NC for this as I remained anonymous, which was fairly pointless as I did tell some family and friends and it spread from there.

OP posts:

@NCuserer hi Courtney, slow news day?

I think it's interesting that you say in essence, your lifestyle hasn't changed that much since winning. I'm fascinated by the effect of money on human consciousness and this particular comment stood out to me. I read once that after a baseline level of comfort, (i.e. as long as you have the basics - a comfortable roof over your head, enough food, things to look forward to occasionally) extra cash above this midway mark doesn't improve your overall happiness as you're not likely to do anything differently.

So really - can money buy happiness beyond this point? Does more money = more happiness? I don't think the two are naturally synonymous

RewindTime85 · 16/06/2021 15:49

Courtney needs to keep herself in a job , right ?

hayley037 · 16/06/2021 15:51

Am amazed that some people would feel safe having vast amounts in a single bank, private or not, after what happened in 2008 and with how unstable the world is at the moment. There is no upper limit to the 85k just because a bank is private and exclusive, it's not the bank giving the guarantee, its essentially the financial services compensation scheme - if a private bank goes under it would have likely lost all its money so you won't get anything back from them.

It isn't difficult to spread some money around blue chip stocks and funds, anyone can do it at places like Hargreaves Lansdowne. At least if we did have another financial crisis you'd still own plenty of stocks, if all them went under we'd have bigger issues anyway.

Also amazed at the poster who said she'd bury gold bars in her back garden. Surely depositing some gold and jewellery in a few safety deposit boxes in a few major cities around the world would be a better idea.

Roussette · 16/06/2021 15:52

That article Shock
Poetic licence that's for sure.

HollowTalk · 16/06/2021 15:53

Regardless of whether it's true, and there are certainly some things that don't sound quite right, it does raise interesting questions about family relationships, our attitude to work, whether money can bring us happiness and how much we would do for our children, though at the risk of them possibly not having a 'normal' life. Also, who, in the OP's supposed position, would tell a new partner exactly how much she's worth?

Roussette · 16/06/2021 15:53

Exactly. Which is what I've been on about.

You may as well stick it in a biscuit tin under the bed.

bollihigh · 16/06/2021 16:02

Having got your article you disappear off to write it. Courtney is prolific and has done a lot of local paper stringers. Not that that is what happened of course.

Also by starting this thread, the story has now gone national so even if MN was a niche where most of the OP's acquaintances wouldn't see it - it has just got a much larger audience and jigsaw identification might come into play.

Memo to self - if I win I won't come here and publicize it however anonymously for what good could come of it.

SofiaMichelle · 16/06/2021 16:02

Exactly. Which is what I've been on about.

And me.

Never mind the 0.1% interest OP quoted meaning that the money is being eroded in real value by circa £200k/pa due to inflation alone.

Confused

Oh right good work op / Courtney

bollihigh · 16/06/2021 16:05

Out of genuine concern for the OP, I hope she doesn't come back for her own sake given it is now in the tabloids. I can forgo my natural prurience in this instance.

Courteney's gotta eat.

Even linking to the thread is suspicious - some have clicked and given Courteney some views. Who knows who's behind the whole manipulation? It could be you, trying to drum up doubt and suspense, then BAM! An article is available already - of all the things to write in the world. 🤣🤣

Anyway, doubting hat off. Nice entertainment.

Ireallydontknowimtired · 16/06/2021 16:11

*linking to the article, I mean. Not thread.

BMW6 · 16/06/2021 16:21

Crikey I bet OP has received dozens of begging PM's - especially from those posters deriding the amounts she gave (and didn't) to family and friends Hmm

Best wishes to you OP and thanks for the thread!

bollihigh · 16/06/2021 16:21

I agree either way great thread. If it was Courtney I could probably squeeze another article out of in the next few days.

I secretly won the lottery but no one believes me...

Roussette · 16/06/2021 16:31

Or...

I want to concentrate on the millions I won but pesky people keep offering me financial advice
Grin

SteveArnottsWaistcoat · 16/06/2021 16:45

Have you ever emailed a random person in a foreign land and asked them for their bank details so that they can help you transfer all your money into an offshore account?

This could be where I’m going wrong...

SteveArnottsWaistcoat · 16/06/2021 16:46

Fuck sake...why are the tabloids such total fucking parasites?

bollihigh · 16/06/2021 16:52

...because there is an insatiable appetite for click-bait to pay the bills sadly - real journalism is on the wane.

Gemandi2 · 16/06/2021 16:53

Massive congratulations that's amazing, I wouldn't be able to stop pinching myself - is there anything you have learned about yourself, others or life in general that has surprised you since your win ???!

AnathemaPulsifer · 16/06/2021 16:54

If you’re only getting £65k a year off £10 million you desperately need some more financial advice.

bollihigh · 16/06/2021 17:01

Plus if inflation takes off I would want a lot more spread, shares/bullion/property/art and the like.

Exactly Even with the markets as they are… they is seriously bloody awful. That’s a paltry 0.65%

Seriously.

I reckon if you were going to do this you’d choose single parent health care worker
