Thought I would start a thread, as a young (ish) woman, who has had a below knee amputation..

Since having my leg removed friends and family have always had a lot of questions about what's it's like etc..

I constantly get stared at and sometimes even followed, when I go out. So I thought I would start a thread to answer questions people have about it..

You ask me whatever you like, I will answer them!

Don't worry I'm a rough cookie, so can handle any questions 😊

One of my dc’s is involved with sports and the classification system for competition is really interesting dhal - as a result we know three teens with identical above knee amputations and no other limitations. Sadly as all identical there can be no shoe swapping, which is a source of great sadness. They do share socks though. Grin DC is not an amputee (different disability) but competes in the same category.

(I’m a slightly related note - said dc is currently involved in research to develop limb socks that actively help to reduce infection risk. I don’t pretend to know the science, but the project sounds super interesting.)

@VQ1970 your partner sounds very courageous and brave. To make that decision still must of been tremendously difficult.

It's partners and parents of amputees who are the ones who deserve kind words.
Dealing with a constant rollercoaster of emotions..lows, worry, anger, stress, sadness, pain.

I did say previously, it would be good to set up a thread from a different perspective.
In my experience loved ones can be scared to tell the truth and be honest about how life is for them. Which is sad..you are the ones that deserve all the credit.
How my partner hasn't took my leg off me and left me in the middle of nowhere after all these years I do not know 😂

I haven't read the full thread yet, I'll go back.

When I was a teen I had a friend who's dad had lost a leg, only I didn't know. I was sitting on the sofa chatting and, presumably because I didn't expect it, didn't notice that he had one leg, and a prosthetic leaning up against the sofa next to him.
Friends brother came in, gave his dad all sorts of attitude and the dad PICKED UP HIS LEG AND THREW IT AT FRIENDS BROTHER! I was, to put it mildly, quite shocked.

Has anyone ever been surprised to learn you only have one leg?

My mischievous dc sometimes hides DP’s leg in the bath.

@OneHanded Gosh you have had a really rough journey so far! I hope this infection goes..
you need to start a thread!
I have so many questions for you! Xx

@HoofWankingSpangleCunt thank you very much. I didn't expect anybody to take time to write such lovely messages!
Well I have lost a few of my future book sales, telling my story on here 😂

@50shadesofgreyrock wow that sounds amazing!! You must be so proud ❤️ I want to know more! By the end of this thread, MN will of turned into just a disability forum 😂

@Lacypants you must of been gobsmacked 🙈

Oh yes I have had some fun over the years with it..
When I first had my leg amputated, it was a long time before I had my prosthetic. I still wasn't allowed my driving license back, so my best friend use to have to drive (pre partner and children)

We use to have the biggest laugh together!

Obviously in a car nobody could tell there was anything wrong. If we were ever stuck in traffic or at traffic lights and a car full of lads or workmen in a van were at the side of us, they would give us all the usual stuff..winking, leering, shouting out the windows, being crude (you will all know exactly what I mean if your a woman!) we would both smile etc..and then I would just pop my little leg up! My best friend would draw a face on it! So when I suddenly would lift it up there was what looked like worm with a big smiling face on it! They would always be absolutely horrified 😂

Extremely childish! But it was absolutely hysterical to see their leering faces turn to utter shock 😊
