Secret Linen Store Natural French Ticking Stripe bedding review: "slightly crisp, slightly textured"

If you like your bedding relaxed rather than glossy, and grown-up rather than trend-led, Secret Linen Store’s French Ticking Stripe set promises breathable comfort with a classic stripe. I put the cotton and linen blend to the test in a busy family home.

What Mumsnet users say

My verdict

This is bedding for people who want their bedroom to feel calm without looking like they’ve staged it for Instagram. The stripe gives it interest, but it’s subtle enough that you won’t suddenly wake up one morning and decide you hate it.

Despite being a linen-blend bedding set, it still feels like linen. Slightly crisp, slightly textured. DH definitely clocked that more than I did. If you’re used to silky sateen, there will be an adjustment period.

It’s not cheap. And yes, I did find myself shoving the duvet back into the corners most evenings. But once it’s on the bed and vaguely straightened, it makes the whole room look better. More intentional. Less “we collapsed here at 10.47pm”.

Would I replace all our bedding with it? No. Would I keep one in rotation for when I want the bedroom to feel pulled together with minimal effort? Absolutely.

How I’ve tested the Secret Linen Store French Ticking Stripe bedding

DH and I slept on the French Ticking Stripe duvet cover and pillowcases in super king size for several weeks in our own bed at home. This wasn’t a one-night-and-done situation. It went straight into our normal rotation, replacing our usual set, and was washed and dried exactly as the care label suggests.

We used it through typical family life: windows cracked open on the rare mild night we’ve had recently, heating on when it turned colder, dogs occasionally hopping up uninvited and the bed being made in a hurry most mornings. In other words, real life rather than showroom conditions.

I paid particular attention to how it felt straight out of the packet compared with after a couple of washes, how breathable it was overnight, whether the buttons stayed secure, whether the duvet shifted inside the cover and how the fabric softened over time. We also compared it mentally with other bedding we’ve tested recently, including high thread count cotton sateen and 100% linen, to see where this cotton-linen blend sits. Everything in this review is based on that at-home testing.

The bedding set looks lovely in our master bedroom

How does the Secret Linen Store French Ticking Stripe set feel to sleep on?

Out of the packet, it’s distinctly linen. Crisp to the touch and noticeably rougher than the Tielle 600 thread count cotton sateen we usually sleep on. If you’re used to silky cotton, this will feel very different at first.

The good news is that it improves. After a couple of washes at 40 degrees and a few nights’ use, it softens up considerably. It never becomes buttery smooth, but it does relax into that gently laundered, lived-in texture linen lovers rave about.

The 30% linen content gives it breathability, while the 70% cotton stops it feeling too rigid. It’s airy without being flimsy. Substantial without being heavy. Like most linen bedding, we found this set regulates temperature well. If you’re choosing between this and the Soak & Sleep linen, it will likely come down to which finish and aesthetic you prefer rather than a huge difference in comfort, though the Soak & Sleep set is 100% linen.

Texture is where personal preference really comes in. DH, who sleeps in just boxers even in winter, found it a bit scratchy against bare skin at first. Not unbearably so, but noticeably textured. I sleep in pyjamas and didn’t find it an issue at all. After washing, it softened, but it never becomes silky. If you’re sensitive to texture or prefer that smooth sateen glide, it’s something to factor in.

One small frustration: the duvet did shift inside the cover more than I’d like. We found ourselves giving it a nightly shuffle to pull the corners back into place. Not a dealbreaker, but noticeable, especially in a super king where there’s more fabric to wrangle. The pillowcases, on the other hand, fit perfectly. No sagging extra fabric and no wrestling pillows into submission. They sit neatly and hold their shape well.

If you love the cocooning warmth of brushed cotton in winter, though, this won’t give you that enveloping hug. It’s more about freshness than snuggle.

The button fixtures are practical rather than a luxe design feature

Is the quality worth the premium price?

We’ve been sleeping under the super king duvet cover and using the matching pillowcases during testing. The stitching is neat, the seams are tidy and everything feels well made. It’s made in Portugal and OEKO-TEX certified, which will matter if you pay attention to where and how things are made.

The button fastening sits at the foot of the duvet cover and is secure, though not especially luxurious. Compared with some higher-end finishes, the buttons are fairly simple. They do the job, but they’re not a design feature in themselves.

The stripe is where this set really earns its keep. We usually default to plain white bedding, but the natural ticking stripe adds subtle depth without overwhelming the room. The stripes run vertically down the duvet, which visually elongates the bed and keeps the look clean rather than busy. They’re slim, evenly spaced and understated. More heritage farmhouse than seaside deckchair.

After several weeks of use and multiple washes, it still looks fresh. The colour hasn’t dulled, the stripe hasn’t distorted and there are no loose threads or obvious signs of wear so far.

That said, this is firmly in investment territory. You are paying for the Secret Linen Store brand, finish and aesthetic as much as fabric. It sits in a similar premium bracket to other Portuguese-made linen brands, including Soak & Sleep, so the decision is more about style and detail than dramatic price differences.

Where it feels worth it is in how cohesive and calm the bed looks once it’s made. It has that effortlessly styled quality even if the “styling” in question was done in under two minutes before starting the morning routine.

Despite being made of just 30% linen, the sheets are distinctly crisp

Does the Secret Linen Store French Ticking Stripe bedding wash well?

Secret Linen Store recommends washing at 40°C, avoiding optical brighteners, tumble drying on low and ironing on medium if you want a crisper finish.

In practice, it washes well. It comes out softer each time, and the stripe doesn’t fade or distort. It does crease, but of course it does. Linen is involved.

If you’re someone who irons bedding religiously, you can press it for a cleaner look. If, like me, you’re more of a straight-back-on-the-bed person, the creases look relaxed rather than neglected.

In short: it suits a normal family routine. Wash. Dry. Back on the bed. No drama.

How does it compare to pure linen bedding?

If you’ve tried 100% linen and found it too stiff or too heavy, this blend feels more forgiving. The cotton tempers the crumple and speeds up the softening process. It still feels like linen, just slightly moderated.

Compared with silky 600 thread count cotton, though, it’s far more textured and matte. There’s no sheen here. No hotel gloss. This is about that gently rumpled farmhouse look rather than polished boutique hotel.

When I compare it directly with the Soak & Sleep linen set we tested, the feel is broadly similar once washed and worn in. Beyond the fabric composition, the main difference is aesthetic and finishing detail rather than a dramatic change in comfort.

Up close, the striped design is different to our usual preference but lovely all the same

Is the Secret Linen Store French Ticking Stripe bedding good for hot sleepers?

Yes, in the way most linen-rich bedding is. The natural fibres allow airflow, and the fabric feels breathable rather than dense. I didn’t wake up overheating, and it never felt stuffy under a super king duvet. My hot-sleeping husband also didn’t complain, which is often the real test.

It doesn’t feel cold to the touch. Just fresh. If you run warm at night, this blend sits somewhere in the middle of comfort and ventilation.

Who is the Secret Linen French Ticking Stripe bedding best for?

This will suit you if you like a relaxed, classic stripe and want breathable bedding that still feels substantial. It’s ideal if you want to move away from plain white without diving into bold patterns.

It’s less ideal if you want ultra-smooth sateen, deep winter warmth or the lowest possible price.

For me, it strikes a nice balance. Grown-up but not fussy. Stylish but practical. In a house with children, dogs and an ever-expanding laundry pile, that’s about as good as it gets.

Final verdict: should you choose this bedding?

If you love smooth, hotel-style cotton, this won’t convert you. If you like linen’s texture, don’t mind a few creases and want something that makes the bedroom feel a bit more grown-up, it’s a good choice. Just maybe wait for a sale.
