Trunki Folding Scooter review: is clever carry strap the answer to parents’ prayers?

Bright, bold and fun, the Trunki Scooter is great for young kids, while a carry strap will prevent aching arms on the way back from the school run.

Our verdict

Trunki, the maker of some of the best kids’ luggage around, also knows a thing or two about making a great scooter. With its wide footplate, responsive steering and a handlebar that can be adjusted to four different heights, this three-wheeled scooter is a great buy for young kids. The Trunki’s innovative carry strap, which allows the scooter to be slung over one shoulder or extended to cross the body, is a real godsend for parents who are forever lugging scooters back from the school run. The removable strap can also be used to tow the scooter if you have a little one still a bit unsteady on their wheels.

Both my kids loved it, I loved it and if you invest in one, I suspect you and your child will develop a soft spot for the Trunki Folding Scooter too.

What is the Trunki Folding Scooter like to assemble?

The first big plus for the Trunki Folding Scooter was taking it out the box to discover it comes already assembled, unlike previous scooters I have tested from the likes of Micro Scooters, Banwood and smarTrike. There was no faffing around with Allen Keys, all I had to do was set the handlebar to the right height (between 77 – 91cm) and the scooter was good to go.

There are two metal clips at the top and bottom of the T-bar to attach the strap. If using the strap to tow, it should be attached to the bottom clip only.

What’s the Trunki Folding Scooter like to look at?

three wooden spoons

Just like Trunki’s instantly recognisable ride-on suitcases, the scooter is bold, bright and full of character. Although the design will appeal to toddlers and young children, slightly older children may find the design and cartoon bubble-writing a little bit childish.

Interestingly, Trunki shies away from flashing LED wheels, which can be found on many other scooter brands, including Micro Scooters and Globber. This would not be a deal-breaker for me, but it is worth noting that this feature isn’t included on this particular scooter.

What’s the Trunki Folding Scooter like in day-to-day use?

LeapFrog Ice Cream Cart

My five-year-old and six-year-old took the Trunki out for a spin and both felt the scooter offered a smooth ride, even on gravel footpaths. They both appreciated the wide footplate, which offered extra stability, and the responsive steering, which allowed them to take tighter corners with ease. Unlike the Globber Primo, the Trunki does not come with a steering lock, but the tow strap effectively does the same job, in helping scooting newbies find their feet.

When the kids inevitably got tired of racing around the park, two buttons on the front of the scooter folded the whole thing down and the strap was clipped in place so the Trunki could be carried home. I was really impressed by how easy it was to fold the Trunki down. Unlike some scooters, there was no stiffness and the whole process was very smooth. The carry strap is a great feature, and it’s a mystery why more scooters don’t come with something similar, which would make life so much easier for parents. The Trunki Folding Scooter also comes with a travel bag for longer journeys.

Is the Trunki Folding Scooter good value for money?

Yes, I feel the Trunki Folding Scooter offers good value for money. Retailing at £100 on Amazon at the time of writing (May 14th, 2024), it is £30 more than the Globber Primo, which is aimed at the same age range. However, although the Globber is a good scooter, I felt the overall experience was better with the Trunki, and I would argue that the extra £30 would be well spent.
