What Mumsnet users say

“We went straight to a two-wheeler at age four. The Micro Sprite. My son took to it quickly. It folds so we can take it with us in the car. He uses it most days now at six.” Brand recommended by Mumsnet user Chimna

“We moved to a two-wheel Micro Scooter at age five. The foldable Sprite. It's got small wheels so best on smooth paths but it's light and easy to carry (we added a carry strap) and will take an adult's weight if you need to scoot it home! A year later she also wanted a stunt scooter for the skate park. But she still uses the Sprite for scooting places. It should last till she's twelve.” Brand recommended by Mumsnetter egonT

Our verdict

This speedy and lightweight scooter is an excellent choice for children aged five to twelve who prefer the freedom of a two-wheeled design. It’s also ideal for kids looking to move on from a three-wheeled scooter.

Available in a choice of colours from subtle black and silver to striking aqua and pink, the durable Micro Sprite has a folding aluminium frame and height adjustable handlebar, with 360-degree steering that responds just like a bike for complete control when navigating around obstacles. A removable carry strap means it is a great choice for any parents tired of lugging a bulky scooter home from the school run every day.

The Micro Sprite glides smoothly along and handles corners with ease and can more than hold its own at the skate park. However, as the wheels are relatively small, it is not so good on bumpy or rough terrain.

How we tested

Mumsnet editor Poppy bought a pre-loved Micro Sprite, and can attest to the scooter’s longevity. The product was tested by her nine-year-old over the course of a year. The scooter was regularly taken on the school run and also to the skate park to learn some tricks and stunts.

What's the Micro Sprite like to assemble?

Poppy bought her Micro Sprite second-hand, so it was already assembled. However, we know from previous tests that Micro Scooters are very easy to assemble, with some models even coming out of the box pre-assembled and ready to ride. The Micro Sprite has an adjustable handlebar, for children from 110 to 152cm tall.

“It was pretty easy to fold and unfold, although it could be fiddly if you have other things to carry or a dog on a lead,” added Poppy.

What's the Micro Sprite like to look at?

As you would expect from Micro Scooters, the Sprite comes in a range of fun and funky colours, including vibrant blues, purples and red, or a stylish silver or black, if you prefer. The Micro Sprite certainly looks a more ‘grown-up’ scooter compared to the likes of the Globber Primo and Trunki Folding Scooter.

Poppy added: “The turquoise colour is nice, and the scooter was good for my then 9-year-old - it doesn’t look at all babyish and he was happy to scoot to and from school on it.”

What's the Micro Sprite Scooter like in day-to-day use?

Poppy says: “It was great for getting to and from school more quickly than if my son had been on foot, and it comes with a strap so you can carry it over your shoulder or it could be hooked on buggy handles.

“We also took it to the skate park a few times - it works for basic tricks and stunts. There’s a kickstand which was a nice extra touch, so it could stand up by itself if need be.”

Poppy was also pleased with how easy the Micro Sprite was to store, adding: “It’s compact but heavy when folded, so it’s easy to store out of the way. We tended to slot it down the side of the shoe rack to avoid folding and unfolding it unnecessarily.”

Is the Micro Sprite easy to clean?

The kickstand means the Micro Sprite is able to stand up on its own, so your child won’t have to leave it propped up against a wall or, even worse, just let it drop to the floor. The long brake also doubles as a mudguard, helping to keep your scooter looking shiny and new for longer.

The manufacturer recommends using a cloth to clean the scooter and making sure it is thoroughly dry before putting away. Putting the Micro Sprite away damp will cause the metal parts to corrode.

Is the Micro Sprite good value for money?

Just like other models from Micro Scooters, the Sprite is made with replaceable parts to last a lifetime of scooting. The manufacturers ensure each scooter is thoroughly tested to withstand the toughest adventures. Its scooter and accessory warranties cover any manufacturing default for two years. Consequently, Micro Scooters can be passed down to siblings and eventually sold on to a amother family for some brand new adventures.

Poppy says: “We got ours secondhand for £30 and it was in good condition. Eventually the mechanism broke after daily use for a year or so.

“I think £115 is OK value as it’s a trusted brand, good quality and appeals to tweens and older kids - plus it can be sold on if you look after it.”
