Our verdict

Unless you’ve got a rare unicorn child, most parents will know that when it comes to kids’ sleep, no night is like the last. From bad dreams and illness to waking because they need a drink/wee/cuddle or all of the above, getting them to have a good night’s sleep (and getting one yourself) can feel like an impossible task.

But one thing that can certainly help is a good mattress.

Our tester Josephine wanted a mattress for her five-year-old son’s new bedroom that would keep him comfortable and, crucially, in his own bed at night.

After testing the Hypnos Wool Ortho Mattress for three weeks, she found that, more often than not, her son stayed put and actually needed waking up.

“We've had no complaints and have a little boy who regularly needs waking up on a morning rather than waking us up!” she said. “He’s definitely enjoying his sleep. The price is great and the mattress feels very good quality.”

The natural materials of this mattress were something that really impressed Josephine.

“It [was] a pleasant surprise to find out it is made in Britain rather than abroad and imported in,” she said. “The wool being from Britain can be traceable and adds to the sense of being a high quality mattress.”

According to Hypnos: ‘layers of plush wool and innovative eOlus™ fibres create a temperature regulating unit, with wool insulating you in the colder months, and breathable eOlus™ encouraging air circulation for a fresher sleeping environment.’

Although Josephine has yet to test the mattress in colder temperatures, she was impressed with how it fared in warmer weather, especially in her son’s room which gets very warm.

“There is consistent support, [and] he has stayed cool at night which is important in his hot bedroom,” she commented.

How we’ve tested the Hypnos Wool Ortho Mattress

Our tester Josephine’s five-year-old son was ready to upgrade his bed for something bigger, so he was chief tester for this mattress.

The mattress was tested for three weeks from the end of summer to early autumn when the weather was unseasonably warm.

Her son’s room is at the top of the house, so it can get quite hot. This put Hypnos’ claim that the mattress ‘helps regulate temperature’ firmly to the test.

Josephine says her son moves a lot in his sleep, so having a supportive mattress was important:

“There is consistent support. My little boy is a wriggler and looks comfy in whatever place in the bed he’s in,” she says.

During testing, Josephine’s son slept in the bed every night, but it was also used for story time with his older sister, so the mattress’s springs were tested then too.

“It is solid and even with two children who like to run and play on it during story time I’m confident the springs are staying in place and nothing is moving,” she said.

Josephine also got the chance to test the mattress herself when her son snuck into her bed one night and she decided to move into his room for a better night’s sleep.

What’s in the box?

The Hypnos Wool Ortho Mattress is delivered flat and ready to use.

Delivery and set-up

The Hypnos Wool Ortho Mattress was delivered to Josephine’s house flat, rather than in a box or rolled up.

It was ready to use right away and didn’t need to be turned or have any time to settle before use.

“It is reassuring that it was well wrapped for delivery but meant I had a significant amount of packaging to dispose of,” Josephine noted. “Something more environmentally friendly would have been ideal.”

Aside from the packaging, though, the mattress was easy to set up.

“The handles help with moving it into place,” explained Josephine. “It is heavy so needs two people to lift [it].”

How comfortable and supportive is the Hypnos Wool Ortho Mattress?

Having tested the mattress herself (mum life!) as well as her son sleeping on it for three weeks, Josephine confirmed that the Hypnos Wool Ortho Mattress felt both comfortable and supportive, despite being a firm mattress.

“It's really supportive but also comfortable,” she said. “It keeps cool which is great as it’s in a warm bedroom.”

The mattress is firm and contains pocket springs, which Hypnos says ‘work to give you support exactly where you need it’.

Is the Hypnos Wool Ortho Mattress good value for money?

The mattress Josephine’s son tested was the Hypnos Wool Ortho double mattress, with an RRP of £930.

Although not a cheap purchase, Josephine thinks it’s an investment worth making:

“[It’s] great value,” she said. “It’s a mattress from a top brand and is at a great price. In terms of cost per sleep over the years it’s next to nothing. The mattress has supported our little boy with moving to his ‘big boy bed’ with no dramas and he’s having a great sleep. When you have to wake him up for school you know he’s sleeping well.”

Josephine and her husband sleep on a Tempur Cloud 9, while their seven-year-old daughter has a Silentnight mattress. Comparing the Hypnos with those, she told us:

“We have a Tempur cloud 9 which is the ultimate mattress. My daughter has a Silentnight mattress and it’s a lot harder and not as comfortable as this one.”

Final verdict: is the Hypnos Wool Ortho Mattress worth it?

Both Josephine and her son were very impressed with the Hypnos Wool Ortho Mattress, from its construction to the difference it made to his sleep.

“The mattress looks and feels high quality,” Josephine told us. “It is well made and looks clean and well put together. Having the wool makes it feel more special and knowing it contains natural materials is reassuring for me knowing it is my son’s mattress.”

Josephine was also reassured by the mattress’s use of natural materials.

“It's reassuring to know it’s fire retardant due to the natural materials rather than chemicals used,” she told us.

As for whether it’s worth the £930 price tag, Josephine believes it is:

“The cost per sleep over the years is great,” she said. “You can’t put a price on a decent sleep.”
