I work near Appleby every year after the horse show the surrounding areas and miles of the routes home where people have parked why do they leave so much rubbish every where why don't the clear up after themselves . why do they think it's acceptable just to leave shit every where when the leave where they have camped . And whats your views on the travellers who broke into Thwaites brewery in blackburn and caused 100's of thousands of pounds worth of damaged.

These questions have been previously answered in the thread that you don’t appear to have read.

My question about breast implants was because of the many crappy programmes with titles starting "my big fat Gypsy......insert whatever" i which so many of the females seemed incredibly buxom.

If a traveller were to marry out, would they be ostracized/forced to abandon their plans ? Are there arranged marriages? I did read that "the grabbing" was just rubbish and wrongly portrayed in the tv progs. Is Appleby essentially a dating event?

SmellMyBeads · 14/07/2018 17:31

AMA Killed by nosey fookers 😂

@TakeaBreak2 You need to be careful who you are chatting to on Facebook, you're no longer anonymous. Wink

MadisonMontgomery · 14/07/2018 18:27

Hope this isn’t too nosy but I’m really interested - I’ve seen a few posters saying that if they have traveller blood other travellers can tell - can I ask what it is that you recognise?

TakeABreak2 · 14/07/2018 18:29

limpopbongo
arrganged marriagesdont happen
i dont know what you mean by abandon plans things would carry on as normal?
appleby is some where we buy stuff like a big market but the young girls and boys do go to find there future partner

Limpopobongo · 14/07/2018 18:32

Apologies takeabreak,, i meant, if you are a "traveller" and a young man or woman, is it acceptable to marry someone outside of the recognised traveller community? If you did, would you be ostracised /disowned by the community?

Would others seek to prevent you from marrying outside of the community?

Limpopobongo · 14/07/2018 18:34

Another question..

I have a kind of admiration for the travelling community. The freedom of the open road, a whiff of FMOTL, not having someone tell you where to live, etc

If i saw a group of travellers and i went and had a chat with them, do you think theyd let me join them? I do have an Irish passport and irish ancestry

rwalker · 14/07/2018 18:53

sorry but the trail of destruction and shit starts at appleby through kirby stephen on to kirkby lonsdale and away into the distance in the direction of skipton .We have had travellers SHITTING in the carpark RIGHT BY THE DOOR and no it's not animal as they don't tend to use toilet paper .As for respect at the local gym we used to get white bathrobes for the steam room stopped now due to travellers using them with black shoe polish to clean there boots. Told about it and they told staff to fuck off and they alway parked in the only disable spaces in there vans with ladder on for roofing repairs .Whilst i'm sure all travlleres are the same I can only form MY opinon on my experiences and unfortunately they have all been very negative . As for the mess at music festivals it all on site and the organiser pay to have it sorted where as WE have to pay the council to deal with the mess left behind not the people who do it.

Brendatheblender · 14/07/2018 19:39

Do travellers ever live on river boats?

It’s something that I have always wanted to do. I love the idea of the freedom to go wherever takes my fancy. DP on the other hand comes from a huge family (one of ten) and wants to be near to his family at all times so I will never be able to do this which makes me sad.

HoneyMonster12 · 14/07/2018 19:41

Is there a difference in Romany/English/Irish travellers? If so, what?

Fascinating post!

I’m also from Newcastle :)

Couple of questions please - firstly, at what age are children generally allowed to play out unsupervised? On TV programmes they show small toddlers running around with other kids/horses/bikes/cars and no adults around?
Secondly, do all traveller children drink energy drinks? Again, as seen on TV and also whilst accidentally driving through a travellers settling, lots of toddlers/children roaming around with a can of Monster Energy.
Lastly, you mention ‘traveller ways’ a lot, could you tell us either 5 or 10 of the most important traveller ways/rules that you live by?

Thank you!

TakeABreak2 · 14/07/2018 21:23

cornishblue
my dd is 3 and a half and i let her play out by her self - obviously keeping an eye on her while i do other stuff .. we have big electric gates though

There are travellers on boats. They are called bargees and Ronnie Wood is a famous one.

TangelasVine · 14/07/2018 22:01

Yes there are a Romany group that live on boats. I know a few of them.

I'd also say as half Romany that there is quite a difference. The language and stories and culture is different and the Roma are thought to have originated in India. Not necessarily English as are in every country in Europe and further afield.

Interesting thread OP and thank you.

TiltedTowers · 14/07/2018 22:03

Sorry if this has been asked before but do travellers move to Britain because the British cannot tell from the way you talk that you're travellers? Or is that a benefit? I know you're proud of your culture but I imagine there'd be more prejudice in Ireland because people can 'read'' the accent.

TiltedTowers · 14/07/2018 22:06

I second MadisonMontgomery's question. How can you tell if somebody has a little bit of traveller blood?

EvilMorty · 14/07/2018 22:20

British cannot tell from the way you talk that you're travellers?

You can tell this. I have met a lot of travellers, in the same way OP says she just knows a fellow traveller, so do a lot of people, it’s actually very easy to tell. I can’t put my finger on a single characteristic and it’s not just the voice, but you can always tell.

TazTheFairy · 14/07/2018 22:22

Thank you op, this has been a brilliant thread. I've lived in an area with a large traveller population for a long time now and the prejudice is uncalled for IMO. There's idiots in every culture, just seems the travellers all get tarred with the same brush.

Andromeida59 · 15/07/2018 06:15

Apologies if it's been asked but three questions.

How did you feel about the burglar that was killed a few months ago and the Traveller community response to it?

What happens to victims of DV in your community? Are they advised to seek help or are they shamed in to staying (or somewhere in between).

Why do so many Travellers seemingly avoid paying tax (please correct me if I'm wrong)? If people are travelling and doing lots of odd jobs then they're not likely to be tracked down for not paying tax
