Selection of the best air coolers

Summer days and nights can leave you feeling hot and sticky, which can make working and sleeping in the heat very hard. Apart from living with your head in the freezer, what can you do to keep cool and rested in the summer months?

If you don’t want to fork out for the best portable air conditioner, an air cooler can help you feel more refreshed during the summer months. It uses a combination of airflow and evaporation to help you feel cooler. Air coolers won’t be for everyone as they are not as effective as an AC unit for really giving your room that chilled effect and they don’t work as well in humid weather. However, they are cheaper and kinder to the environment than air conditioners and can work better than a fan.

If you do decide an air cooler is for you, we’ve researched the best products currently on the market, combining our Mumsnet forum users recommendations with expert advice and consumer reviews. Here are the best rated air coolers for keeping you chilled this summer.

Plus, for more ways to make summer a breeze, we’ve also rounded up the best cooling boxes, tower fans, and handheld fans according to Mumsnetters.

Best air coolers - at a glance:

1

Best air cooler overall

Symphony Diet 3D 12i Tower Air Cooler

What we like
  • Large tank capacity

  • Can cool rooms up to 12m²

  • An alarm tells you when the tank is empty

What we don't like
  • Quite noisy, especially at top speed

  • Filters have to be cleaned and changed often

Key specs

Price: £130 | Tank capacity: 12L | Air circulation: 840m³/h | Speed settings: 3 | Oscillating: No | Freezer blocks: No | Dimensions: 30 x 30 x 84.5cm | Weight: 7.7kg | Power: 170W

Our verdict

This air cooler has the largest tank on our list, which means you won’t have to keep refilling it as often, and it will provide you with cooler air for longer. Another selling point is the 840m³/h air circulation which means it can cool rooms up to 12m² or a conservatory up to 6m².

The four wheels allow you to move it around to keep cool on unbearably hot days and it even has a mosquito net for keeping insects away. Nice features include a pop-up touch screen and a remote control for easily changing the three speed settings. The empty tank alarm lets you know when the water eventually does run out, so you don’t have to worry about it stopping working on a hot summer day. And thanks to the anti-allergy washable filter, your cool air will be cleaner, too.

I have a JML Chillmax Air on my bedside table. You fill it with water and it has a filter you can either just run under the tap or wet and freeze. Mine uses two litres of water every 24 hours.
See Post
Our verdict

The compact and lightweight design of the JML Chillmax Air makes this the perfect air cooler for popping next to your bed and giving you a blast of cold air in lieu of a desk fan. It works by drawing hot air in through a cooling filter and spraying a fine mist of refreshing air. As it is a humidifier too, it will add moisture to dry air.

The filter is washable and has been designed to prevent a build up of bacteria and mould. The tank only holds 610ml, which is small compared to some of the others in our round-up; however, it is said to last for up to ten hours, so more than enough for use at night in your bedroom or throughout the day at work. It has a built-in soft glow LED night light with a choice of seven colours so you can easily adjust it in the night or use it for a child’s bedroom. The Chillmax Air has four speed settings, including ‘turbo’ for those nights when it’s extra hot. It’s worth noting that some users say it is noisy, which could be a problem if you’re a light sleeper.

Best smart air cooler

Princess Smart Air Cooler

What we like
  • Voice control compatible

  • Can be controlled from an app on your phone

  • Timer and sleep mode

What we don't like
  • Pricey

  • Smaller water tank than some others on the list

  • Users say it can be quite noisy

Key specs

Price: £130 | Tank capacity: 3.5L | Air circulation: 300 m³/h | Speed settings: 3 | Oscillating: Yes | Freezer blocks: Yes | Dimensions: 76 x 28 x 22cm | Weight: 4kg | Power: 70W

Our verdict

Want an air cooler that is easy to use? While you probably wouldn’t expect your air cooler to be able to connect to Wi-Fi, the Princess Smart Air Cooler can do just that, allowing you to be able to control it from your phone and even use it with Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant. This means you barely have to lift a finger to change the settings.

The different speed options are normal, natural and sleep, with the latter reducing the noise so you can doze off to a gentle breeze. The 3.5-litre tank is on the small side compared to the likes of the Symphony Diet 3D, so it will need refilling more often, but thanks to the two freezer packs, you can help keep your air feeling nice and cool on a hot summer day. If you don’t want it running unnecessarily, you can set a timer and even schedule it to come on, which will help limit the energy you use. Users say it doesn’t completely cool a room but will leave you feeling more refreshed.

Best air cooler for bedrooms

Screwfix DG1903 5LTR Air Cooler

What we like
  • Good value for money

  • Cools small areas well when using ice packs/cold water

  • Multiple functions - oscillating and nighttime mode - and comes with a remote

What we don't like
  • Won't cool down a big room like an air conditioner or industrial size fan

  • A bit of a faff to constantly change ice packs to keep air cool

Key specs

Price: £46 | Tank capacity: 5L | Air circulation: 328.8 m³/hr | Speed settings: 3 | Oscillating: Yes | Freezer blocks: Yes | Dimensions: Not specified | Weight: 6kg | Power: 65W

MNHQ tester Nino · Tried & Tested
If you are looking for something a bit better than a fan, but don't want to fork out for an air conditioner, this is a good purchase. Especially for smaller rooms! Do not expect to get the temperature down in a medium-sized bedroom. It was good to maintain a temperature and if you were efficient with the ice blocks you actually felt cold if you had the fan pointing at you!
See Post
Our verdict

This air cooler came recommended by one of our MNHQ testers who said that, when it was positioned to face him, it kept him cool all night during hot weather when the room was around 24 degrees. The DG1903 5LTR Air Cooler can hold up to five litres and has a fairly decent airflow capacity of 328.8 m³/hr, so it could be a good option for putting in your bedroom at night to help you feel more refreshed when you sleep.

Like the others on our list, it won’t chill a room significantly, like an air conditioner would, but it’s a much more affordable option and works better than your standard fan. Our tester Nino said to get the best effect, you should put the ice packs in and swap them regularly to cool a room by a few degrees. The oscillating function will help to circulate the air too, to help you and your family feel cooler.

We have a Beldray cool/ionizer cooler, you can use dry or with water/freezer blocks, and a proper Pifco air conditioning unit, all singing and dancing.
See Post
Our verdict

If you’re looking for a device that is multifunctional and can be used all year round, the Beldray Four-in-One Air Cooler cools, heats and cleans the air in your home, which means it won’t sit around unused for months at a time.

A six-litre water tank and two ice packs cool the air with three speed settings that can be easily controlled by a remote control - so you don’t even have to move, which is something to be thankful for when it’s a scorcher of a day. A handy room temperature display makes it easy to know when you need to change the fan speed and, although the instructions aren’t easy to read, users found it quick and simple to set up. The 360-degree wheels make it easy to move it around too, so you can keep cool wherever you are.

How does an air cooler work?

Sitting somewhere between a fan and a portable air conditioner, an air cooler - also known as an evaporative or swamp cooler - works by drawing in hot air and blowing it through an absorbent pad or honeycomb-like membrane. The air cooler has a tank filled with water that evaporates and cools the air, which is blown out using a fan.

What’s the difference between an air cooler and an air conditioner?

It looks similar to a portable air conditioner, but instead of using an air coolant to cool down the air, it draws in the warm air and sends it through a cooling pad. An air cooler doesn’t require outside ventilation, unlike an air conditioner which must be vented, although most work better when near an open window

The difference in the cooling effect is huge though - an air conditioner can chill the room by up to 15 degrees whereas you’re looking at around four degrees for an air cooler. An air cooler is more effective in hot, dry climates as they can add more humidity to the air. For this reason, some people find that they’re not all that effective at keeping you chilled during hot weather in the UK.

While it won’t dramatically cool the room like an air conditioner, it can provide a refreshing blast of cool air to help you sleep and work better - and they’re less pricey than an air conditioner and use a lot less energy.

How to choose the best air cooler for you

Size

You can either get compact-sized air coolers for using on your desk/bedside table or larger models that are designed to cool bigger spaces. The capacity of an air cooler refers to the size of the tank and how much water it can hold. The air coolers on our list vary from around 600ml to 12L and this will affect how often you will need to refill the water. Depending on what you want to use it for, you’ll probably need it to last at least a working day or night so it doesn’t cut out. For some air coolers, you’ll need to regularly change the water anyway to prevent mould and bacteria so make sure to look for tanks that can be easily removed.

Features

Most air coolers are easy to use. Some come with remote controls or one button for ease of use when changing the settings; the Princess Smart Air Cooler even connects to Wi-Fi so you can control it with an app and voice control.

If you want to ensure your machine pumps out clean air, look for one with air cleaning filters and some air coolers also work as a humidifier to add moisture to the air. You may also want automatic shut-off functions and timers for helping to reduce how much energy you use and, if you want to move the air cooler from room to room, look out for swivel wheels or a carry handle.

Airflow

Look out for the air circulation, which will show how large a space it can provide air to - for example, 840m³/h can cool a room up to 12m². Most air coolers have three fan speeds to choose from and some also have an oscillating function which moves the fan round to provide more air circulation.

How much does it cost to run an air cooler?

This will vary depending on your energy tariff and how much you pay for one unit of energy (1kw). As of July 2023, the government’s Energy Price Guarantee caps the per unit cost at 30p per kiloWatt an hour.

The smallest models on our list use 7.5W whereas a larger model may use around 100W. A 100W appliance will cost around 3p per hour to run.
