How we tested

Mumsnet editor Poppy put these pegs to the test in her south-facing coastal garden in Sussex. Combining them with the Minky Retractable Duo Reel Washing Line, she took detailed notes on ease of use, quality and how effectively they secured her laundry in windy conditions.

Our verdict

If traditional wooden pegs or cheaper plastic alternatives aren't cutting it and you want something a bit more long-lasting, these pegs from Minky are a great choice. With their chunky design, non-marking grip pads and myriad weatherproof features, they're fit for outdoor laundry drying in all weathers.

The standard Sure Grip and Jumbo pegs are sold separately, but I'd definitely recommend getting some of both, as they do subtly different jobs. The standard pegs are great for keeping thinner fabrics secure, while the Jumbo ones grip best on thicker items like towels and jeans.

The one big drawback I found while using the pegs in my garden was their size. On the line, they do a great job of keeping your washing in place, but when it's time to collect them up, their chunkiness means you can only hold a maximum of 3 or 4 in your hand at once.

These pegs are built to last, with rust-resistant springs, made from UV stable plastic that won't crumble and with an anti-twist mechanism that stops them from splitting in two. Mumsnetters say the colour may fade over the course of a sunny UK summer, but other than that, they're real winners.

How effective are Minky Sure Grip Pegs?

When set against the wild winds of the south coast, Minky Sure Grip Pegs hold their own. However, you do have to match the right type of peg to the type of fabric - the smaller pegs hold thinner fabrics well, while the Jumbo ones don't grip it so well, and vice-versa.

I was impressed by the lack of marks left on my laundry after a day drying in the sun, so can vouch for the anti-marking pads' performance, even on delicate fabrics like linen and silk.

Even when the wind twisted a king size duvet cover around my retractable washing line, the pegs held firm, keeping my laundry from falling on the ground or blowing into a neighbour's garden.

How reliable are Minky Sure Grip Pegs?

Packed with weatherproof features, these pegs will last years and years. Their bright colours and chunky design might appeal to toddlers, but as long as you can keep them in your peg bag, they'll serve you well for years to come. I've only tested them for the last couple of months, so I'll hand over to Mumsnetters to vouch for their reliability and longevity:

Are Minky Sure Grip Pegs good value for money?

At £10 for a 48-pack of the standard pegs, they work out at 21p per peg. To compare, a pack of highly-rated wooden pegs can be picked up for as little as £4 for 36, which is 11p per peg.

Personally, I wouldn't be without a stash of wooden pegs at home - they're not just useful for hanging washing, I also use them for sealing open food packets, holding paper, I even made a last-minute hedgehog costume for World Book Day out of wooden pegs and an old jumper. I wouldn't use Minky Pegs for any of these jobs, but I'm glad to have them holding up my washing when it's particularly windy.

While 10p per peg isn't a huge difference in price, it makes sense to take into account the years each type of peg will last you. On balance, the Minky pegs will probably last you longer, so we think they're worth shelling out that bit extra for.
