuserer · 15/06/2021 18:19

@Vikingintraining

Wow, how lucky and how lovely! Congratulations! How did you receive the money, does it come all in one go, balance transfer to your account? Do friends and family always expect you to pay for things when you go out? Do you still play the lottery?
All in one go and into a private bank account

No! I pay sometimes and my family/friends (who do know about my lottery win) pay sometimes. If we go to a particularly fancy place I will pay
