Parent tester Amber used it with her eight-month-old over the course of three weeks and shared what it’s like to use solo, how comfortable it felt over time, and why the front-based adjustment system really stood out.

Our verdict

The Mamas & Papas Kudo is a well-made baby carrier with a design that’s been properly thought through. Its standout feature is the front-based adjustment system, which parent tester Amber found made it simpler to get a secure fit, especially when she was putting the carrier on and getting her baby in without help.

Once it’s set up, the Kudo is genuinely easy to use day to day. She said the carrier encouraged a more upright posture, while still keeping her baby settled with legs well supported in the ‘M’ position.

The compromise is bulk, particularly for petite wearers. On Amber’s smaller frame, the Kudo felt chunky rather than streamlined due to the thick waistband and substantial, rigid-feeling straps.

Value-wise, however, the Kudo is the sort of carrier that earns its keep if it’s going to be part of your daily routine. Amber felt it was “good quality and robust,” so the price made sense to her, especially because the fastening and adjustment setup felt more practical than her Ergobaby Omni 360. She prefers the Ergobaby for fit on her smaller frame, but the Kudo won points for avoiding the awkward behind-the-back fastening routine.

Who is the Mamas & Papas Kudo Baby Carrier best for?

What’s in the box?

  • Mamas & Papas Kudo Baby Carrier

  • Instruction booklet

How easy is it to set up the Mamas & Papa Kudo Baby Carrier?

Amber found there was a bit of a learning curve when first setting up the Kudo. She says, “I opened the box as soon as it arrived, but I was busy with my two children so had to put it to one side until I could sit and read the instruction manual properly.”

The fiddliest part was understanding the Posture Align Dial. Amber said, “The instruction for the back strap confused me because it wasn’t clear you had to twist and pull the dial up to release the tightness. It made sense after playing around with it, but it took about 20 minutes to get the carrier on and adjusted correctly”.

How does the Mamas & Papa Kudo Baby Carrier look?

“I like the look of the carrier and the fabric is very soft,” Amber says. “My baby was very comfortable in it, however I found it bulky to wear.”

Mamas & Papas says the Kudo is made from 100% recycled, temperature-controlled fabrics. The soft-touch material gives it a more premium feel than some structured carriers, while the lightly padded finish adds to its cushioned design. It’s available in three neutral shades: Cashmere, Black and Sage.

How sturdy and supportive is the Mamas & Papa Kudo Baby Carrier day to day?

In use, Amber said her eight-month-old was “supported well in the ‘M’ position. My daughter felt very secure in the carrier and I was confident moving around."

Part of that comes down to the Kudo’s more structured design. It has an adjustable seat base to help you get the right carrying position as your baby grows, plus a pelvic support panel designed to distribute weight evenly across your hips for a more supportive feel.

It also has a large over-the-head opening, which makes the carrier simpler to get on and off - you can even step out of it while still holding your baby. Amber found this especially practical day to day, describing the carrier as “easy to get on and off.”

Her main niggle was the fit on her petite frame. “I just felt the straps were a bit bulky compared to my size,” she said.

How comfortable is the Mamas & Papa Kudo Baby Carrier?

Despite the bulky fit, Amber described the Kudo as supportive for both herself and her baby. The carrier features integrated back support and a Posture Align Dial that encourages better carrying posture by gently drawing the shoulders back. "It encouraged me to have proper upright posture rather than leaning back to counterbalance my baby's weight. My baby enjoyed being world-facing and happily sat there kicking her legs,” Amber says.

The Kudo Baby Carrier was developed alongside experts from the McTimoney College of Chiropractic, with a focus on keeping both parent and baby well supported. Its structured design is intended to encourage better posture and help distribute weight more evenly, which fits Amber’s experience of feeling more upright while wearing it.

Amber did have one clear caveat though: “It has quite a thick waistband, which made my baby sit quite high on my body at first. My partner also used the carrier and, as he is bigger, he found it more comfortable. I think it works for parents of different sizes - I just wouldn't recommend it for anyone particularly petite.”

There’s also an integrated, pull-out privacy hood that can be used for extra shade and shelter while your baby naps. Mamas & Papas says the hood is particle-filtering and designed to help minimise exposure to sun, dust and fuel emissions.

In terms of breathability, Amber says, “The straps are thick and not particularly breathable. The carrier is also quite padded so wouldn't be the best choice on very hot days.” Mamas & Papas also includes a kangaroo-style front pocket designed as a place to rest your hands, although Amber found it “has no sides on it so isn’t very secure for anything valuable” if you wanted to use it as a storage pouch.

How easy is the Mamas & Papa Kudo Baby Carrier to adjust?

Amber felt “all parts of the carrier are adjustable and it was easy to get my baby in by myself as all the adjustments are at the front.”

That front-first setup is really what the Kudo is built around. It uses ‘pull-forward’ adjustments and a three-step setup process - fit to you, fit to baby, then adjust for comfort - so you can fine-tune the fit without reaching behind your back. The adjustable seat base helps tailor the fit further as your baby grows, while the magnetic clips are designed to make fastening the carrier quicker and less fiddly.

The Kudo offers two carrying positions (inward- and outward-facing), so younger babies can face inwards for closeness and naps, then switch to outward-facing once they’re ready. There’s no back-carry option, though, so if you want the flexibility to carry an older baby or toddler on your back later on, it’s worth keeping this in mind.

Amber adds, “It’s easy to switch between inward- and outward-facing. The carrier also has a built-in newborn insert which you can clip into use or drop down if not required. I like that a separate add-on wasn't required for this.”

One caveat is that the Kudo isn’t immediately intuitive. Amber and her partner were initially confused by the adjustment process using the Posture Align Dial. Once they worked that out, though, Amber found it much easier to get a secure fit quickly, especially when using the carrier solo.

How easy is the Mamas & Papa Kudo Baby Carrier to clean?

Amber says, The carrier can be washed in the washing machine, but the fabric pilled a bit after only one wash, although that could just be from my washing machine! I've been testing the Cashmere-coloured carrier and think a darker colour would be better for hiding stains.”

The Kudo can be machine-washed at 30°C, although Mamas & Papas recommends air drying rather than tumble drying to help preserve the fabric finish.

Is the Mamas & Papa Kudo Baby Carrier good value for money?

With an RRP of £149, the Kudo sits firmly in the mid-range bracket, priced in line with popular Ergobaby carriers and slightly more affordable than the BabyBjörn Baby Carrier Harmony (RRP £209).

Mamas & Papas says the Kudo is suitable from newborn up to 36 months, which helps add some longer-term value if you’re planning to use a carrier regularly through the toddler years. That said, the lack of a back-carry option may limit how practical it feels as your child gets older and heavier.

Amber felt the price was justified because the carrier feels well made and, in her experience, easier to fasten and adjust solo than some rivals.

As she put it: “The carrier is good quality and robust so I think it’s good value for money. I have also used the Ergobaby Omni 360 Baby Carrier, which fits better with my smaller frame. However, you do have to reach behind you to do it up and undo it which isn't always easy, so I prefer the fastenings on the Kudo.”
