I work as a chatline operator AMA

I work currently as a chatline operator both doing texts and an online messaging service.

I used to work on the phones as well but stopped because I used to spend too long waiting for calls to come in sometimes, the text/online messages are more consistent.

Anyone have any questions?

Ok I have failed at the start as I didn't even make it clear what I do - I guess because I am so used to it that no other type of industry comes to mind when I think of chatlines.

I work on Adult chatlines

All sorts, mainly sex, fantasies that men have. The majority of the men want to feel like they are desired by you and you pretty much go along with wherever they lead it (within legal boundaries).

Some do just want general chit chat though and those are the ones that I feel a little uncomfortable about as they are clearly lonely in their every day lives.

How did you get that job?
I started off doing phone lines after seeing an advert in the back of a magazine. I was working nights at the time as a carer and was totally exhausted working in a place that treated me badly. Decided on a whim to give it a go.

The online stuff was harder to get into, I had to search places and actively look for adverts.

Yes! I have pretty standard things that I write in one way or another many times a day. It feels tedious a lot of the time. It doesn't challenge me intellectually at all but it pays the bills.

I can't, and don't of course. My job is to just make them feel that way. Telling them what I would like to do with them etc.

The online stuff I can often see photos of them should they choose to post them, I think often they get off on knowing you can see their photos - not that I really pay any attention to them.

I would not say they are intellectually challenged. It is harder over the internet to know what someone is like as you can't get so much from a message, but certainly when I did the phone lines there were a lot of men who came across as highly intelligent, well spoken etc

I manage about £10 an hour most of the time, it varies depending on how busy it is and also how quickly I can type.

The phone lines I could have been on about £18 an hour sometimes, but the lag between calls if I worked during the day rather than evenings and weekends meant that I was sitting around doing nothing waiting for a call so was much less.

That said, I am lucky to be with a company that pays well, I know other companies which it works out around £6 per hour - I would not work for them.

Not particularly. I am quite indifferent to it. It doesn't make me unhappy, but I can't say I can any enjoyment out of it. It feels quite mundane really.

Nope, never. I feel no attraction or desire towards anyone I speak to. I have spoken to others who do and I know some women who do the job because they really enjoy it and get a kick out of it themselves, but personally no.

I'd say about 80% is just very standard. They want to talk about different positions, perhaps have a fantasy about outdoors sex or maybe they like the thought of a finger up the bum but could never tell anyone that in their 'real life'.

There are some who want more of a domination thing, but it is quite limiting for them as there are rules about what we will talk about - light bondage yes, but actual harm and anything really disgusting and anything harmful is a no no.

There is a surprising number of men who are curious about using toys for their pleasure and every day I will get a few who like to wear womens underwear. I found there were more kinks and fetishes on the phone lines than online. I think that is probably because the companies advertise to certain markets and in fetish type publications and websites though.

Sometimes I do speak to transwomen, never a transman (at least not that they have told me) but it isn't too common. More often it is liking womens clothes than actually anyone who wants to or has transitioned in any way.

Sometimes I speak to women, I did have a it fairly often on the phones actually which surprised me the first few times. Less so on the online chat though. Although there are sometimes 'couples' where I am supposedly talking to the woman from the couple and she wants to chat about what you would do with her and her husband. Those I often think is actually a man playing out his fantasy.

I used to do phone chat lines about 20 years ago and phone would ring as soon as I put it down. I guess things have changed now.

Would you prefer the work to be over the phone or are you happier providing a text service?

Also if you have a partner how do they feel about it?
