I live on an island off the coast of America - ask me anything

As requested @IdaBWells Smile

There was a thread before but I can't find it. When Mumsnet has its brain fart a few months ago I could never get back in to my old account.

I live on a little island off the coast of Maine. I moved here after living in London for 15 years.

Hmm definitely think I should be played by Mila Kunis. Or Kathy Burke.

Oh, I was thinking of Keeley Hawes to play you in the heartwarming drama, Cat. And perhaps a Hemsworth as your DH?

catofdoom · 12/08/2019 19:50

@Didiusfalco not nearly as much as the mainland.

Only red squirrels, lots of deer, the occasional moose, seals, the odd shark, golden eagles and bald eagles. There is apparently a coyote but I've never seen it.

@BoreOfWhabylon I'll take Keely! I was thinking more Tom Hardy for DH. Hmm, maybe I could just play myself? Grin

@Didiusfalco we also have lots of cool birds. Big owls, huge woodpeckers, humming birds, red cardinals, lots of hawks.

Oh and fireflies and cicadas, both of which I love and make me feel like I'm in an America 80's film.

Whoa, that is stunningly beautiful!

JaimeBronde · 12/08/2019 21:24

I was thinking Emily Blunt would be perfect to play you Cat

catofdoom · 12/08/2019 21:26

@JaimeBronde she'll totally do too. Grin

@catofdoom thank you for replying, that sounds absolutely amazing. I would be so excited just to see one of those things (in the West Midlands so unlikely!)

catofdoom · 13/08/2019 15:08

DH can't sit still for a minute and loves building things.

He made ds a tug boat bed, an ice (or snow) bar for when we had a party and a wood fires sauna.

Not all shits and giggles though. Our road can be a nightmare most of the year!

That first picture is two inches of smooth ice.

MNOverinvestor · 13/08/2019 16:02

The tug boat looks so cool. Please tell me you have grippy metal things to strap to the bottom of your boots for the ice though. (I really hate slipping on ice and buy mine when I go to Scandinavia and then blow dust off them for the next eight years in the UK).

catofdoom · 13/08/2019 16:08

@MNOverinvestor DH is actually wearing clogs in that picture! HmmConfused

I wear grippy things with the coils AND inch long spikes. I'm terrified of falling. And this year will be buying studded tyres. There's a drop straight to the ocean on the right of the road!

Loopytiles · 13/08/2019 17:46

Lovely pics. Your DH is talented eh!

Scary, scary ice though. I am v risk averse. I enjoy reading of others’ adventures like this though!

SleepyKat · 08/09/2019 07:31

@catofdoom has hurricane Dorian affected you?

karenbokaren · 08/09/2019 11:59

@SleepyKat it was really rainy yesterday and a couple of little trees blew down. DH was bringing a boat back to the island so it was a lovely sail!

karenbokaren · 08/09/2019 12:00

Lively. It wasn't very lovely! Grin

SleepyKat · 08/09/2019 12:35

Sounds like it wasn't too bad, glad you're ok. I saw the hurricane had hit Canada which suprised me. Never knew they got that far north.

karenbokaren · 08/09/2019 13:25

@SleepyKat they don't usually! The cold water takes the power out of the hurricanes.

And our big storms are usually Nor'easters in November/December. We can get weird macro or micro bursts though and had a couple of small tornados this summer.

Justtheoneplease · 26/09/2019 08:14

Wow, what a fantastic thread. Thank you. Would love to see more photos especially of the summer. What great film it would be.

babypossum · 14/04/2020 09:09

If you're still on this thread OP, how is your lockdown going? Have there been many changes where you are with being able to get food to the island etc? Hope you're well and keeping safe.

Fixitquick · 18/04/2020 08:03

@babypossum I was thinking the same thing

RollerCoasterProteinSpill · 16/05/2020 19:50

Another fan here curious to know how you are dealing with the pandemic.
