Thank you :)

Hi op, I’m sure it’s very very cheeky of me to ask and please say no if you don’t want to! I’ve been stuck in a hair rut for a long time and would like a change but have no idea what. If I could send you a pic of my face via pm could you give me suggestions re cut/colour? I’m a student nurse and single mum of three and have no time to go to hairdressers for consultations etc! I’d put a pic here but I don’t know how to name change Confused
This has been an amazing thread! Going to look for that hair mask now!

LorelaiRoryEmily · 17/04/2019 05:18

@Mamabird3 not cheeky at all. Fire ahead and I’ll tell you what I think no problem at all, I’d be delighted to help😊

Sorry if it's been asked before...but best products/treatment for damaged fragile thin brittle hair

namechangechanger · 17/04/2019 06:56

@LorelaiRoryEmily hi OP, have you ever worked with hair that's been coloured with henna? My hairs currently red with coppery tones, I want to go lighter to a more gingery orange colour but when I tried to bleach it using b blonde powder with 40% vol and left it on for 40 mins the colour didn't budge AT ALL! Is there any way of lightening it? Or do I just have to live with it as I know henna is known to be really permanent Confused I'll attach a pic of the colour atm

Thank you op!

DS is applying for hairdressing apprenticeships. I wondered what natural abilities you need in order to do well and would you recommend it as a career?

LittleAndOften · 17/04/2019 08:35

Thank you OP!

LorelaiRoryEmily · 17/04/2019 09:39

@amy85 I love the Schwarzkopf professional BC range, the Repair rescue is fab

@namechangechanger I’ve actually never had anyone come to me after using henna. If you used bleach that strong(I’m guessing meant 40 vol/12%?) and it didn’t budge then you need to leave it alone. I wouldn’t mix bleach with 40 vol to put on anyone’s hair under any circumstances, it can literally turn your hair to water!
My advice would be go to a good salon, tell them what’s in your hair, and tell them what you tried yourself and see what they think

@clayspaniel it’s a great career! I’ve been doing it since I was 15 full time(14 part time!), 21 years almost. I love it.

I think I you need to be quite a tolerant person, a really good listener and generally a people person. Patience is a big thing and the ability to hear all the things that clients don’t actually say!

It takes along time to earn decent money and I’d advise him to charge everyone From the start. No free Blowdrys in his own time. Doing it for nothing even when you start of leads people to expect it, and get the bump when you start to charge. If it’s free they don’t see the value in it and no one appreciates it. So freebies for mother only!!
I learned that the hard way. Charge everybody something!

He’ll know very quickly if it’s for him. Natural ability is very obvious very quickly in hairdressing. I hope he loves it!

Is hairdressing a good career to go into in your general opinion? What kind of person is successful at it? What are considered the best training colleges? My DD is obsessed with being a hairdresser.

Chimchar · 17/04/2019 10:11

Hi @LorelaiRoryEmily
DD, 15, is desperate to bleach her short hair. She's bought a Jerome Russell BBlonde box bleach for home use.
She wants it to look grey. It's currently a mid brown and not coloured or anything.

Is it going to end up orange?!

Any advice most welcome.

Many thanks.

PhilomenaButterfly · 17/04/2019 11:23

Lorelai the GP says it's where the lice have burrowed into my scalp. I'll try a really good moisturising shampoo though, thanks.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 17/04/2019 11:40

@Kokeshi it’s a great career! I can’t advise re training colleges as I’m in Ireland. It’s totally different here.

She’ll need to be patient and a great listener, friendly and a people person in general. Maybe look into a Saturday job in a salon for a start and see if she likes it? That’s a great test. Long hours, hard work and crap money. If she can stick that it’s half the battle. Good luck to her😊

OP posts:
LorelaiRoryEmily · 17/04/2019 11:41

@Chimchar yep it most likely will be orange first!! Bleaching at home isn’t really something I’d recommend. Colours have a cut off point. Bleach can keep working until it turns your hair to water. Take her to a salon! Grey is hard to achieve even fir the most seasoned among us😊

@philomenabutterfly ouch. Your poor scalp. Lots of moisture and be kind to it. Massage it if you can

I knew that's what you'd say!!
Appreciate your time and advice. ThanksCake

SouthWestmom · 17/04/2019 12:09

@namechangechanger

I had henna and visited about four salons all of whom said they couldn't colour over the top even after a strand test. I ended up with a pixie...

sparkleandsleep · 17/04/2019 12:41

This thread is amazing, thank you!
I'd love some advice for my teenage daughter if possible. She has naturally straight, thick dark blonde hair and recently wanted some ashy coloured highlights. Went to my usual hairdresser who always does mine perfectly but she's unhappy with what she did- it's a bit stripy, highlights are concentrated around the back and they're almost white.
Dd is reluctant to go back and is too scared to try anything at home in case it makes things worse- is there anything you'd recommend?

LorelaiRoryEmily · 17/04/2019 13:08

@sparkleandsleep that does look pretty stripey, was the hairdresser attempting a balayage kind of look? If a client came in to me like that I’d recommend a mixture of hilites and lowlites to break up the stripes. The other other option would be to colour over them but I’d try to break it up first.

Do you have a good relationship with your hairdresser? I’d contact her and explain that it looks stripey and see what she suggests. If it were me I’d offer to redo

OP posts:
sparkleandsleep · 17/04/2019 14:06

Thanks for the reply. Hairdresser has seen it since when she had it cut but didn't say anything. Dd doesn't really want to put any more highlights or lowlights in, just tone it in if possible so we've just left it as it is! I had no idea what if anything we could do at home to 'fix' it.
Original attempt was for some subtle highlights hidden throughout the underneath to avoid noticeable root regrowing... not quite what we achieved.

tipsytrainee46 · 17/04/2019 14:17

I'm getting married next year and my hair is generally okay, but can get a little scraggly (dead ends etc), especially as it gets longer. It's currently fairly long - mid back and not in the best condition. With until July next year, what should I be doing to make sure its in the best possible condition for the wedding. I would like it to stay long, although wouldn't mind giving it a chop now to grow back in time for next July

LorelaiRoryEmily · 17/04/2019 14:24

@sparkleandsleep you could try a toner. I’m totally clueless as to what you would buy in the way of pharmacy brands though. Sounds like she went up to far with them if they were supposed to be underneath and not too visible. You could try a colour as close to you dds natural as you can get and cover up the offending hilites, cover the ones that are annoying and leave the rest?
